One of my favorite sunscreens for my acne-prone skin is littlllextra rice berry SPF 50+ sunscreen. The major issues I face with a lot of sunscreens are that either they cause breakouts or they leave my skin dry and irritated. But this sunscreen doesn’t do this and it wears great under makeup which is essential for me since I wear makeup daily as someone with acne-prone skin.

I tried the lotus initially, and it was just okay, but then, I used riceberry, and I can tell it performs much better.

Two best sunscreens I’ve found for acne-prone skin are Korean brands: Round Lab birch juice spf 50 and Missha all around safe block essence milk spf 50. Round Lab is slightly more moisturizing, but both amazing for combination skin and especially acne prone.

I've struggled with acne since my early tween years, and since I've started using a tretinoin perscription my skin is very sensitive, EXTREMELY dry, and still very prone to breakouts and flare ups. I HIGHLY recommend the Beauty of Joseon sunscreen if you have dry/sensitive skin and struggle with acne. I usually layer it over a moisterizer just because tretinoin has made my skin SO dry, but it feels AMAZING!! It's so moisterizing and makes my skin feel so plump, does not sting my eyes or the rest of my face whatsoever, and from what I can tell the sunscreen itself has not contributed to my breakouts. It also gives such a beautiful glow from within, which makes me feel a little bit better about my skin despite my pretty severe acne :). Highly recommend this sunscreen! There is light at the end of the tunnel my fellow acne-struggling friends!

I have oily, sensitive, acne prone skin. My favorite sunscreen under makeup is the Paulas Choice Youth Extending fluid spf 50. I usually do a second layer of sunscreen on the tzone [right on top], with a matte mineral sunscreen for oil control (I use the Elta MD UV Elements tinted). Makeup wears great with this combination. For no makeup days the Elta Md UV clear tinted is great. Its actually quite brightening over time, idk whats in there but I certainly like that. For matte spf, I like Elf Invisible spf 35. Works with makeup if you use a sponge to apply, and looks great bare faced on my light-medium tan skintone.
If i could only buy one id buy the Paulas Choice one. If I didnt wear makeup id just buy Elta Md UV clear.

Hi Sam 💖 new subbie here 🥰. I have oily acne prone skin and I’ve been using a range of neutrogena “non comedogenic” sunscreens (they’re absolutely accessible to purchase as an inexpensive drugstore brand) and I haven’t noticed any worsening of my acne. My favourite I would say is the Ultra Sheer Face with spf 50 uva and uvb lightweight lotion. It does not have any strong fragrances, feels lightweight upon application and does not make my skin produce excess sebum throughout the day. Hope this contributes well! I love your content 😍

I am combo-oily (my t-zone QUITE oily, my cheeks less so) and acne prone. I can easily get away with just wearing sunscreen as my moisturizer and still end up oily half way through the day. I have a good selection of sunscreens that work for me and don't break me out.
ETUDE HOUSE Sunprise Mild Airy Finish Sun Milk (mattifying)
    Hero ForceShield (mattifying)
Paula's Choice (whatever the tinted one is) (mattifying... at first)
    Paula's Choice Hydralight (somewhat mattifying)
Elta MD UV Clear (not exactly mattifying but does seem to control oil a bit)
Elta MD UV Elements tinted (Similar to the UV Clear for me, but the tint is a bit too orangey for a pretty pale person like me)
Beauty of Joseon (not mattifying but doesn't make me more oily)
Tula Mineral Magic (mattifying, at least for the first couple of hours)
Colorescience Sunforgettable Flex (I use the lightest but it's just a touch too light/ashy for me so I do warm it up a little. Not mattifying at all)
Thrive Causemetics Sunproof (very dimethicone-y if that's your jam and touts itself as a primer as well)
I feel like I'm missing some, but I have had great luck with all of the above.

Another great video, Dr. Sam! At 69 with VERY sensitive and dry skin I use two mineral sunscreens that make moisturizer and foundation totally unnecessary. I first apply ColorScience Face Shield classic SPF 50 (very moisturizing) then apply MyChelle Dermaceuticals Sun Shield Liquid SPF 30 (which can be a bit drying). Between the two of them they leave my skin looking great with no negative reaction. Hope this is helpful

Pre accutane, I had SUCH oily skin with tooons of acne and scarring. I WISH i had worn daily spf before age 17, but when I was on accutane and having breakouts, lightweight korean suncreens were THE BEST. I hated (and used to be scared of) sunscreen on my acne prone skin, but k-beauty spfs almost soothe, treat, AND protect. The missha sun essence, biore aqua rich, round labs birch juice spf, and beauty of joseon were all great for me. The ISA KNOX uv sun pro is SO SO good. It is not too expensive and comes in a big bottle which is good bc psychologically you will use less sunscreen when it comes in a small, expensive tube. Which is not good, you want to put on a lot of sunscreen.

I also have horrible eczema around my eyes and in my hairline, so a lot of sunscreens do not get along with my skin. I hate that I can only use mineral sunscreens because I’m extremely pale and find a lot of them make me look grey and sick. I wish trying new sunscreens also wasn’t a roll of the dice whether my eye lids will swell up. My derm says to stick to what I know but supergoop is super expensive for everyday use.

I have perioral dermatitis, rosacea and seb derm and right now I'm using and loving the Cetaphil liposomal lotion spf 50+, I was using Eltamd uv clear but two months ago I introduced as per recommended by my derm Aklief, and I found it was then stinging my sensitized skin, I thought of giving this Cetaphil a shot and it has been amazing. My skin is on the "oiler side" and I live in a hot humid place, while I'm on retinoids (I'm also on low dose accutane and spironolactone) my skin is less oily than in its natural state but still it reacts badly to heavier products and this hasn't been the case for this. And it comes in a 100ml bottle. You might be able to get it in the US if you get import it from Mexico, or if you get it as Daylong protect and care lotion spf 50+, which is the same exact formulation as they are both owned by Galderma. The cetaphil vs Elta md seems to give me more protection IMO because even tho I used to wear each daily, I was getting a tan with the elta just through my daily commute to work.

It has a slight green tint that takes down almost all of my redness which is amazing, and it's great at keeping oil at bay throughout the day. It does go on VERY dewy at first, but it dries down pretty quickly. I'll wear this one on days I'm not wearing makeup/don't want any sort of tint or coverage, so I can't attest to what it's like under makeup. But, I love the Saint Jane Sun Luxury sunscreen as a makeup primer, and I'll wear that one when I'm doing full makeup. The kose suncut one is amazing for athletes as it is waterproof, breathable and no cast. Most teens hates wearing sunscreen but if they do ooutdoor sports, it's a must. Once they try this one, it will change their minds. I personally wear the colorscience flex. It's the only sunscreen that has enough coverage that I feel I can skip foundation, but it doesn't do well around hairline or dry spots so I am still on the lookout for something that is better. Most tinted sunscreen just doesn't have enough coverage that can replace foundation.

I have acne prone skin. My skin type changes with the seasons, oily to combination in the spring , summer and fall and normal in the winter. Elta MD Clear was my go until I started using Beauty of Joseon. Maybe it’s the probiotic (or is it prebiotic?) in this formula but it has never caused acne and it’s so affordable. In all seasons, it suffices as a daily moisturizer. In warmer months it is a bit glowy on me but a little powder works to minimize the shine.

Question re: body skincare: On a day when you don't shower or bathe, would you still recommend putting a moisturizer on the body?

    • @DrSamEllis
      @DrSamEllis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Really just depends how dry your skin is! For people with eczema I would recommend applying moisturizer every day but not everyone needs that frequency.

    • @pmlf822
      @pmlf822 ปีที่แล้ว

@@DrSamEllis Thanks. I don't have any skin ailments but I am very dry - naturally, but also, Canadian winters and indoor heat don't help. I think I'll increase frequency of application and see how it works out.

I have adult acne-prone skin. After trying what felt like most of the US market and consistently getting cysts every time I applied spf to my face (and also trying tons of mineral options that just dried me out to the point of severe discomfort), I finally thought to look outside the US.
Turns out that one or more of the US filters triggers cystic acne on my skin. As long as I avoid the US filters, my skin does fine with SPF.
My current favorite is UltraSun Family SPF30.

DRMTLGY universal tinted is great for my older oily skin. It’s the first one I ever tried and immediately fell in love. Once it dries down and I powder it (I don’t use foundation) it’s lovely. It actually holds back the oil. My lunchtime powdering because of shiny oily skin is no longer needed as it keeps the oil in check. It does burn when it gets in my eyes like when I’m sweating cutting grass. But other than that I love it. I still have one and a half bottles of it so after that I might try something new but I love it so much I’m not sure I need to waste money.

I’m super confused about the Elta MD physical. Dr. Ellis, you mentioned that the physical is better for oily skin, but the description states that the clear is for oily skin and the physical is for dry skin (??)

i have oily, acne/pimple/clogged pore-prone and somewhat sensitive skin and i LOVE the innisfree daily uv defense spf 36. $16 for 1.7 oz, available at sephora, i just wish that it was a higher spf!!! super thin, rubs in beautifully, i myself have super fair skin but i've even people with deep/dark skin tones who also love this sunscreen :)

SKIN1004 - Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++ is also good for combination/oily skin. it is slightly moisturising, not heavy, leaves satin, very natural finish, does not sting the eyes. it is much lighter compared to Beauty of Joseon one (that leaves my skin quite greasy)

Hi Sam, thank you for the recommendations!
I'd love to know your thoughts on the new All Physical Ultimate Denfense Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF 50 from Dr. Dennis Gross too.😁
I'm someone with very dry skin and just recently tried out the Naked Sundays 100% Mineral Collagen Glow Perfecting Priming Lotion SPF 50+.
It's absolutely amazing, new holy grail mineral sunscreen! The product was thick coming out, but then great once blended into the skin. Fragrance free, water resistant, and no white cast on me with the tint. Thankfully no pilling either.
I only wish it came in a bigger bottle because $34 is expensive for only 1.7 ounces!

If you're really oily but don't wear makeup then it's easier to find a sunscreen. But if you're oily AND wear makeup, let me tell you that most sunscreens won't work well with your foundation. I wear full cover long lasting matte foundations and have tried all the Japanese and Korean sunscreens that most people love for oily skin, but they just make my usual long lasting transfer proof foundations rub off easily and look strange. The ONLY sunscreen that has worked well with MY makeup is Supergoop Matte screen. Unfortunately because of the texture you can't wear the recommended amount of sunscreen. But I guess it's better than nothing.

Does anyone know of any non-mattifying sunscreens for oily skin? My issue is I lean slightly towards oily skin and I break out super easily. So whenever I look up recommendations, I’m always hearing about mattifying sunscreens. But I really love the dewy/glass skin look so I can’t stand the way the sunscreens look on me!

I recently purchased both the Elta MD physical and clear tinted versions. Both of them cause horrible pilling immediately upon rubbing them in. They just ball up and don’t soak into my skin at all. My skin is oily and I hear so many good things about them that thinking maybe I just got a bad batch or something. Anyone else have trouble with that.
