I notice that most of these etiquette rules, not just in dining but in general, actually are practical and not just something to follow to be “proper”. For examples, waving the fork and knife in the air would pose a hazard, putting the utensils back on the mat would be unsanitary, bending down too low can hurt your back (and also would be dangerous if you get too close to the food especially if it’s hot), etc. These are pretty much based on maintaining safety and hygiene.

that's because etiquette was first "invented" so that everyone can feel good when interacting with each other; now people use 'not wanting to seem stuck up' as an excuse to not have proper manners, so they end up being rude and crossing over people's boundaries

Too many restaurants I have been to expect you to keep your dirty cutlery, even when you have not one plate nor extra napkins on the table. I try to always hold onto my bread plate for this reason alone. I feel so comfortable and happy when the restaurant staff remove your plates, silverware on top, and either understand or bring a new set without even asking. A lot of people, staff and diners alike, do not know this; they are simply doing what they think is normal. 🥺🌹🍽 And yes, I am very certain this has only happened in America. I often just ask for new silverware if they try to have my keep it, and sometimes that request is met with hesitation. I think I've always been given a new set, though. 😅🌹🍽

I am not well off or wealthy by any means; I am simply middle class. I never go anywhere fancy to eat because of this but I still use your dining etiquette lessons when I am dining. Things I have noticed is that when I practice dining etiquette, even if the common person or waiter doesn’t understand what I’m doing, I look much more feminine and put together and I’ve noticed that doing these things commands more attention from my date and I get better service from my waiters and waitresses. Home training and soft skills truly benefit any woman in any situation

Jamila, I would like to know how to gracefully deal with little accidents that happen while dining. For example, when you drop a piece of food, if you drop your napkin or cutlery by accident, if you rip a stocking or whatever clumsy mistakes that could happen. It would be fun to watch and very educational 🤣.

In France, the etiquette says that fork and knife position in the plate also has a meaning.
Crossing them like you did in the video means you have finished and... didn't enjoy your food 😛. Putting them in parallel means you liked it, and putting them perpendicularly means you would like to have the next dish.
Making an A, means you are having a pause

For the people around us, it is fancy. My kids complain about having to learn to be fancy when no one else does it. My husband learned! He recently went to a business celebratory lunch and his friend/boss leaned in and asked my husband what fork he should start with :)
My mom is Mexican but taught me the basic use of fork and knife as a kid (siblings and dad need etiquette classes!) I later learned the rest on my own. When we were dating, my husband’s family gave me the nickname “la duquesa” the duchess because I use a fork and knife lol.

Agree, I think, She has already a vedio her dining etiquette and people can watch and learn. It is not neccessary to judge people like Zendaya and Haileys how they eat and embrasing in her vedios. Like You said, they don’t a need to follow rules, it is thier coluture and they eat like a normal person. Not a a big deal.
Don’t be a judge,or You Will be judged.

@@senaitmessele8641 she wasn’t even being judgy or mocking them, though. it was just a reaction and showing + talking about what was done wrong and right. she was very polite throughout the whole video, so i’m not sure what the problem is here, quite frankly. she wasn’t mocking or saying anything was embarrassing, and even mentioned similar disclaimers in the beginning.
there are a lot of things that are messed up in this world, a lot of people with malicious intentions, but it’s very clear that jamila is not one of those people.

I personally find it more practical to eat the soup with bending my upper body down alittle bit towards so that any drop of soup that may be drop down to the bowl wouldnt dirt my shirt. Thats only my personal opinion, if thats what she said is the good etiquette for eating soup, then let it be;)

I noticed that the way Hailey eats it’s just more American, whereas the etiquette rules are more how Europeans or British or the French eat. For example, in Europe, you’ll always have the fork on your left side with the tongs facing down and your knife on your right side because a lot of the food that you’re eating there are using both utensils And it makes it easier for cutting each bite instead of switching the utensils over to the other hand like you do in America because typically with American foods, you can eat a lot of stuff with just a fork by itself so it would make sense just to have the fork on your dominant hand.

I love your videos so much, Jamila! I was wondering if you might consider doing an etiquette video on weddings, particularly gift giving, and funerals, especially how to offer condolences. I know that customs can differ from culture to culture, but I find myself uncertain about what to do when I may not know the people getting married or the person whose loved one passed away very well--we're still connected in some way, however, so I would like to know what to do in such situations. Thank you so much for all of the work and love you put into your channel!

The real criticisms are actually simply pointing out the differences between European style and American style cutlery usage. American's do not use cutlery with the fork tines down. It is not taught to us in Etiquette Classes. The proper way is considered to be tines up straight into the mouth. It wasn't until I started to travel in Europe that I saw the European style and began to adopt it. Eating tines down still gets odd looks. Also, eating with waiving your cutlery is a no-no, as is putting your used silverware back on the table, and talking with your mouth full- so I agree with you on those points. The use of the desert spoon alongside the fork is also not taught. Generally, the spoon or fork ONLY are presented and used at dessert time. I know this sounds odd, but unless cutting meat, Americans generally only use one piece of cutlery at a time. So you would cut your steak, put your knife down, switch your fork to your dominant hand and continue eating. Again, it would be tines up, and directly into your mouth. It sounds nitpicky, but really, the American style is so different to a more "European" style. It has a lot to do with not looking "fussy", but there are still rules.

I agree with this comment, even though Jamila looks absolutely sophisticated and beautiful eating in this way. In my part of the US, a very small number of people eat using the European style. I have attempted to use the European style on occasion but feel as though it appears I'm using bad manners by putting food in my mouth with the tines down because no one eats that way here. Love the video!

    • @binaboop1
      @binaboop1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@cat_pb It is. If you wish, try searching for the “difference in American and European dining”. Specifically, the difference is in how the cutlery is held. I also took Cotillion and etiquette courses in the US and I was taught table manners in several places. I was never taught European two-handled cutlery holding as it was thought to “look pretentious” and was “easier to spill”. I assume it’s some sort of held over prejudice due to our history. However, I did adopt the two handed method and found it to be neater and quieter as you don’t change hands.
