It's actually a very smart narrative choice. A way to put the companions cast front and center while emphasising that Tav does exist in this iteration and therefore none of the six companions are the leader and they are all of equal importance. Balances them out while also benching the questions of "what is Tav doing".

Makes a joke? lol she was on his ass constantly xD, so he gave as good back. Don't get me wrong I'm not having a go at Devora, she played Lae'zel perfectly. But characterising it as she making ONE joke and that leading to Tim/Gale commenting on her every mistake is just wrong. And it makes Gale seem petty and butthurt.
This has fully created the headcanon in my mind that Tav is the strategist of the group and the first combat without their input confused the hell outta everyone
I love this comment because unless you play multiplayer, Tav/Player automatically has everyone on board with a single plan of action. Tav has to be the strategist because the Player places everyone on the board themselves. It also makes sense for “why” the origin characters would be deferring to Tav in a leadership position. Great way of putting it into words!
I need an easter egg now where if Gale and Asterion are both in your party and Asterion gets a nat 1 on a check, the narrator describes how he is distracted by Gales boots.
It's especially funny because I have some boots that increase your jumo distance, which Gale and Astarion have been sharing. Maybe Astarion is just jealous that it's Gale's turn with the boots.
Love Mark being like, "Oh, if you wanna do something not on your character sheet, like picking Scratch up and trying to run away, you can!" Samantha: "I'm on fire, dear." LMAO.
Playing off Astarion's failed perception check as him becoming fascinated with Gale's boots is both totally on point for the character and really creative roleplay.
He seems to be by far both the most experienced roleplayer as well as player. He also seems to understand his character the best, though the rest are learning fast.
I absolutely love that Devora isn’t playing to win but playing exactly like Lae’zel would. She understands her PERFECTLY, and the same goes for the rest of the actors.
“I’ll give you the short of it… I’d like to sort of charge in right in the middle there - how does that work?” *translating to Gith* “Chk! I will simplify for you. I would like to manuever to the center of the enemy position. You will tell me how, istik.”
I love that they fangirl over each other so much...but the goat is the narrator. They all looked at her like she was the most engaging and interesting creature in existence.
It's amazing how all of them simultaneously look nothing like their characters and look identical to them. Like, just looking at Theo's face, he looks nothing like Wyll. But then you see how he moves, you see those broad-ass shoulders and you think, yeah, that's the Blade of Frontiers right there.
Even funnier when you look at his sneak attack animation in the game when using bows or crossbows. He does a little jump into the attack. It's really nice lmao
she's great, but i wish they also have a male voice actor with a deep soothing voice like the Civ 5 voice actor. Sadly that voice actor passed away. Having 2 different narrators to choose from would help (at least me) with doing and finishing multiple playthroughs.
@@XpVersusVista Brian Bowles was the narrator of divinity original sin 2 (another GREAT AND AMAZING game of Larian studio). I really like his voice :) not as soothing as Amelia's voice, but still amazing. His voice is a good option for future games
DM: "I might even have a little thing for this..." And he pulls out a purple plate to put over the figures. I was really hoping for a black light or a transparent shroud. Then they have to take off the plate for the next action. Haha. Another homebrew D&D moment there.

I wasn’t even thinking about that and went through most of the game making Karlach pet Scratch because it was so dang cute. Guess Scratch is resistant.
Right? It was interesting going from explaining the rules to everyone (who caught on really fast) to someone who knew the rules AND knew how to play his specific class very well.

Astarion no-scoping ranged attacks while winking at Gale, Shadowheart immediately casting guidance at the first opportunity, Lae'zel dunking on Gale constantly, Karlach whipping out a whistle and saving Scratch... I love how Astarions voice actor takes so naturally to both his character, his class as a thief, and his grasp of the mechanics of the game. The wink to Gale as he goes somersaulting past. His idea with the lamp where unfortunately the dice failed him. This kind of swashbuckling bravado is what being a DnD rouge is all about.

tbh they are quite perfect to play their characters in live action. Only difference is Shadowheart will have such a pinchable cheeks, and we'd need to CG 2 meters high Karlach anyway.
There's a fantastic interview with him and "Dan Allen Gaming" where he has said "I don't think I'll ever get over the character," it's by far his favorite role he's ever played.
My DM decided he would just tell me when I CAN'T cast guidance instead of me asking to cast it every time, and he has flavoured it that my character is just constantly muttering under her breath all the time which also gives her disadvantage on stealth if I don't specify that she has stopped muttering while she's sneaking 😂

I started taking notes after our DM had a 4h discussion with me, so he could use me to move the plot forward cuz all of us were stupid XD Decided to keep that up and now I'm the note-taker... Our DM often asks me for my notes or list of NPCs met and I'm happy to help XD

I’m the party note-taker, and I’m also playing a very goody-two-shoes cleric named Kasaadi who would absolutely try a little too hard to be a Good Adventurer(tm). All that to say, whenever something comes up that not even the DM remembers, someone goes “maybe Kasaadi knows???” and I go flipping frantically through my notes 😅💖
I like how the first part just goes the same way as it went for me in the first act: Wyll takes on too many enemies and dies, Lae just misses every shot, Gale casts spells that do zero damage, Karlach and Astarion deal with enemies in style
That's what Tav gets for not romancing Astarion. Unromanced Astarion is the stray cat that finds you convenient as long as you feed and shelter it but doesn't fully trust you. Romanced Astarion is the tamed cat that headbumps your leg and hops onto your lap for cuddles when you're feeling down.

Absolutely lost it when Astarion fumbled the trickshot with the lamp, and adored Laezel just being Laezel. Now I wish the narrator would read loads of my favourite books as audiobooks - she's got such a good voice!
I just love the way Neil spent the whole session embarassing Tim 😭 It was really giving: "I am enjoying our walks together. Aren't you, Gale?" - "Hmm.. Sure! In Silence."
I might be completely wrong on this but if my extroverted senses are right, Tim is absolutely terrified (but holding it together), especially in the beginning, and I think Neil was trying to help Tim to feel more at ease by engaging him. It's adorable 🥹🥹🥹
@@msbroomstick1 Neil reminds me so much of an old high school friend. She was so bubbly and inclusive, but had a grace and poise about her, that you could see if you really looked.
I think it is because they are legit friends, according to Neil, and "not the fake TV friend". They seem to be the most comfortable doing their banters together.
And him immediately going down in a fight is totally on point too, at least for me xD. I do tend to try... ambitious flanks with him that don't always go well

@@Hawk7886 True, but I'm commenting more on the parallel potential of it going badly and Wyll was worried for a minute that he screwed up things. Fortunately Gale is sort of a badass minus the whiffed damage.
It seams nobody picked up Samantha's (Karlac player/VA) "I would like to rage against the dying of the light" being both a really cool ass way to say you're raging, and a perfect quotation of poetry, that exactly captured the moment. Line of the session.
It would definitely be amazing, but I'm pretty sure the hold-up is the actors not wanting to commit to something so time consuming, not Larian. Afterall, its free exposure for Larian
@JnEricsonx I love Critical Role, but they are a different case haha. I would love for the BG3 cast to commit to a campaign, but it's their first time playing and presumably they want to continue their careers and not play DnD for a living

Completely understand that these people are some very busy and very talented actors who have full schedules but this was such a delight to watch. Would love to see this group play again!
Probably the thing I love most about Mark's DM-ing style, especially with newer players, is when they try to do something that isn't intentional in the rules and instead of just "sorry, that's not how it works"-ing them, he just goes, "That's not usually how that's used, but I love it, so let's do it!" It's the ultimate form of yes-and-ing and helps new players feel confident in their decision-making. I am taking notes!
That was an amazing reaction to her usage of the spell - and to just give it a 50% chance of "Sure, that is how it works" was great. Bonus points to him for explaining to them his logic since they may not have understood what he was doing.
Jennifer acting out 'Cure Wounds' as Shadowheart saying "Shar shar shar" while waving her hands over Wyll was fucking hilarious and I NEED this animated.
It is very rare for me to pay attention to voice actors outside of their respective games. But Larian Studios hired an INCREDIBLE cast, that sound so authentic at all times, it's incredibly enamouring. Always more!

@@filipematheus5070 I'm not a native English speaker but I'm generally against dubbed versions of anything that's not targeted for young children. Mainly because it helps teens/adults learn the language better and I find that often times the companies put the most amount of money into hiring voice actors for whatever the original language of the game/film/etc was. Like I wouldn't watch an originally Japanese anime dubbed in English or my native language I'd rather have it subtitled and use Japanese audio. Same with things like sitcoms, it would be very odd for me not to hear Friends in English because a lot of the jokes also fly over your head.
I LOVE how you can see how much Neil has been waiting to roleplay Astarion in an actual game. It makes me feel guilty how much I left him alone at camp XD
I really do love watching people play D&D for the first time. It’s very intimidating at first but the more you play and flex your imagination the easier it becomes. Having a competent DM is key and you don’t get much better than this guy.
Amazing the different levels of "putting on" the voice. Neil sounds completely different from Astarion but can slip into it easily. Tim just sounds like Gale normally.

This is honestly a master class in Dming for new players. Asking them to describe how they imagine, direct explanations and gives them plenty of options
As a quite new player: I also feel like it helped me a lot to get to know the game better. The first time I was playing DnD and the first few videos I watched about it I was so lost XD But this was a joy to follow and now I am really motivated to try again!
Not really, leading question sure. He just described all their actions for them then said what did you do, and they repeat what he described, and did not give them much room. Some strange things also like letting them role to intimidate the darkness.. get its a stage show but its not a master class in Dming for new players. Then when they do its like hes worried about losing the spot light and interrupts with childish comments like "holy super soakers" breaking any immersion. Don't do that to your players ever. Describing AC to players finally only once they are being attacked by him.. does not refer to it as Armour Class but calls it anything but. Don't know why the DM is annoying me so much. The cast are AMAZING though and did well with him as their DM. 55:12 hes just making rules, it does not cost you extra movement to pass through an ally's space. Enemies have to be 2 sizes larger and then its difficult terrain or use a Tumble. DM is terrible for new players learning the game. Straight after hes making skill checks to add bonus to attack rolls for jumping off people... This is not D&D5e but some random messy homebrew. To be fair to other players he needs to keep that rule in place, id be dash kipping off stuff every turn after that thinking its a table top move like the Larion weapons. The player described something well and as a DM if you want to reward it and keep pace don't give them a skill check to fail, just say awesome description, you get Advantage from the elevated position. Around 1:27:00 lets Laz cleave without Great Weapon Master feat also... Dont give players feats they do not have. it undermines those who took them as choices and you have to keep it up for everyone else. Not even gonna talk about it hitting Wyll or how that would make a player feel being sat doing nothing for so long to be removed by DM nonsense. End of 1st session. Sure they are time constrained again its a show, not a real game. But the appearance of the DM npc to end the encounter with a sentence, meaning nothing had any impact of player urgency is disrespectful to the players and then to have wyll waste time making a death save when everyone is now safe was pointless. Again get he's understress but hes so back and forth. Like after the narrator leaves at the start of Act 2, he shuts the party down, no more checks, you know everything, thats all your getting.. then at 2:11:50 ish he full backtracks and starts offering out information checks as the party have no direction. Total nonsense.
@cypher7523 He's actually a really good DM, and does loads of proper campaigns. This one in particular was just a fun mess around, 1 shot session, organised by Larion. Mark is under immense time restraints, and the party don't know what they're doing, excluding Neil. This isn't an introduction into DnD, or a tutorial. He's guiding them to where he needs them within his time limit, for the content. Mark did incredibly well with what he's got.
Baldur's Gate was my first 'real' taste of DnD after a miserable attempt at a zoom campaign in 2020 with friends who had also never played. This video alone has taught me SO much more than I ever imagined it could haha.
My first two rolls of BG3 were a nat 20 inspecting the console on the nautiloid to make sure it wouldn't kill Shadowheart immediately followed by a nat 1 trying to actually use it. I needed a 2 or higher to free her. 💀
P l e a s e, my tav's inventory is a shit show of herbs, gold, scrolls, potions, poisons, and tons of crap I need to pawn off for gold (chalices, rotting food, random gemstones, etc). Meanwhile everyone else has like 4 health potions, arrows for Astarion, maybe 1-5 scrolls, and nothing else.
I gave all my spells to Gale, my potions to Astarion and food and equipments to Karlach.. my Tav keeps the arrows (as a rogue/ranger).. It's a bit troublesome, but keeps me sane when I need to find some items..
They can't be trusted! I left a handful of potions in Astarion's inventory and he immediately popped off a firework and chugged Invisibility, Hill Giant Strength, and Greater Healing on the very first round of the thrall ambush!
That's partly because BG3 had to make a lot of small but very significant shifts in the rules from actual D&D, to account for being a video game.@@UltralightMeme
As a lover of DnD and tabletop playing I would HIGHLY recommend Dimension 20 and anything with Brennan Lee Mulligan. He's fantastic both as DM and player.
@@ClanRena -Enunciation (is that what it's called?)- Emphasis and pace. Been reading occasionally for my nephew, it's a bit fun to try out. You can give different characters certain personalities without changing pitch or tone (much) Amelia is *EXTREMELY* good at this.
Larian consolidated themselves as legends after making BG3, their name is not going to pass unnoticed anymore, the game is already known as one of the greatest games in history.
@@absolutereality8350 Larian has made many great games and while DOS2 sort of gained some acclaim outside the CRPG genre, BG3 has broken into the mainstream and people who had never ever considered playing a CRPG before are playing and loving it.
@@silverwolfe3636 Agreed. I don't want to downplay how awesome of a job Larian did but they also hit at the perfect time when DnD is having a resurgence and CRPG's are starting to gain traction again as well. I am very excited for the Xbox launch.
I mean it's par for the course for my first playthrough. Was a Wood Elf Beast Master Ranger/Thief Rogue and romanced Shadowheart. We had like 5 pets between us going into post-game story (Scratch, Owlbear Cub, Beast Tamer familiar from Ranger, Animal Companion from Beast Master, then she had the gloves from the shadar kai in act 2 to summon a Raven familiar)
I absolutely love the patience that Mark brings as a DM. He knows they are just beginners so he alters and bends the rules a little bit so that they can play out their fantasies and actions so they can be more engaged and have more fun. Such a lovely DM ❤
The "rules" are there to provide consistent guidelines. Allowing Laezel to do a cleave attack through both spirits with the left over damage makes 100% sense with physics and role play. If the rules keep any of us from having fun, the game isn't working. I think I'm going to allow that in my games from now on for anyone with a great weapon.

@@RevAnakinthat isn't even against the rules either. There's an optional role of cleave, which works exactly how he worked it in. I'm personally a massive fan of it, especially if you work it in where players have to explain how they cleave. A rapier isn't going to be able to cleave through two monsters horizontally, but if one is behind the other, or you've position yourself to put one behind the other, it makes enough sense.

But since it would be the suits in netflix leading this i think they would fuck up like with the latest witcher series (after they kicked Cavill out)
I'm rewatching this video a second time and I'm realizing just how much I LOVE these characters. Now that I have over 300hrs in the game, these actors are so very much appreciated for the very hard work and feelings they put into their characters. Hasbro, you royally screwed up by letting Larian go. It's Larian's vision that brought these amazing actors together. BG3 will never die.
Honestly I'm so happy to see someone that ISNT critical role getting a big sponsor episode. They get all the fun, it's nice to see them share sometimes.
Difficult to compare CR are a bunch of VA AND friends AND TTRPG players. Here just paid VA discovering D&D. doesn't mean I wouldn't appreciate another team of VA doing D&D. And the episodes around 2 hours are more manageable. doesn't mean they couldn't be a formidable team. (Do confess Amalia coming to do the presentation scenes. that's a total killer)
True enough, makes sense for them to sponsor the biggest fish for the most exposure of BG3 - it's probably because the VA are located in the UK, and Larian located in EU
@@pralinor I think they were talking about High Rollers and Critical Role not the VA's on this promotionel episode and the traditional pc cast of critical role. Pointing out that is was nice to see this promotional adventure of the Va's of Baldurs gate playing on High Rollers with Mark instead of on critical role with Matt. Though a large part of the decision might be due to practical and mondane things like geography, I agree with the sentiment.

I love how Astarions voice actor takes so naturally to both his character, his class as a thief, and his grasp of the mechanics of the game. The wink to Gale as he goes somersaulting past. His idea with the lamp where unfortunately the dice failed him. This kind of swashbuckling bravado is what being a DnD rouge is all about.

I like how the first part just goes the same way as it went for me in the first act: Wyll takes on too many enemies and dies, Lae just misses every shot, Gale casts spells that do zero damage, Karlach and Astarion deal with enemies in style

I might be completely wrong on this but if my extroverted senses are right, Tim is absolutely terrified (but holding it together), especially in the beginning, and I think Neil was trying to help Tim to feel more at ease by engaging him. It's adorable 🥹🥹🥹

Probably the thing I love most about Mark's DM-ing style, especially with newer players, is when they try to do something that isn't intentional in the rules and instead of just "sorry, that's not how it works"-ing them, he just goes, "That's not usually how that's used, but I love it, so let's do it!" It's the ultimate form of yes-and-ing and helps new players feel confident in their decision-making. I am taking notes!
Permissive DMs are always the best DMs. Rule of Cool and Rule of Funny are a good enough reason to let the players try basically anything they want.
That was an amazing reaction to her usage of the spell - and to just give it a 50% chance of "Sure, that is how it works" was great. Bonus points to him for explaining to them his logic since they may not have understood what he was doing.

@@filipematheus5070 I'm not a native English speaker but I'm generally against dubbed versions of anything that's not targeted for young children. Mainly because it helps teens/adults learn the language better and I find that often times the companies put the most amount of money into hiring voice actors for whatever the original language of the game/film/etc was. Like I wouldn't watch an originally Japanese anime dubbed in English or my native language I'd rather have it subtitled and use Japanese audio. Same with things like sitcoms, it would be very odd for me not to hear Friends in English because a lot of the jokes also fly over your head.
@MinaeVain I always go with the original if possible too, it helps you learn other languages and enjoy the performance as it was meant to be

I really do love watching people play D&D for the first time. It’s very intimidating at first but the more you play and flex your imagination the easier it becomes. Having a competent DM is key and you don’t get much better than this guy.
Amazing the different levels of "putting on" the voice. Neil sounds completely different from Astarion but can slip into it easily. Tim just sounds like Gale normally.

This is honestly a master class in Dming for new players. Asking them to describe how they imagine, direct explanations and gives them plenty of options
As a quite new player: I also feel like it helped me a lot to get to know the game better. The first time I was playing DnD and the first few videos I watched about it I was so lost XD But this was a joy to follow and now I am really motivated to try again!
Not really, leading question sure. He just described all their actions for them then said what did you do, and they repeat what he described, and did not give them much room. Some strange things also like letting them role to intimidate the darkness.. get its a stage show but its not a master class in Dming for new players.
Then when they do its like hes worried about losing the spot light and interrupts with childish comments like "holy super soakers" breaking any immersion. Don't do that to your players ever.
Describing AC to players finally only once they are being attacked by him.. does not refer to it as Armour Class but calls it anything but. Don't know why the DM is annoying me so much.
The cast are AMAZING though and did well with him as their DM.
55:12 hes just making rules, it does not cost you extra movement to pass through an ally's space. Enemies have to be 2 sizes larger and then its difficult terrain or use a Tumble.
DM is terrible for new players learning the game.
Straight after hes making skill checks to add bonus to attack rolls for jumping off people... This is not D&D5e but some random messy homebrew. To be fair to other players he needs to keep that rule in place, id be dash kipping off stuff every turn after that thinking its a table top move like the Larion weapons.
The player described something well and as a DM if you want to reward it and keep pace don't give them a skill check to fail, just say awesome description, you get Advantage from the elevated position.
Around 1:27:00 lets Laz cleave without Great Weapon Master feat also... Dont give players feats they do not have. it undermines those who took them as choices and you have to keep it up for everyone else. Not even gonna talk about it hitting Wyll or how that would make a player feel being sat doing nothing for so long to be removed by DM nonsense.
End of 1st session. Sure they are time constrained again its a show, not a real game. But the appearance of the DM npc to end the encounter with a sentence, meaning nothing had any impact of player urgency is disrespectful to the players and then to have wyll waste time making a death save when everyone is now safe was pointless.
Again get he's understress but hes so back and forth. Like after the narrator leaves at the start of Act 2, he shuts the party down, no more checks, you know everything, thats all your getting.. then at 2:11:50 ish he full backtracks and starts offering out information checks as the party have no direction.

@cypher7523 He's actually a really good DM, and does loads of proper campaigns.
This one in particular was just a fun mess around, 1 shot session, organised by Larion. Mark is under immense time restraints, and the party don't know what they're doing, excluding Neil. This isn't an introduction into DnD, or a tutorial. He's guiding them to where he needs them within his time limit, for the content.
Mark did incredibly well with what he's got.
Baldur's Gate was my first 'real' taste of DnD after a miserable attempt at a zoom campaign in 2020 with friends who had also never played. This video alone has taught me SO much more than I ever imagined it could haha.
Gale making a clutch ray of frost with double damage only to min out is my BG3 experience.
Man the way he was so incredibly hyped for it all to end in crushing disappointment, I felt that lol

P l e a s e, my tav's inventory is a shit show of herbs, gold, scrolls, potions, poisons, and tons of crap I need to pawn off for gold (chalices, rotting food, random gemstones, etc).
Meanwhile everyone else has like 4 health potions, arrows for Astarion, maybe 1-5 scrolls, and nothing else.
I gave all my spells to Gale, my potions to Astarion and food and equipments to Karlach.. my Tav keeps the arrows (as a rogue/ranger)..
It's a bit troublesome, but keeps me sane when I need to find some items..
They can't be trusted! I left a handful of potions in Astarion's inventory and he immediately popped off a firework and chugged Invisibility, Hill Giant Strength, and Greater Healing on the very first round of the thrall ambush!

I mean it's par for the course for my first playthrough. Was a Wood Elf Beast Master Ranger/Thief Rogue and romanced Shadowheart. We had like 5 pets between us going into post-game story (Scratch, Owlbear Cub, Beast Tamer familiar from Ranger, Animal Companion from Beast Master, then she had the gloves from the shadar kai in act 2 to summon a Raven familiar)

I absolutely love the patience that Mark brings as a DM. He knows they are just beginners so he alters and bends the rules a little bit so that they can play out their fantasies and actions so they can be more engaged and have more fun. Such a lovely DM ❤
The "rules" are there to provide consistent guidelines. Allowing Laezel to do a cleave attack through both spirits with the left over damage makes 100% sense with physics and role play. If the rules keep any of us from having fun, the game isn't working. I think I'm going to allow that in my games from now on for anyone with a great weapon.

@@RevAnakinthat isn't even against the rules either. There's an optional role of cleave, which works exactly how he worked it in. I'm personally a massive fan of it, especially if you work it in where players have to explain how they cleave. A rapier isn't going to be able to cleave through two monsters horizontally, but if one is behind the other, or you've position yourself to put one behind the other, it makes enough sense.

Pointing out that is was nice to see this promotional adventure of the Va's of Baldurs gate playing on High Rollers with Mark instead of on critical role with Matt. Though a large part of the decision might be due to practical and mondane things like geography, I agree with the sentiment.
