Really interesting to hear a different perspective on the Mirage 2000, which is so often described as an also ran 4th gen fighter that gets monstered by F16s and the like. Ian Black is a very engaging speaker too! Lucky chap!
Agreed but u have more error probability in mirage especially if u r fighting with f16c or MLUed i guess from the Intrview but both hv pros and cons as it is with most of the ACs in a generation
Mirage 2000C is totally obsolete and has been gone for a while. The F-16 is far, far superior. On the other hand, the Mirage 2000-5 is still OK, but that is a very different aircraft, even if it looks the same from the outside (except for the lack of pitot tube on the radome). There is only one squadron in the French Air Force, though. Even in a dogfight, the F-16 is better. All you have to do is go vertical and the Mirage 2000 is toast. With the JHMCS and AIM-9X (the Mirage has no helmet mounted cueing system), it becomes embarrassing for the Mirage.
@@KRGruner Not sure about the French Air Force, but the Indian Air Force has MICA IR and Topsight 2 which is better than the AIM 9X and whatever is the F 16 helmet is called, and also with MICA IR, you can go BVR and it won't give you a warning
@@raakeshsingh7852 Indeed. These are 2000-5 versions, which as I said are just fine (though lacking an AESA radar, but hey, so does the Eurofighter Typhoon). And yes, India does have the Topsight 2, but the French Air Force does not. In fact, even their Rafales lack such capability.
mr Black is a proper gent, lightning airbrake and fin top in his study!,I worked on lightnings back in the day at Binbrook, love your channel mate, keep em coming!
Really enjoyed that, thanks Ian and Mike ! Also the chance to interview him at the base, with the aircraft sounds brilliant ,look forward to that if it happens, would be great if Ian could do a walk around of the aircraft on the pan......
You know wouldn’t it be nice if the pilots could reunite with the actual planes they flew and did a walk round. I see so many static aircraft bristling with history but soullessly sitting without the pilots who once sat in them
Yes it was shot down by a MANPADS. This actually prompted the French air force to retrofit the Mirage 2000D (the ground attack variant) with an IR missile launch detector.

@11:32 I disagree with Ian, we have a spiritual successor to the Mirage-2000/Vajra, in the Tejas. The Delta is a compound and size is akin to the Russian Lightning, The МиГ-21. Best of several worlds? :D
Thats just a beautiful, beautiful design.... The Phantom is a heavyweight champion boxer, the Mirage is ballet dancer. Holding a shiv in each hand.
Nope, the M2000 is Bruce Lee kind of fighter ;-)
What a fantastic interview! A perfect description of the handling characteristics of the M-2000!
Thanks!

Thanks for the great interviews Ian and Mike. Congratulations on your photography Ian, great that you did take the camera up with you.
This interview deserves 50x views by the aviation enthusiasts community
Thank you, Kostas.
That is wild, I just discovered a and listened to part one and 15 minutes later, part two releases!
Hope you enjoy it Rico :)
The Mirage 2000C phase out is scheduled for next year. It is the perfect time to advertise the 2000 book in France.
Brilliant part 2. The SACT/DACT analogy and description was the best I’ve heard.
Ian Black should try DCS World Mirage 2000C in VR ;-)
Just learning that at the moment 👌🏻😍
I just went through the interview for a second time. What a brilliant aviator… and what a fit description for the M2000
Outstanding as always!
Cheers Arthur
Marvelous stories and fascinating plane.
Thanks for this.

Great interview Mike!

Very interesting interview.
Mirage-2000 and Bosnia. One actually got shot down near Pale, remember watching the news footage. I believe it was hit by a Strela/Igla.

this is awsome, thanks
Thanks!
The 2000 N were retired because the frames were stressed by the low level flights.
A great interview! As a watch enthusiast, I would like to know what you are wearing on a NATO strap please?
I will try and find out for you.
How do you secure a camera in the cockpit when pulling Gs?
