  • In this video I build an upgraded mortar style housing for my Soda Bottle Rocket Launchers! The original project can be seen here: • How To Make Alcohol Ro... Check out my sponsor Audible through the following link to claim a free audio book: www.audible.com/nhil

The design I build in this video was primarily pieced together from spare parts lying around in my garage from past projects. Some PVC from an old potato cannon, a metal strip used to support my aluminum crucible in an earlier video, foam pool noodles from my Nerf style artillery project...A lot of parts were used out of pure convenience. The purpose of this video was less to provide an exact guide for this specific modification of my bottle rocket project, and more to demonstrate how many options for customization such a design can have. The only limit is your imagination.
For those curious, here is a list of all the parts I used:
    3" x 36" PVC Pipe
    3" PVC Couplings (x2)
    1" x 1/8" x 36" Mild Steel Strip
    1 1/2" x 1/4" Bolts (x2)
    1/4" Washers (x6)
    1/4" Locking Washers (x2)
    1/4" Nuts (x2)
3" x 8" Foam Pool Noodle (Foam pipe insulation may be a workable replacement)
    1/2" x 24" PVC Pipe
    Replacement Barbecue Igniter
    Spare Wire
    Paper
    Hot Glue
    Soda Bottles
    Duct Tape
Details from my previous video about how these rockets work and tips for fueling (watch the video to learn the entire fueling process: • How To Make Alcohol Ro...
The rockets are fueled by the combustion of rubbing alcohol, which is ignited by the spark from a barbecue igniter. I used rubbing alcohol with a concentration of about 90% in the video, but any concentration of 70% or greater should work just as well. When fueling the bottles, the most important step as shown in the video is to whip the last drops of liquid alcohol out of the open end. This brings the fuel/air mixture to the proper level for a good combustion, and reduces the liquid alcohol particles expelled from the rocket upon launch that otherwise could melt the plastic blast shield or cause minor burns.
Be sure to wear both eye and ear protection whenever doing experiments involving any sort of rocketry. #NightHawkInLight

I have youtube and friends, but none of my friends are stupid like me to do this lol, so I do it with my older brother and dad, or do it with my brother while dad's at work, and then tell him later, cause half the time when I ask him then he'll say no, so I just do it and tell him later lmao, I used to do Co2 "grenades"
Used Co2 cartridge, drill a hole in the top
Then take sparklers break off the outer powder, put the powder in a blender you'll need probably 30 sparklers per, then poor all into the cartridge, and after that put a 45second fuse in the hole, and then wrap it 6-8 times with electrical tape... put it outside light it and run behind cover and I mean run at least 45 feet away just for safety, we ran about 30 feet away and behind a car, but yeah its very loud so if your in an urban area don't do it, only in a rural environment where neighbors don't mind what sounds like a 12Guage X 3, but with the effect of a firework mortar on the ground, get behind cover cause we recovered shrapnel from the cartridges... if you do this please be safe use a longer fuse if need be, but if you don't have the means of safety it could cost your arm or life

I knew someone who did a similar thing but with steel cans and tennis balls. He cut the tops and bottoms out of four cans and set them on top of each other connected by duct tape. he put a fifth one on the bottom but left the bottom on and cut a quarter-sized hole in the top. He then drilled a tiny hole on the outside bottom of the bottom can. He stuck a tennis ball 3 cans deep from the top and put 3 drops of lighter fluid in the tiny hole, then rotated the whole thing until it evaporated, 20 seconds i guess. Then he set it straight up and put his lighter to the tiny while. UP went that tennis ball around 100 feet or so!

There is an easy way to make the bottles fly straighter and look a lot cooler. You use the cap attached to a cardboard roll. Drill as large of a hole as possible in the cap and hot glue the roll to the outside. Then, make some fins and attach them to the roll. You can make them straight or offset to impart spin. You will have to add a little weight to the nose. A couple of pennies and hot glue works fine. Paint it all OD green and stencil some yellow numbers on the side. They end up looking like real mortar rounds.

I made one styled after the RPG 7. It worked a few times but requires eye protection because gas tends to blast back in your face. Also it was too small and hairspray is not a greatly reliable propellant. The hard part is making it visually pleasing.

thats pretty cool. when I was a kid we would get soda cans (back before cans were aluminium ) take 4 tin soda cans the bottom one leave alone the 3 others cut out top and bottoms tape all together make a small hole in bottom can near the base. lots and lots of tape. electrical tape works well. then put about 3 drops of gas in the top part and 2 drops gas in the bottom hole. Then shake whole thing like he does with the bottle. to vapor the gas. drop a tennis ball in the top and light the bottom hole with a lighter. and boom the tennis ball goes a good 100 yds. For night time we would soak the ball with a little gas and fire ball time.

Back in the day of steel pop cans we would make tennis ball cannons. The bottom can just needed a hole punched into the side near the bottom for the hairspray which was the fuel. The middle can was turned upside down and the bottom cut out inside the steel lip those cans had and the third can just needed the top and bottom cut out the same way.Duct tape the three cans together drop the tennis ball in and it would sit on the bottom of the middle can which is actually the top part of the can with pull tab pulled of corse spray in the hair spray in the hole you cut on the bottom can hit the same hole with a lighter and the tennis ball would blast out of site it was very impressive.

All pool noodles are not the same. In gathering materials for building one of these, I was at the local ACE Hardware, and they had pool noodles in several colors. I measured the diameter of them and found they varied by up to a 1/4" by color. The orange ones were exactly 3" diameter and slid perfectly into the 3" PVC pipe. Your mileage may vary.

I've discovered that with aerosol-fueled potato cannons, you have to fire immediately after loading or you get an underpowered dud, probably because the droplets of fuel start to condense out right away. Does the same thing happen with alcohol, or could you, say, load up this thing, walk around a while, and then expect it to fire reliably?

Idea: push the whole thing down a little deeper add a 1/2" piece of foam (cut a disk out of 1/2" think foam) then insert a water balloon filled with paintball paint mix (you can buy the powder on the web and mix with water). The bottle would more or less be the propelling force to launch the paint balloon at other players that may be hiding out in a fort or such.

So, would you consider 3D printing some more areodynamic rounds now, since 3D printers are around? A heavier object would be blown off course less, and would still hold enough alcohol vapors to fly a good distance.

That wouldn't be a bad excuse to get a 3D printer. I'll have to think about it

You can cut the bottom of the bottle and leave the cap. Put some FOAM on that end and it will have a more stable flight. And if you push it more inside the pressure will be a little stronger. Just an idea dude.

I made a few deters to the 3 inch tub and made it in to a big rocket luncher and mad the bottles look like rockets and the paper added some pounds to the bottles and the when a lot longer distance so try it I was very cool and we could play air soft by filling the head of the rockets with airsoft bullets

You should also figure out a way to simulate the whistling sound heard from actual mortars. More authenticity the better!!

      Slaughter round
the colour is not that important, just think how cool it would be to put some fletching, a longer barrel and first of all some more weight on the bottle: a lot more range. or you can tie explosives to the bottle and weaponize the concept, thhough i'm sure firecrackers would be fine too. by the way, i know that nighthawkinlight is into pyrotecnics, ever considered to use theese things to propell something up in the sky?

I made something like that when I was rather young, though I used solid state rocket fuel rather than alcohol.

Actually you can do that just remove the stand and put some ADS on the front and its a L.A.W launcher how epic is that. And before i miss in our country this thing is called BOGA i dont know why:-)

I know of someone who made a tennis ball launcher out of five steel Gatorade cans( maybe Nutrament shake cans can be used). He cut out the top and bottoms of four of the cans and stacked them with the onset can on the bottom, and duct-taped them together. Then he bored a hole on the side of the bottom can near its bottom. He stuffed a tennis ball three cans deep, then put three drops of lighter fluid in the bored hole. He retired the whole tube so the lighter fluid would vaporize, then he set the can straight up on the ground and light his lighter near the bored hole. I heard a giant THOOM and the tennis ball mustve gone up over 100 feet.

My friends and I used to build
tennis ball cannons out of 5
pork and bean cans and use
Zippo lighter fluid to set it off,
they could launch a tennis ball
so far up you couldn't see it at
    the top of its flight!!!!

When i was a kid a friend made a coke can cannon. Taped up coke cans using lighter fluid to launch a crushed coke can. I like this better.

Is it 1 shot per c02 cartridge cuz by the size of the closing valve it seems like it would release all gas and not conserve any...
