- This is the rescue story of Faraja, a young 7month old partially albino elephant calf who is now being rehabilitated at the DSWT's Nairobi Nursery.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

I love how quickly the orphan herd welcomes the new ones! They said hey i lost my mommy too, but were all family now!

It's amazing and weird how elephants just seem to be friendly and loving to each-other. They really calm eachother down, support eachother etc.
i love how elephant are so affectionate and unprejudiced about whom they show their love to. that baby will be loved and care for by all the females in the nursery.

Massai should NOT be allowed to kill elephants. They can contact the rescue people if they have problems!
ferrygirl100 Its not easy.... Can you just leave your crops being destroyed so you can call kenya wildlife service which sometimes are far away.. These guys are not always bad but something need to be done
ferrygirl100 Unlike the Samburus, the Massais are by nature warfreaks - they wage wars with other tribes, including with wildlife and nature. Hence, the Massais are known for their warriors. However, they need to be educated to change their primitive belief that spearing an elephant is part of a warrior's initiation, to prive hunting prowess.

OMG so beautiful! My 1st encounter with this. Such good hearted folks here. Ever since I was young I have always believed elephants are so much like humans. Probably because of how I was raised. My mom was cruel, the daily put downs "You'll never be, do or have" etc. Reminds me of how when an elephant is a baby here in the US they stake them to the ground with a rope. Growing up like that never realizing they can free themselves, if only they try. The same with people. Conditioning......Peace

He must have been terrified and confused with being captured and taken to a place where he was not familiar with after a horrific human incident which took his mom's life. I'm glad he now knows that there are wonderful humans like your team in this world, who are only there to help, care, and love so that he can return to his wildlife home.

The keepers treat the orphans with respect and give them love which helps them with.there trama. I enjoyed.chapter 1 when.they played.the ball. You can tell the orphans enjoyed it.to. the head keepers understand them and they.feel it. If I were younger. I would get on a plane and go to your reserve to help you in any way I could. Thank you for what you do and give the orphans what.they need. Thank you.

So in a country that had the highest infsnt mortality rate not to mention all the children without parents due to HiV , and extreme poverty. This organization has rhe resources to pick these animals up via orivate plane, and rush then to a vast amount of resources while all these children are dying around them.. Sounds pretty disgusting. Just keeo in mind especially my fellow Americans, you are heavly targets for fundraising. These litttle bsbies grow up to adults that require an enormous amouht of resources to live. They are alreadty startung yo violently invade villages and destroy crops and livestock. Please think hard before mailing that check. How many sick dyjng children would love the chance to ride on an airplane to get medical help and food? I nstead thst treatment is reserved for beasts of the field? Cmon we can do better people!! SMH

Somebody needs to get Tano his very own long green jacket! He was just like a keeper lol. It shows how great of a job you guys do when older orphans are eager to welcome younger ones. I’m sure Tano was once a traumatized baby too but look at him now 🥰

Faraja's mother Fanella is suspected to have been speared by Massai herdsman. Some young females were taking care of Faraja as best they could, but they could not give him the milk he needed to survive and so it was decided that he should be raised by the wonderful people at the DSWT.

It is sad the baby has to be taken from his herd to survive. The herd is his family. It may be partly why he was aggressive at first, upset he was taken away. I didn’t know the elephants responded to their names.

I love this 1. He's such a little trooper. And the other orphans welcoming him. I was going to look up why they put blankets over them. Is it a calming thing like their mother's trunk resting on their back?
thier skins are very delicate at that age and can get sun burn easily .. also it gives them the impression of their mothers underbelly where they go for protection...there is a clip here where the keepers hang out the blankets at night...some of the babies instinctively go to the blankets and under them for reassurance. poor babies

Mud is used to protect from the sun. Blankets are used to protect from the cold. One of their videos said that baby elephants can develop pneumonia in cold temperatures.
@@cacatr4495 also a comforter. when theyre young lke that they take refuge undert their mothers belly when theyre afraid or need protection or reassuarance. there is a video where theres lots o f blanket hung out and the babies go under those blankets to be fed. the rangers / carers found out calms them and feels like their mothers are there...so poor thing these babies

@thesummerlinemusic - thanks for that explaination. That would make sense. Usually the video's only show the abandoned ellie. Or have an explaination for the circumsatnces it was in. I sponser 2 of the orphans and love the work they do. My very favorite charity.

@jam052647 - definitely not an expert here but in following DSWT and the elie's they care for the very last thing they will ever do is separate a baby from a family that is able to nurture it. Most certainly the mom was gone in this case and there was no milk bearing maiden that could sustain the calf so it would sadly not make it with the herd and would wind up dying in the wild - most likely to be abandoned when it got too weak, Again - I'm not 100% definitive but know their work.

Researchers from the Bureau of African States' Tanzanian Affairs Regional Directorate have published the results of a 12 year study of organizations licensed to rescue and rehabilitate young, orphaned elephants. The report suggests methods currently employed by subject organizations are excessively expensive, inefficient, devoid of standardization, and ultimately ineffective. The directorate's report recommends abandoned, lost, or otherwise motherless infant/juvenile elephants be fustigated with cudgels. The study specifies the Louisville Slugger, Prime 917, composite model in either a 32 or 34 inch length. Once a baby elephant is crippled or rendered senseless, it should be transported to an area supporting a high concentration of lions and/or spotted hyenas. Specimens too large for transport should be beaten to death at the capture site and buried in such a way that only their tails and anuses remain above ground. Jackals, honey badgers and, in some instances, wild dogs will eat their way down a buried elephants rectum and fashion a den within the protective confines of the decedent's pelvis or rib cage.
This mess is completely artless and unimaginative. Not worth the effort.
