Watching this video after the announcement that Joost does not get to perform due to (allegations of) "agressive movements" from Joost to a camera crew is so unreal. It feels so unfair that the EBU gets to take away such a core moment within Joost's life, over such a small thing. trouwens ik ben nederlands, kwart fries. If you want to know something about the frisians then I'll tell you their secrets, they named themselves after the nordic goddess freya, freya is the goddess of freedom and fertility, the dutch word vrijen, vrijdag(friday/freyaday) comes from freya. We are freya's children who desire freedom. the fact joost made this entry already proves my hypothesis. Vrijen the word for intercourse literally refers to being free. Frisians desire freedom and EBU is denying them. This speaks volumes to where europe is aiming to head and how strong the human spirit truly is. @joostklein1
I am a Dutch person who normally does not care at all about EuroVision (I did not even know it was coming up, if you can believe it). I thought the entire show was just a collection of intentionally bad vapid pop. This video randomly came up in my recommendations and I figured I'd give it a watch, basically just to laugh at whatever nonsense we sent in this time, and how you could possibly fill half of an 50 minute video talking about it. I couldn't be more wrong, I found this to be an amazing video. It managed to make me actively care about the outcome of the EuroVision, when previously I had no idea about the range of genres represented in the show, let alone the underlying emotions behind many of the songs. My expectations were thoroughly shattered, and the level of research in this video (and several of the others I have watched since then) impressed me almost as much as the Frogger joke. Seriously, that one had me laughing so much I had to pause the video. Then right after watching this video I decided to google Joost to see how well he was doing, and found out that he was disqualified 15 minutes earlier??? :( What a damn rollercoaster of emotions. Unbelievable. My opinion as a brand new EuroVision aficionado may be of limited value, but I wish him much strength after this. The song is an actual banger that I am sure will live on long past this moment. Keep up the good work Joost and Overthinking It!

@@andreluismarin8095Great to hear he’s enjoying himself 💙 Btw did you see the video made by kids of a primary school (group 6, 7 and 8)? Check out Europapa OBS de Horizon. It’s fun and quite good.
I knew Europapa was genius, but god damn you made it even deeper. It already had everything: an ode to his parents, an ode to Europe, mentioning other countries, an ode to Dutch music, saying stuff in English, Italian and Germany, a huge dance part, a sad part. But it's a true work of art now.
Technically speaking we will never know. He was the third act to go to the finals during the second semi finals. But that's a random lineup, so it doesn't say anything on how popular he is. And he was DQ before the finals, so we will never know the points he would have gotten from the juries. It's the EBU who decided to disqualify him, not the juries . . . I think. But I wouldn't be surprised if I'm mistaken.
Watching this after what happened today at the Eurovision finale, it just makes me more mad at the injustice of it all. For Joost, this was a deepmy meaningful moment. Something he promised his late father and mother he would do. And he did do it! But then, after he was filmed against his will in an extremely vulnerable moment, he gets disqualified. I hope something is done to rectify this. This is horrible.
I got this video recommended during the finale and decided to watch it during the point giving. Took a break to see how the score was and the Netherlands showed up (well, the actual representative was missing) and.....Did we just got boo’ed? :(
We all know who really won. It's undeniably Joost, his music has reached a kpop girlie like myself who isn't even European. Wishing only the best things in the world for Joost
terrific video, the "bizarden" comparison with Joost is inspired. my favourite "hidden detail" of Europapa is at the start of the full version of the Outro. This begins "Een kruistocht in mijn spijkerbroek," i.e. "a crusade in my jeans." The reference is to the widely-beloved Dutch children's novel from 1973 by Thea Beckman, "Kruistocht in Spijkerbroek," in which a lad is transported by a time-machine back to the year 1212 and ends up in the Children's Crusade (a tragic episode of European history) --- book was filmed (big-budget Dutch production, English-language) with Johnny Flynn and Emily Watson in 2006.
i'm belgian and gen z but i read this book with my mom when i was a child and loved it :) and i still see it in book stores sometimes! i really didn't like that the movie removed leonardo and made up a love story with a girl who wasn't in the book instead. i feel like it really deserves a new adaptation, maybe a short series instead of a movie and make it more faithful to the book
I think the main reason that Europapa is so much better is not even how real or heartfelt it is, it is how well he succeeds in taking you along on his journey. Joost leaves absolutely nothing behind, and his story is both painful and beautiful. In contrast, Olly's entire thing seems to be just 'being gay'. I'm sure being LGBT+ comes with a host of stories and challenges, but the song doesn't really go to any of it. So you listen to Dizzy and it sounds good, and then you listen again knowing the inspiration and it falls flat. Listening to Europapa once will have you go 'wtf', you look at an interview, and you learn that Joost put his heart and soul in there. Then you listen again, and you see his past, present and future, his hopes and dreams, his fears and nightmares, his fond memories and his trauma, his pride and nostalgia, his anger and his joy, it's ALL THERE. It's a gut punch. And all the while, he's partying, like his life depends on it. It probably, unironically, does. Joost, through a million tiny things, invites you to go along with him. Olly, in contrast, wants you to look at him. To me, that contrast is more Dutch than windmills. We don't believe in superstars. Joost is one of us, and it feels like it.
This makes the injustice of the disqualification even more heartbreaking. I didn’t watch Eurovision this year (boycotting) but what a deserving winner.
I dont give two shit if they disqualified him. Being an non-eu person, I Wasn't even that invested in eurovision to begin with, but this is without a doubt, the best damn song from the contest and its message is something that deeply resonate with me. Nemo may have lifted the trophy, but Klein won it, and the spirit of Eurovision, which is one of Unity.
Don't know if it's because you've got more interesting artists and songs to analyze this year than usual, but you guys are on a hotstreak. This and the Greece video are some of the best work I've ever seen about the contest.
I'm shocked to hear that they didnt know how to label Otto. He's a solo comic act somewhat in fashion of Monty python. Couldn't name an old English stage act that does similar things as Otto tho...
I can’t believe you did this again… I didn’t care about Marina Satti before watching your video about her. I didn’t care about Joost before watching this video. Thank you, that was super interesting, I looked at him in totally different light.
Your review is as multi layered and in depth as Joost Klein's Europapa is constructed . By revealing this step by step, you're unearthing a gem. I want to express my respect for both both you and Joost. This is a one of a kind song that will be iconic anthem for years to come. Thank you for putting so much love in it!
After hearing the song luchtballon by joost klein for I think was the 3rd time, I realised I recognised the outro but I couldn't put my finger on it. I thought it was from this video and I'm glad I could find it. The timeline of seeing this video, all excited for eurovision. Than seeing joost's comment on it that warmed my hart. Then while waiting for the final hearing that he got disqualified and being absolutely devastated about it. To now hearing his new song clearly pointed somewhat towards eurovision or at least airing out his emotions about it, and then realising that the outro was from a very inspiring video I saw about a month ago . Absolutely crazy. You understand him exactly the way he meant it and he honored that by quoting you. It's making me want to cry 😢😅 absolutely beautifully full circle
I watched this video when it came out and it made me a fan of Joost Klein! Now I just heard his new song and thought I recognized the outro!! So cool :D
I have been so excited about "Europapa" since it came out. I told about it to my own father and he watched it's music video. Dad said that song was interesting calling it eurohumppapop (humppa is type of Finnish Dance music) and interpreted ending where sky is blue and yellow as remembrance of sympathy for Ukraine.
I also showed the music video to my father! And explained what it’s about. He is basically only listening to classical music, but he instantly liked it. I was so surprised and very happy about his reaction.
The colors in the end reminded me of some of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings. The ‘Last Supper’ scene reminded me of the light/dark tones of Rembrandt. The music video itself is a masterpiece of its own imo. That's the nice thing about art: it opens all kinds of valves in people's thoughts and feelings.
Ahh, watching this "the day after". Hear you speculate about Joost' next trauma free music. I think poor Joost has just been dealt another trauma by EBC. How ironic
Just so everyone know who Otto Waalkes is: He's a LEGEND in Germany. He's a comedian/actor/artist that's been around for decades and if you ever saw him in real life you'd be confused that man is a real person.
I come here after the release of Luchtballon and freaked out that Joost took your ending of the video to end his song Luchtballon. You told this amazing! Love from the Dutch!
You just told me some amazing things about Europapa I didn't know and I thought I knew a lot... The meaning of "stay here until I die" explained while you prove the older man in the video is Joost himself. And your tulip metaphor is brilliant. Thank you so much! ❤
Indeed, i keep hearing it on the radio, but it just sounded really dumb to me, the simplistic lyrics, the tacky "announcer voice" during the verses and the weak chorus singing (he's got a voice for voiceover work, not for singing or rapping). I wasn't aware that he also wears those weird clothes, i thought he was just another fake hipster with a mullet, but now i actually understand that it's all twisted. Still don't like the song though, but do have a better appreciation of Joost and i can stop cringing as much when i hear it again, hah.
since last week, I have saved Joost's songs and bought tickets to a concert next year. The duality of the music (happy surface level with deep sadness hidden within) hit home for me, and I can tell he is a genuine person with some real artistic talent, and that's why I'm going to keep him on my radar from now on
Thank you for putting in so much effort. As a Dutch person living on the other side of the world, the Joost phenomenon had passed me by. In one video, I'm up to speed. Not only that, very appreciative of Joost's art.
I noticed that at 0:47 in the music video for Europapa there is a giant stuffed version of Stitch from Lilo and Stitch. A movie (that came out during Joost's childhood in 2002) about a quirky young girl whose parents have died who feels like she doesn't fit in, struggles with managing her anger, and misses her deceased parents. She lives on an island, isolated from much of the world. The story begins when a strange, destructive alien named Stitch, who also doesn't have parents, crashes into her life. Lilo, Stitch, Lilo's sister Nani, and Nani's friend David (and even a few other aliens) form a found family that help each other through their difficulties. And Stitch, like Bloo (the main imaginary friend in Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends) is blue.
You wanna know more cartoon symbolisms with Joost? He similarly has the same life as Lewis from Meet The Robinsons, an underrated Disney film about an orphan who just wanted to meet his mother thru time traveling. And Lewis wears blue.🥹
There are many songs this year that talk about pretty serious things (Europapa, Zari, La Noia, Rim Tim Tagi Dim etc.) that are catchy or even sound ridiculous to some people. However, when you analyse it this way you can see that there's something behind these fast beats and funky clothes. As someone already said, by hearing an analysis like this you can listen to a song in a completely different way and start to even like it (if you didn't before). So thank you, Overthinking It, you're doing a great job!
And to think Eurovision used to have this image of being all glitz and ridiculousness. Thank you "Overthinking Eurovision" for showcasing the deep stuff.
Same here, although i still don't think it's a great track, as i grew up listening to "real" Hardcore, DJ Paul Elstak hasn't been known to be a "true" Hardcore DJ for ages, but the cheesy (no pun intended) lyrics make a lot more sense now. And although i'm not entirely a fan of the "gratuitous suffering", on the other hand, i was also a major Nirvana fan until Kurt was no more (when i was 10), which is exactly 30 years ago this month actually. So yeah, knowing all this, i don't dislike the track as much anymore, and i appreciate Joost more, but i still don't really expect it to do well, as i think that it just lacks energy to make it really exciting, and it doesn't have the emotional punch to make this some timeless classic, but it did well in the charts, i was surprised to hear that it topped it for 5 weeks. That example they used of DJ Paul Elstak's Rainbow in the Sky, that is an energetic chart classic, Elstak should've used some of that energy in this one. But yeah, i don't actually follow Eurovision, algorithm brought me here after watching an F1 video, but i was kinda curious to know who Joost really was, because i never watch Dutch TV anymore and only hear some songs on the radio at work. Not to end on a too morbid note, he's 26 now, just kinda wondering, he turns 27 in November this year, will he make it to 28 after this rebirth, or... y'know, Club 27, 50/50 chance imo. But i hope the best for him of course.
As a Brit I've been wary of UK writing songs specifically for Eurovision, as it's easy for someone to fall into the trap of writing a song that they *think* makes a good Eurovision song, when actually it doesn't because it's too kitschy, cheesy or generic. In the same podcast you referred to, they also mentioned that some of the songs they listened to were too "Eurovision-esque". I get thay they wanted a more commercial sounding song, but I'd be curious to hear some of these songs to see if any of them would have been a good pick. Just because a song isn't your typical commecial song, doesn't mean it can't be commercially successful, as evidenced by Joost. You make a good argument that actually writing a song specifically for Eurovision may actually bot be such a bad idea after all.
Interestingly, the reverse was the case for Europapa. Joost has explained in an interview that he would've loved to make it harder - as in, way more happy hardcore and gabber than it is now. Instead, they made the decision to throw a lot of pop in there, to appeal to a wider audience. It's a move that has probably saved the song: the gabber makes it stand out and is a wonderful tribute to a Dutch subculture that is still alive and thriving (!), but the pop makes it digestible to international listeners who aren't familiar with the genre - thus commercializing the song, but without losing its essence.
yeah I'm going to need to hear the rest of Olly's album to know if they made a mistake but it's probably a load of other radio hits. I think Dizzy probably has a staging plan they really want to execute, which makes Dizzy a song designed for a live show, with stronger radio songs to follow later in the year to profit off ESC.
Europapa perhaps is more Europop/Eurodance, that's something more relevant to central/mainland Europe than it has been to UK music. How he dresses and acts in that MV is likely more accepted in that context. Cultural differences
It might be, if you understand what a 'good Eurovision song' actually IS these days, which the souls charged with picking entries for the UK do NOT, paired with a record industry and artist's roster that thinks it's way too good for Eurovision and the artists that may be suitable and want to go never getting approached by the cabal in charge of picking entries. Honestly Sam Ryder seems to be more of an accidentally good choice than an informed one.
I don’t want us writing a song *for* Eurovision. I want us to send great singers who can perform well with great songs. Italy and Portugal never send ‘Eurovision’ songs. They send quality songs that they like and they consistently perform well.
Either the people that did the research are super in tune with Europe or they had to do a ton of research (or probably both). This is spot on, what a great analysis. I'm Dutch and even learned a few things!
I bet you, their fan Base on Discord is providing them with alot of facts from all the corners of Europe. But what amazing job to make the story so interesting and captivating!!! I didn't think I would watch this video in it's full but I got hooked to it.
This is exactly right. I don't consider myself an expert on Eurovision, Europe, music, or much of anything. No one should imagine for a moment I previously knew who DJ Gladde Paling was. But I've worked as a reporter before and this is the same thing. You read what's already out there, you ask a lot of questions, you make it all flow nicely from idea to idea, and you add some fart jokes. For each of the videos this year there were people on the Discord, Reddit, and elsewhere who were very generous with their time. When Joost commented on this video, I took a screenshot and sent it right to them. -MB
What an amazing analysis! Europapa is truly layered like an onion, I had a feeling of some of the hidden messages you brought up but not to this extent!
Your analysis of Joost's music and the music video for Europapa was lovely and covered everything I would have hoped for. He is the artist I'm most proud to share a generation and a homeland with.
I've never heard gabber pronounced "ha-ber" and it took me far too long to figure out what you were talking about. But this video is absolutely amazing. Seriously good job by everyone who contributed to this. The breakdown of Joost's influences, life and Europapa was phenomenal. You've done such stunning work this year with your videos.

The most American thing about this whole video is nothing to do with not knowing who Gary Barlow is, but to swiftly go on to compare the UK and Netherlands journeys at Eurovision to Hollywood movies.
This might probably be the single best video you guys have ever done. Great script, great pacing and great depth. This is amazing, please keep it up! :)
Lovely video, absolutely sold Europapa to whoever is watching this. It is a work of art that works on so many levels masquerading as a children's song. The absolute inversion of all inversions.
I havent seen anyone say this so i will; i really appreciate your effort in pronouncing the dutch words and places so well. You did that very well. Good job!
You know, I was watching and enjoying Eurovision since I can remember, never missing a contest for the past 30 years or so. But until the TH-cam algorithm showed me your channel, I was never truly IMMERSED in Eurovision, with all the context and real appreciation for the artists behind all those quirky songs. Thank you so much for all this amazing content, I had no idea how much I needed this in my life. ^^
Great video, but I can boil it down to one thing; Europapa is an interesting, bold entry with actual depth behind the kitsch, while Dizzy is an inoffensive but utterly standard, dull romantic lurve song we've all heard version of approximately five million times since birth.
You definitely did your research! Amazing video! We are super proud of Joost. I genuinely feel like Joost deserves to win when you look at his song in detail. Thank you for explaining this to the world. Wonderful job❤ Whatever the outcome, Joost already won for us Dutchies.
I Wrote A Song actually peaked at number 30 on its first week of release, a few weeks before the contest. It peaked at number 9 the week after the grand final. Hopefully Olly’s song will chart higher after the grand final.
What an excellent video! I knew the backstory to Europapa, being Dutch, despite that I still missed things like the Maastricht vlag, and this whole connection with Dizzy is masterfully laid out.
Watching this again after everything that happened is so sad. They both lost in the end. Olly with nil point from the televote and Joost's disqualification. It does seem like both of them are bouncing back now. Best of luck to both of them.
It’s the day of Eurovision final 2024 and those dark things you were mentioning in Joosts past now coming to fruition, allegedly… shame we don’t get a conclusion between what Europe would’ve chosen, my hope is that EBU and hopefully Joost/Netherlands can recover from this.

trouwens ik ben nederlands, kwart fries.

Keep up the good work Joost and Overthinking It!
hi guys, just wanted to say congratulations on getting SAMPLED INTO JOOST'S NEWEST SONG !??!?!?!!??!?!? i swear i was in absolute SHOCK WHEN I HEARD MATTS VOICE LIKE OH MY GOD. congratulations ARGHHHHHH !!!!!
For an American being able to get this so spot on is amazing. Did not know Americans were into Eurovision at all.
Great work!
Not even Europeans are into it, - ( apart from lgbtq, hairdressers, children and the artists family ). Normal adults watch anything else.
I been watching them for like close to a decade when some videos got barely past 1000views!

Congrats on being a part of Joost's new song "Luchtballon". It is very fitting :)
I knew I recognized that voice at the end of Luchtballon! That’s so amazing Joost put you in his song!!! 💙
43:14 "...and Europapa might not get a lot of love from the juries"
IF ONLY HE KNEW HOW RIGHT HE WAS
Technically speaking we will never know.
@@ZaphiraX I think we have all of the jury rankings, plus the Netherlands got 2nd in their semifinal
He used it to make a statement. Viva Palestina!

The Tale of Two Misfortunes
Incredible video! You told Joost’s story so well, and we Dutch people are so so proud of him!
terrific video, the "bizarden" comparison with Joost is inspired.
my favourite "hidden detail" of Europapa is at the start of the full version of the Outro.
This begins "Een kruistocht in mijn spijkerbroek," i.e. "a crusade in my jeans."
The reference is to the widely-beloved Dutch children's novel from 1973 by Thea Beckman, "Kruistocht in Spijkerbroek," in which a lad is transported by a time-machine back to the year 1212 and ends up in the Children's Crusade (a tragic episode of European history) --- book was filmed (big-budget Dutch production, English-language) with Johnny Flynn and Emily Watson in 2006.

i'm belgian and gen z but i read this book with my mom when i was a child and loved it :) and i still see it in book stores sometimes! i really didn't like that the movie removed leonardo and made up a love story with a girl who wasn't in the book instead. i feel like it really deserves a new adaptation, maybe a short series instead of a movie and make it more faithful to the book
@@leaf111 i would say Netflix needs to get on it but they ruined Brief voor de Koning
Exactly that.
Imagine my suprise while listening to joost's new release to hear audio from this video. Put a huge smile on my face
Don't know if it's because you've got more interesting artists and songs to analyze this year than usual, but you guys are on a hotstreak. This and the Greece video are some of the best work I've ever seen about the contest.

Seeing this video after Joost was kicked out this is terribly sad 😢
Seeing Otto Waalkes, my childhood's no 1 comedian, on a Eurovision video is something i really dreamed of
I'm shocked to hear that they didnt know how to label Otto. He's a solo comic act somewhat in fashion of Monty python. Couldn't name an old English stage act that does similar things as Otto tho...
I hate comedians with a passion, but Otto Walkes is one of a few exceptions. He's always been HILARIOUS.
We need to send Otto to Eurovision... simply so that can overthinking Eurovision can make a video overthinking Otto.
Maybe a mix of Weird Al and Monty Python is what i would call what otto has done
oh and he voiced Mushu in the 90s Mulan.
JUST WATCHED THIS AND MY JAW LITERALLY DROPPED WHEN I HEARD THE OUTRO, I LITERALLY NEVER KNEW WHERE IT HAD CAME FROM IN LUCHTBALLOON OML

Joost loves his onions, even raw.
So cool :D
Me too, I recognised it immediately. ❤
How ironic
Guys! Joost just released a new song and part of this video is included in it!!
Just so everyone know who Otto Waalkes is: He's a LEGEND in Germany. He's a comedian/actor/artist that's been around for decades and if you ever saw him in real life you'd be confused that man is a real person.
German and Frisian!
Your last words are part of his new song! That is so amazing! ❤️
I like how The Netherlands is sending entries in their native language in recent years.
The duality of the music (happy surface level with deep sadness hidden within) hit home for me, and I can tell he is a genuine person with some real artistic talent, and that's why I'm going to keep him on my radar from now on
This video was so much deeper than I expected. The bizarden metaphor was beautiful and now I'm actually fully crying
The sample in luchtballon(Joost new song). Congrats on making it
Thank you for putting in so much effort.
It looks like this one is gonna need to get a part 2 ;)
Wow you really made me rethink my opinion about this years Netherlands entry putting it down as „nonsense“ song
oh no! anything but nonsense!
@@Games_and_Music yes. that's morbid....and I'm worried now.
In his new song "Luchtballon" your words at the end of this video, the epiloque, are in that song. Did you knew that??. BIZAR
he was informed about that because it was first used in live gigs

This is exactly right. I don't consider myself an expert on Eurovision, Europe, music, or much of anything. No one should imagine for a moment I previously knew who DJ Gladde Paling was. But I've worked as a reporter before and this is the same thing. You read what's already out there, you ask a lot of questions, you make it all flow nicely from idea to idea, and you add some fart jokes.
