  • Lance has been dreaming of this since he was a child in the 1970’s. Today we put a smile on his face as he got to drive the 1971 International cabover semi 4070a model. Detroit diesel 671.
    The sounds are awesome (except for the gear grinding) Be nice to him about it!
    Next time we need to let his teenage son drive it.

    Scott, as a past driver of cabovers, the windshields get cracked all the time from items left in the sleeper berth. When you jack the cab up you will have an "idio-second", that's the second you hear the crash against the windshield and remembered your suitcase in the sleeper.

      Ah, you remember Dennis Miller's "sniglettes" from the days when Saturday Night Live was funny (mostly). IIRC the exact term was "igno-second" - the interval of time between letting go of the car door and realizing you're locking the keys inside. The emotion that results was called "doomnesty."

    My truck driver father: ‘“down the hill in the same gear as you drove up.” He drove a 1963 International gas with the same transmission and two-speed rear axle. Rear axle shifted with the clutch or accelerator. He worked for my maternal grandfather. He had to have driven close to 2,000,000 miles with only one accident. Black ice coming down Beaver Summit in Utah. It was a multi-vehicle accident ahead of him. The highway patrol officer on the scene had his patrol car rear-ended an totaled. My grandfather eventually purchased a set of diesel trucks. My dad, as the senior driver, and longest routes, drove one of them.

    I'm 66 years old & have been driving trucks much of my adult life. Only ever drove one with a 2 stroke. It was an early 70's GMC conventional cab with a single drive axle. I think it was an 8v71. Had a 5 speed transmission with a 2 speed electricly shifted drive axle. I was a relief driver & thet truck's regular driver rarely took a day off. So I didn't get to drive it often. Only diesel in the fleet of 5. I miss that truck.

    any of us that were preteens in the CB era were in love with it. even at five, I had a handle! didn't get a genuine ride along till my 20's, though. my stepfather inevitably had a coal delivery on Christmas Day, and that was my Christmas treat; sitting in the jumpseat of one of the last of the Mack R's and sipping on a free coffee. still have a couple Trucker albums in my collection; the infamous "Six Days on the Road" collection, and a cash in album from Realistic that's probably rare as hen's teeth by now. I'm hoping I can get something out to the younger truckers so they can experience these classics.

    Get you a king pin and a piece of flat steal and fabricate something to add weight to the fifth wheel build a cage and put something like a concrete barrier from your local concrete plant. Back in the day you could get air assist for the steering, it was easy to install and if makes a big difference turning the steering wheel. That cab is in excellent shape for the age.

  • @markdauncey927
    @markdauncey927 22 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    I guess that with no weight on the rear axle tyre pressures could be really low and that might improve traction (and braking on loose?)
    But I don't suppose the ride would improve that much, but tou never know.
    I'd be putting a ball on the steering wheel to help with tight turning on the move.
    Anyway a great little play truck that's worth keeping running.

    You guys are trying to shift that like a 4 speed bus. With the 10 speed, there's only about 300 rpm between gears so you need to shift a lot faster. Doesn't help that you can't use the two gears on the far right. Lotsa fun nonetheless.
