    LYRICS:
I'm going to rent myself a house
In the shade of the freeway
I’m going to pack my lunch in the morning
And go to work each day
And when the evening rolls around
I'll go on home and lay my body down
And when the morning light comes streaming in
I'll get up and do it again
    Amen
I want to know what became of the changes
We waited for love to bring
Were they only the fitful dreams
    Of some greater awakening
I've been aware of the time going by
They say, in the end it's the wink of an eye
And when the morning light comes streaming in
You'll get up and do it again
    Amen
Caught between the longing for love
And the struggle for the legal tender
Where the sirens sing and the church bells ring
And the junkman pounds his fender
Where the veterans dream of the fight
Fast asleep at the traffic light
And the children solemnly wait for the ice cream vendor
Out into the cool of the evening strolls the Pretender
He knows that all his hopes and dreams
    Begin and end there
Ah the laughter of the lovers as they run through the night
Leaving nothing for the others but to choose off and fight
And tear at the world with all their might
While the ships bearing their dreams sail out of sight
I'm going find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint by number dreams
And then we'll put our dark glasses on
And we'll make love until our strength is gone
And when the morning light comes streaming in
We'll get up and do it again
    Get it up again
I'm going to be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender
Where the ads take aim and lay their claim
To the heart and the soul of the spender
And believe in whatever may lie
In those things that money can buy
Though true love could have been a contender
    Are you there?
Say a prayer for the Pretender
Who started out so young and strong
    Only to surrender

I was 15, just retired this year, seems like yesterday.....I wish we listened to the 'old fogies' back then that told us time flies. We thought we'd be young forever, bullet proof, no fear. Now, we're the 'old fogies' and I tell the young kids to live life, squeeze the juice out of it, because it really is gone in the blink of an eye. We get busy living life and forget to live life. Thanks JB.

I also started listening to this song in the '70s. I still have the album. I have always very much liked the song but always found the lyrics chilling because of "They say, in the end it's the wink of an eye" and "I'm going to be a happy idiot
And struggle for the legal tender". I have frequently offered the same sentiment to my senior prom date (now wife), then today I see my name (minus 1 letter) speak of the same realization ( I also just retired). Thank you for posting John Eas_on

I’m… speechless, with the salty taste of my own tears. I’m 55 now, and was so young when I first heard this song; completely unaware of how much depth and complex meaning is within those lyrics. But today, it hit smack in the middle of my soul. Timeless, and even more beautiful today than it ever was. Thank you Jackson, for your incredible talent and musical gifts that you have shared with us all. 🙏 Much love and gratitude to you from me. ❤️

Jackson is a poet extraordinaire with a vulnerability and honesty that our world will ALWAYS need. I was 25 when this song was released in 1976 and it struck me deeply, bringing to my awareness the many ways in which I had already compromised my goals and self-respect. I'm 72 now and writing poetry that reflects the incredible journeys our 'Baby-Boomer' generation . Jackson remains a powerful muse for me and a 'silent comrade' in the middle of the night when I am writing, crying and seeking comfort from the chaos and darkness of our world today. Thank you, Brother....you are deeply loved and cherished.

I was such a young man, when this amazing song came out. Now, I'm 65, and I look back at a life, wherein I did struggle for the legal tender. This song is like the anthem to my life. When I listen to it now, I do get teary eyed and somewhat emotional. Tears of happiness and a lifetime as a pretender. Thank you so much Jackson Browne for everything that you've done for music and all of your loyal fans. We are blessed to have you in our lives.

"Caught between the longing for love and the struggle for the legal tender". This song registered mightily when I was a 21 year old out on my own. All I can say is that it is not life that is short. Life is long. It is youth that is short, much much too short. Maybe they have trouble compartmentalizing the difference between the talented singer-songwriter and the man who used to beat up his girlfriend for fun.

I wonder why the people who dislike some kinds of music, never say why they dislike it? Are they afraid of their own opinions?

Since was I 13 years old, in 1986, Running on Empty has been the soundtrack of my life. All of your other songs have been peppered in-between throught the years. Thank you Mr. Bowne. You have made my life much better than it would have been without you.
