I see how you can think it might not be fully recorded live but it is. The studio version sounds much cleaner and better and much more noticeable of being studio.
Hard to believe they can be that tight live, but yes this lineup of the band was THAT tight live. The drummer is an absolute beast and I love the bass player's backing vocals. Unfortunately, this lineup dissolved the past few years and only the singer and rhythm guitarist remain with 3 new members. I've seen some live performances with the current lineup and it's not nearly as good as these 5. The biggest gripe is the current bassist's backing vocals. Not saying he's terrible or anything, but definitely not as powerful as the former bassist. You have another one of their live performances in your queue that I requested. It's an older one, from about 15 years ago, and not chopped up and produced like this one so you'll see that they've always been very tight live.
This was the very first song I heard by As I Lay Dying (coincidentally it was apparently the first one released after they reunited after their hiatus) , though I listened to the studio version first (the one used in the official music video). I'm not used to listening to the live version of this song but I could tell it was different from the studio version just by the vocals. Overall it's a good song even if it's not one of my favorites, though admittedly the rhythm of the verses takes some getting used to. Is this my kind of genre? No, as while I don't mind the occasional screaming or grit/growl this ratio of growl to clean is just not for me and like you I prefer it when it's flipped or all clean. Props and more power to people who like this genre though.
They're on tour r right now. That ' Shaped By Fire' album that came out later after this single release, was an awesome album and became one of my faves.
The ending of that kicked ass though especially the drummer. But yes , the flipping of the melodic vocal with the grit vocals I agree with you on that.
