In my opinion, the greatest composer in the history of film. No disrespect to Zimmer or Bernard Herrmann. James captured the emotion of what was on-screen better than anyone.
@@jslasher1 I didn't mean it like that I'm curious what makes you think Hermann is so much better than Zimmer..I'm curious about people's taste in music
@@leif1075 If you take the time to listen to the music composer by each individual I believe you will note Herrmann's superior techniques. After all, he was a conservatory trained composer, whereas Zimmer, for example, can't even read notated music.
A Musical Genius he was, Truly. He took all these great movies he scored, to a whole new level with his music... RIP James Horner. You will live on through your enchanting music
“Hauntingly melancholy” is how I would describe the score to Field of Dreams. It stays with you long after the credits have rolled. In not having an overproduced, complicated soundtrack, James allowed to space/“breathing room” to allow you to interpret and free-associate your own emotions onto each scene.
I think James Horner is the best film composer of all time. His feeling and understanding of the film makes them come alive. Turning the sound down during the movie puts his great work in perspective..
The brilliant soundtrack to this memorable movie, is surely one of the most hauntingly beautiful and emotionally moving pieces of music, ever written and recorded in cinematic history. I believe this is James Horner's masterpiece.
Bill Goeren many people may disagree with you, but it is one of my favorites. Having grown up with Star Wars and other big scores, Field of Dreams was one of the first I heard that brought subtlety and grace. I love this soundtrack!
@jslasher1 ALL composers are inspired and borrow ideas and elements from other works. Some would call it paying a "homage". Many classical pieces James referenced in his scores led me to grow to appreciate and admire the composers and their works even more. Every composer has an inspiration for their work, and many are also inspired by their own. The world lost a beautifully creative and wonderful soul the day James Horner died.
Wow! At 3:38 I get chills and goosebumps listening to the "Irish theme" that James Horner composed for Ray Kinsella and the theme of Ray and Terrance Mann en route to Iowa. It's so emotional that I get emotional. And, yet, I love how Phil Alden Robinson summed up the second theme, that it's not any one emotion, but it's whatever you read into it at that moment. It doesn't tell the audience what to think, but it allows them to bring their own emotion into it. That's the power of GREAT music!
10:03 "it would have been a disaster if something had happened to me." :( god, i can't believe he's gone...and under such tragic circumstances. truly a one-of-a-kind composer. RIP James.
handsomerube Same....it must mean something when you miss a person you never actualy met in real life...My very first soundtrack I bought was Braveheart..
I never had the pleasure of meeting James in person but with the way his music touched my life and my heart, I feel like I knew him as a dear friend. I'LL LOVE JAMES' MUSIC FOREVER!
I was an aspiring filmmaker and one of the movie ideas I had, I wanted James Horner to do the score. I never had the chance to meet him, but his music is what got me into listening film music. The very first soundtrack album I bought from iTunes was The Perfect Storm by James Horner. Not soon after I bought the album and started listening to it in my head, I started to visualize a story. Rest in Peace, James Horner. You were my inspiration to pursue filmmaking.
I hear the Legends of the Fall theme which James would compose 6 yeras later. He must have been similarly moved emotionally. What a musical gift he had. Tragic that he left this world so soon.
I could've listened to them speak about this for hours and hours. Thank you for posting! What an incredibly beautiful score, and to hear how it all came about makes it that much more special.
Another music legend who died, well before his time, because of a plane crash. If I had my way, they’d never leave the ground and live to be 100. But at least he knew that he was loved & left us with hundreds of incredible compositions. And those great works will live on forever.
I can only say that magic is magic whether it wins an award or not. This movie is a mystical journey, beginning to end. James Horner gets it just right......perfection!
What a humble guy Horner was....and probably my favorite movie composer of all time (Zimmer, Goldsmith and Conti are all close seconds). But no one could capture emotion of a scene like Horner! He was the GOAT in my opinion.
@jslasher1- Horner is American! He was born in L.A. and went to school in Britain for most of his childhood, hence his sort of mixed American/British-accent.
I love La La Land records and Intrada. Home of the premiere, limited, and expanded soundtracks. I love hearing previously unreleased cues, alternates, and extras. Yes, I actually do have Field of Dreams under that edition.
I've always felt the story of this movie is a bit far fetched but the music sells it. And as great as the cast and movie is, this soundtrack carries this movie on its back. It may be the most remarkable and legendary soundtrack in all of cinema imo.
There is truly no God when this man can be taken from us so early in his life and career. I don't know how composers do it, how they find such beauty and genius from inside themselves.
Alas, the major league baseball Field of Dreams game in Iowa (August 2021) was an over-the-top success that included many snippets of the James Horner movie score -- that were uncredited or acknowledged by any of the talking heads even though Horner's ethereal music was a major part of the film's success. This 12-minute interview of Horner explains his critical choices of scoring and instrumentation, and emphasizes the tragedy of his death in 2015 at the age of 61 (when a private plane he was flying crashed). His music, particularly in Field of Dreams, was star-dust.

That last scene without Horner score would never be as memorable or emotional. Should've won an oscar

I'm not a sports fan at all, and I still laughed at Horner's "50-yard line" remark.
Some one else will say hit a grand slam home run in golf.
At the Oakland Coliseum, the 50 yard line was right where the pitcher's mound is located so James Horner is onto something there
