    I’m honestly shocked to see how many people aren’t seeing why the riffs of this song are GOD tier. I think people are just unfamiliar with the concepts in drone/shoegaze type metal. EVERYTHING in this song as well as the others he’s had this reaction to is perfect for the song. The switching between light in dark is what makes them captivating. I’m seriously blown away that people still prefer a basic structure as opposed to something new and innovative. Idk man… I just don’t get it. The mood of “unsettling” is so perfectly captured here. It’s cinematic almost. I do think it’s great to be honest however. So I still love this channel. But if I’m being honest… it just feels like the point of this stylistically is going over peoples heads. All their old stuff is pure gold

      I totally agree man. Even among Sleep Token fans, I think Nazareth is way underrated and the reason, I guess, is the same you mention, the "odd" structure. I mean, they're not even considering the chronology of these songs.

    • @the.edgyhippie
      @the.edgyhippie ปีที่แล้ว +6

      dude all their old stuff is like SPECIFICALLY cinematic, and it just flies over ppls heads😭 i PROMISE i’m not comin at you Sean, i do understand this is a hard aspect to grasp, it took me a good 5-10 listens to fully understand this song in specific. but you have to go into the song with the mindset that you are going to feel ‘unsettled’ (as mentioned above). their older sound capture the lightest of light and flowiness to the most chaotic evil and dissonant sounds you can get in music , it’s an acquired taste for most. their newer stuff is definitely more digestible but their old stuff is borderline Renaissance artwork and needs to be stared at and observed multiple times before you understand the full picture

    • @the.edgyhippie
      @the.edgyhippie ปีที่แล้ว +1

      although i’m glad Sean brought up the lead, because those notes that it’s hitting are extremely out of place , but if you think about it , that’s the point , it’s supposed to be out of place, unreasonable, and uncomfortable to listen to!

    • @twall91
      @twall91 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@the.edgyhippie well yes and no. I guess it feels out of place to those who are pretty accustomed to formulaic structures but I’ve been listening to a lot of proggier bands for a while now so all the intentional dissonance never really even feels off to me at all. I think all that type of stuff actually sounds great at this point. It helps find the pockets for each piece of the soundscape to really cut through BECAUSE they’re dissonant from one another. I really think this is more on the deep introspective side of things and completely agree with the above comment about it being closer to a renaissance piece of art

      Not sure if I agree with it going above anyones head. There are a few ST songs I'm not that into, this is one of them, even if I do see why someone would love this song it really puts me in a weird state of mind which I don't like. Nothing more to it. Has nothing to do with me not seeing that the riffs are good or not, just don't enjoy the song. I feel that your comment comes off as a bit elitist. Not trying to be rude or anything^^

    This is one of their best songs! It’s supposed to be dark. Even the beauty is haunting. It’s not for everyone, but this song is not a “happy” song. The synth part was soo dark and abstract. It was done on purpose. I love it.

    I think the next song you should react to is "When the Bough Breaks" it has the soft parts that you love but the heavy parts that you crave and they meld so well with each other. 😀

    The reaction to the change into the more unsettling chord progression and melody is priceless. I feel like we are very perceptive to sound and the effects it has on us. Which is why movies use sound a lot to set the mood. And its baked into our brains after years of learning to instinctively react to sound patterns to feel a certain thing. And if you arent used to enjoying that sound, you may feel the opposite of it. It makes you feel uncomfortable and unsettled, which in a horror movie is great. But in songs you really dont look for it, which makes sense.
    But whether you realize or not, all of Sleep Tokens songs use these effects. And whether you realize or not, this is just a more distinct and more extreme example. Whether its between the lyrics being dark, always, and the music sound maybe a bit lighter, like The Love You Want for example.

    Hey man, always love hearing your thoughts on these. I agree that overall this song is kind of a miss, but I wanted to share some of my thoughts on what you said. So I definitely think new ST is better than their older stuff, but you gotta consider that they made their come up through the metal scene. The majority of their fan base are metal enjoyers or sad music enjoyers. Not only that, but the whole Yin and Yang thing is consistent throughout their whole sound just in different ways I suppose. The music is typically pretty, but the lyrical content and themes of the music are always very dark(depression, loneliness, self harm, toxic relationships, yearning for a relationship, etc). I don’t think they have a single song that is actually happy, I would say bitter sweet is the closest it gets. So the super heavy bits and minor key ambience has always made sense to me I guess. Anyway bro, sorry for the paragraph. Would love to see “Take Aim” by Sleep Token at some point! See you in the next one.

    • @Smithysmithin
      @Smithysmithin ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Take Aim and Give are ones I really wanna see.
      But i feel like even songs that i used to or currently enjoy less by Sleep Token, I still really enjoy haha. They're just so unique that it takes a while to really feel it and get into it. While others may instantly get it.

      @@Smithysmithin for sure man. Take Aim was one of my least favorite songs from Sundowning and then became one of my favorite songs by them.

    The essence of the band is auditory performance art exploring thought provoking elements. I can see why many won’t see the reason for the darkest parts of some songs or their lack of finality. I appreciate all of their expression of the layers that make our reality of mixed emotions come to life while acknowledging that darkness is apart of life. Deep performance art like a painting with a soundtrack maybe. They make me think, which I appreciate because they use symbolism in the lyrics and videos. Much love

    Now that you are going through these earlier single releases, I think you'd def love Fields of Elation! Has most of those components you love and still has that super early feel where they are just starting to find their direction. Worship!

    I knew before I even watched this that it would be the same as your Nazareth and Calcutta reactions. I have to admit that even though these tracks were what made me fall in love with ST in the first place, they've gotten so much better at blending their sounds together with each release that the drops on these tracks now feel pretty jarring. Hoping the takeaway is that you heard at least the foundation of what they would become, since you clearly love what they are now.
    Love the honesty, brother, keep it up! 🙌

    To each his own, but, to me, this and the other two songs on the first E.P. are among their best work. Along with Calcutta and Jaws, they capture the progressive side Sleep Token got away from on Sundowning and especially This Place Will Become Your Tomb. I get that people like their newer stuff better - and I dig it too - but this stuff is just god-tier, in my opinion.

  • @Jay_Money23

    There older stuff is definitely more progressive. Sometimes takes multiple lessons to really get it.

    Sleep Token really came into their own with Jaws and The Way That You Were. Their first two EPs are still good imo and sometimes I vibe hard with them, but they're a lot more progressive and were intended for a different shoegazy direction. Not as good as the rest of their discography and not as mature musically as they are now.

    Songs like this, Calcutta, Nazareth, while I love them, they are very unpolished compared to modern sleep token. Vessel was very much still figuring it out at this point. Jaws was really like, the beginning of the polished version of this band.

    Yeah, unfortunately their older stuff definitely misses some of the elements you crave in a sleep token song. Still, here's my suggestions for more sleep token songs.
    Drag Me Under
    Take Aim
    Fall For Me
    The Night Does Not Belong To God
    Don't listen to these hoping for a drop though, they're beautiful songs.
    Also, idk if it's just me but you've been seeming like you might be down in these past few videos for a few weeks now, hope everything is cool.
