Adam is challenged with building an exploded-view diagram sculpture of the new OnePlus 12 smartphone, but with a twist: can we make the phone still operational after it's been disassembled and encased in a block of clear resin? It's a multiday build filled with despair and triumph; follow along as Adam takes apart the OnePlus 12 and knolls out its components in this adventure in resin casting!

Is it a resin encased phone for everyone? 🙂
Is the air gaps around some pieces due to offgassing? and it looked like the batterey might have swelled a little.
Adam siad "That's Amazing" in regard to the phone functioning with nothing but the battery, display, and processor hooked up. What he should have said is "It's amazing how much effort other companies go through to be sure you CAN"T use your phone if any one thing is not functioning, or isn't a part they get to charge you outragess process fro from first party suppliers." Other products not functioning in such a manner is a CHOICE being made. This is how it SHOULD be if other companies weren't busy trying to be as anti consumer as is legally permissible.
@@LMT069 Adam did say the battery swelled up from the resin process. The heat of the curing process made the battery fail and swell up.

For the future. To set the pieces, use a small bit of UV cured resin for each part to adhere it in place. Then cure it with a UV light to affix it quickly. Then do the rest of the pour.
I was wondering about CA but that is a better suggestion. That would have allowed them to put it in the vacuum chamber too to get bubbles out of the area around the phone (though I'm not sure what the vacuum chamber would do to the battery).
A lot of times the vacuum chamber actually is put under pressure not vacuum. That way the bubbles shrink to (almost) invisible ones.
Still that might be an issue for the battery as well?
Doesn't the CA also Crystalize causing cloudiness?
UV resin often has a different refractory index which means you can see it on or in other resin.
@@sharxbyte Yes, but just barely and if you look for it. While a cloudy area is much more vissible.

20:33. When pouring liquid from a full tin with an offset spout, you'll have better control if you position the spout at the top instead of the bottom as Adam was doing. The air that needs to go in to replace the contents doesn't have to fight its way through to get into the tin and the pour will be smoother.
wow i really like how Adam's workspace has opened up so we can see everything that's happening. much better lighting and video quality too. nice.
31:09 Peter Brown, who made Adam's book into a hammer, replaced the handles on his pressure pot with bolts so he can use his electric drill with a socket to tighten the pot quickly and the same torque by setting the clutch.
Many years ago, a friend left his Nokia on the roof of his car, moments after pulling away he realised his phone was on the roof.
It was too late and the case shattered into fragments… then the phone rang! He painstakingly took it apart and mounted the components on an oak board, soldering extra wire as needed (insulating with clear marine caulking). Thereafter he carried his phone in a laptop case and to the amusement of all would haul out this chunk of wood to make and answer calls…

Watching Adam dive in to his full and total element is very satisfying. Dude was born to do this and happy he was able to find that in his lifetime.
I think Adam is the king of Knolling. When he laid out all those phone parts into that first test layout. Work of art.
One of the best one day builds you've had in a long time and can I just give a big shout out to NORM who has come lightyears in the way of his on camera presence in the last 5 or 6 years. This was a joy to watch. Well done gang.
This looks good from a distance but the front and back case not being level with each other is going to bother a lot of people! Up close there are a ton of bubbles on the components and I'm not sure why they didn't pressure cast it. Cool project though might try it.
I was wondering this but I think part of the issue is keeping the mold level in the vacuum pot while everything cures. If the mold is not level, the parts would have slowly drifted.
@@AxGryndr You can pre-level the pot or level the mold once it's in the pot if necessary. Even if it moves slightly you can sand it level after the fact. I don't think the pieces would move on a small slant.

Anyone else have major anxiety when the polishing was happening? That exposed cable looked so vulnerable!
I thought about it, but realized you don't even need to polish the bottom surface because it'll be tucked away in the base

It's always the worst step in resin work! I felt the anxiety watching this toto!
Everytime you do resin polishing you go like: "oh noooooo did I fuck it up?"
In the 90s I worked at a music store and I setup guitars, fixed amps and had the ought guitar remodel or fix, that my boss (a luthier) would instruct me how to do -- because it wasn't challenging enough for him I guess :D
And respraying the body with polyurathe paint and then a two component resin clear coat. And you saw the little orange peel but it looks nice. And then you come in with your 400grid and you go like... HERE GOES 24 HOURS OF WORK! And then by the time you get to 1200 grid wet sands your nerves settle. And the polish is like ahhhhhh done! But those 3 or 4 times I did that were nerve wrecking. One of the 3 or 4 times was my own guitar, not worried about that. But a client's guitar pffff....
And the first time I didn't realise how thick this car polyurathane paint gets and I got put on the neck and I am like.... Damn, it no longer fits... What do I do send the neck pocket or the neck? My employer said just bring in the neck and the screws will pull it in, gradually go criss cross slowly, that paint and clear coat isn't cured yet rock solid yet, the wood is harder. But next time mask off the neck pock :D

Bruv if anything Collin is the British Adam. Adam is OG status. Did fruze have a show like myth busters? All I'm saying is Adam precedes Collin. I would wager that Collin has a broader ability to create and is likely a better technical engineer. Adam likely has a broader knowledge of science and art. Love them both but let's keep legacy in mind! Adam = big spoon. Collin = little spoon.

I love this build so much. Brings together two of my favorite things, new tech and random builds. Adam always executes some amazing builds with infectious enthusiasm.
I'm watching the part about the richlite and how Adam is describing it as a resin infused paper and I can't help but think about the maker who turned Adam's book into a hammer. 🙂I keep thinking, "That block would also make an excellent hammer."
Adam, if you flip the 1 gallon container of resin 180deg before you pour and have the spout on the top, you won't get the gurgling or air added to the resin. This works for anything, even adding oil to your car.

I’m sure most peoples favorite content on this channel, besides infrastructure, are the builds. So this is great way to get more eyes on the content that other form factors lack.

Norm really contributes a lot in the videos where he helps Adam. it shows he can hold his own with one of the masters of technical builds.
For the placement into the resin, you could take a picture of your test layout and place that under your resin mold. That way when you go to start laying it out, you'd have a nice easy guide.
A little tip for future resin... get a heat gun out and wave it over the surface while the resin is wet to get the bubbles out. It is a common trick in the world of woodworking with resin.
I believe Adam used a small gas torch for that initially on the small piece but good advice for those wanting to try it!!

The new space is working so well! I love the way light comes through the sorter draws as a back drop.
I would have loved to see a top to bottom exploded view with the top being the touch screen that works and all the other components in layers below. Then you could still touch the screen and see the internal bits and bobs
That's exactly what I was expecting, and this isn't an exploded view at all. It's not a matter of semantics. I've never seen what I see here called an 'exploded' view. It's a _disassembled_ view; it's the sort of thing you'd get in the packaging of a product with a page showing a complete inventory of parts.
I love the excitement of every step of the way, As a maker, this the exact excitement I experience every time i build something i have never done before.
This is kind of out of left field, but if someone were to ask me "Who would you say is the happiest, most self-actualized person you know of?" I would answer "Adam Savage," with no hesitation. And it makes me happy knowing someone was able to find his true calling and be very successful at it.
I gotta say it's hard to part ways from the museum setup you had, but seeing the new camera angles and how much room you have to make these amazing creations it was definitely worth it! Awesome build!

@20:34 PRO TIP: If you want to pour liquid from a vessel shaped like this, always let the outlet point upwards. This way you can control the flow MUCH better ;-)

I feel like that puffy battery is a fire waiting to happen. This is still pretty impressive though.
Surprised they didn't use a dummy battery. Hopefully they fully discharged it first.
I dont think there will be any reaction with the battery now due to lack of oxygen. The battery likely swelled from the heat produced from the resin curing.
Came to post this.... Typically these sorts of displays use a dummy battery, for exactly this reason.

That... was... amazing. I was so tense watching and Adam's fist-punching jumping around victory dance at the end was exactly what I was feeling. I think that's a similar sort of energy to when rock stars used to wreck the hotel room after a stadium gig.

Love see people working together having a great time, puts out a good vibe, and with the shop rearranged it just feels like you can breath more easily if that makes sense to you, which also adds to a better work place. Great vid you 2. T.Y.
One suggestion when you do something like this in the future. Your parts sometimes have fine air bubbles around the fronts of them, you can avoid this if you use silicon as if you are making a mold of the parts... pour the silicone down into a tray, then lay the part on top of it so the fronts remain open to the air... let the silicone set, then you build up some sides around you silicone and parts mass, fill it on the front with epoxy and if you need to pull a vacuum on it... after the epoxy sets now remove the silicon from the back of the parts and put epoxy in place of it. So long as you have not waited for any dust to get on the already set epoxy you can usually eliminate any seam line but it allows you to make sure the fronts of parts or whatever you are covering in epoxy will stay free of any bubbles. It can also allow you to more easily adjust the depth of parts in the final casting.
As a dedicated OnePlus user, this video was SUCH a delight. I currently have a 10T that I got recently to replace my 6T, so seeing how the newer phones are changing is so fascinating.

Only advertising copy I heard was them noting that removing the back to replace the battery wasn't a difficult task.
@@robertbackhaus8911 The first 5 minutes or so are the ad read. All the way until they get to building the frame. They even mention the cameras are modular and I believe that was a little beyond 5 minutes. That's part of the ad read. Basically, mentioning anything interesting or positive about the phone is the ad read, then proceeding to the build is the Tested portion.

If you spray isopropyl alcohol on the top, you don’t need the torch to pop the bubbles, just a fun helpful tip that saved me from burning through a lot of molds

Adam likely won't see this, but I'm curious! Have you ever heard about the non-profit volunteer organization "Repair Café"? Basically they're locally hosted events where people can bring their broken stuff and fix it together with the volunteers for free (they just have to bring their own parts if any are needed since we can't stock everything). I think it's a wonderful way to promote maker culture, fixing things instead of throwing them away, all while being a great social concept where anyone can come for a chat. If you're at all interested I would love to get you in contact with the founder of the initiative, I think it could make a very cool video!
This is something that I have been thinking about for years.....as an art project. Mechanical items.........exploded view........in resin. I did on with a knife many years ago and it turned out pretty good.

14:30 hopefully the screen is poured shallow enough you can use the touch screen still on the display... that would be cool.
Things like the base piece are what we call a Fail-Negative task, as opposed to a Pass-Positive one.
Or, as they put it in Futurama, 'if you do your job well enough, nobody will think you've done anything at all'
Its a shame the front camera was disconnected, would've been a great way to display it with that camera on.

One tip I saw once for optically pure and consistent pours. If you mix it in one container, and then pour the container into another container and then mix it again and then do the final pour from that, it removes all inhomogeneities because it deals with the 'sticking to the side' issue.
24:30 usually with exothermic resins, the greater volume will kick faster due to it heating itself up quicker.
Knolling in Resin!
Electrically noncoductive but heat conductive resin. Have the screen exposed from the side so people could touch and use it. Extend the wires so the parts could telescope straight back. Wireless charge and connect.

Really appreciated your treatise on how bases can go wonky and wanted to say you forgot to add, "frames".
At first I pictured them building a form the shape of the test pour but taller and then arranging all the pieces over many many layers so they are all in the correct orientation on the y and z axis and expanded on the x with a light in the base. But even though I was mistaken, I love the final results! Awesome job guys!

That hidden phone board should've been setup beforehand to keep the screen on constantly and disable all security login features so it boots straight to the home screen, or even better boot straight into a demo app that constantly runs.
Pro tip. Adam. You can plug a USB mouse in with an adapter to the USB charge port to get control over it

From what I saw the super clue is good to position stuff. And hot glue... Not always a good idea, your product is going to get hot while polymerisation. And glue can get soften

By the way, when you are pouring the resin (and other liquids too) from new/full containers of that rectangular shape, it usually helps to get a cleaner pour (less spilling/dripping and glug-glug) if you offset the pouring angle so the lid is higher up than the rest of the bottle instead of at the bottom, it'll look/feel like you holding the bottle upside down at first but it really works :)

both... all of the bubbles and artifacts as well. seems like a good first attempt to make changes and make a perfect second go. My guess is the non uniform thermal expansion of the setting epoxy bent the screen enough to do some damage
Ha! Me, too. Along with the alignment being just a bit off. I also thought that the resin would be a lot clearer than what it looks like it turned out to be. Seemed kind of milky and meh.
this gives me an awesome business idea with incorporating a Bluetooth speaker in the base with older devices deconstructed with a working screen then you have an alarm clock/bedside or kitchen music player
Now I want a wall mounted TV that displays it's parts around it's boarder as you watch yah movies, lol
