@@renviluan2842 i am not sure if it still applies, but in the past, it's considered snobby for a guy to refuse a shot, especially if they don't give some kind of excuse (i gotta be early at work tomorrow, i have exams, i am sick with a chronic disease).
The drunken master literally cleans up, throws away the garbage, washes the glasses and dishes, ferries his/her mates back home or tucks everyone to bed then goes to work at 5 in the morning.
Love this reaction...for any drinking session nowadays in the Philippines, it is okay to ask for a separate glass for yourself...and also it is common now that "inuman" (drinking) sessions are provided with separate glasses...Just tell the host or the "tanggero" that you need your own glass...the group will understand it.
If you are a friend, though most Filipinos treat foreigners as one, some Filipinos treat it as an offense not to take at least one shot. We call it respeto which in English means respect, basically you have to take at least one shot of alcohol
You usually would just share a glass with friends or family. The importance of the shared glass is to make sure everyone takes a shot, everyone should get drunk and wasted and spill their secrets and do embarassing things so you can laugh about it tommorrow
"Sharing one glass" is done by only close friends and family, and this practice is done mostly in provinces, but in big cities, this is not usually done... I think this video is made for "fun" and this guy is a comedian and vlogger in the Philippines.
Yeah you have a choice having separate glasses , filipinos are very understanding that you are not used to the tradition, as long the celebration continous, no problem with that, enjoy to the maxx! hehehe
you can say to the tangiro that "I want to have my own glass"..just turn your glasses around cheering each other..that's ok with filipino if you want to have your own glass..but he they will still give you beer or whiskey or rum when your glass is empty..
most of those who give only one glass use mostly groups, friends and close friends.. but most the filipinos, like me. I like to have my own glass.. and many filipinos like to have their own glass every time they drink..
Been in the southern Philippines 10 yrs . You will be given your own glass, you will get ice for your beer. Fork and spoon, no knife is silverware. If it is not soup, it's finger food. Rice is the main dish, everything else is a condiment. The Phils is a wonderful place. The people are poor. Most workers make 5 dollars for a 10hr day. Please don't bargain, tip everyone you can. They will be truly grateful.
Whenever there is a drinking session, people tend to first see who they will be drinking with and are considerate by asking questions that start with 'Is it okay?' So don't worry too much; we consider the people we will be drinking with. And in addition to your plans for travel, be privy about it and only let a few people know on your destinations. Make safety a priority still and don't worry. It will be a great adventure to you guys.
Given the risk of covid, it would be safer to just have a separate glass or paper cup. Sane folk won't be offended. Do prep a budget for bottled water. Water here is generally safe to drink, but you might need to acclimate to it. Different areas will have water of varying... gastric acceptability. Better to go with bottled water if you're not staying for the long term. I hope you have a great stay. :)
Just a background on the guy and his Aussie accent. He's Bogart the Explorer (a dig on Dora the Explorer and a parody of Steve Irvin). I knew him as a drummer and a really funny guy. He actually did interviews with international artists using this persona.
Tagay or using only one glass in a drinking session being passed around is an aged old tradition, it is usually used only between group of friends (close friends) and or family. If you are an outsider you can always request for your own personal glass. I personally also have an issue with that but with friends and family it is actually fun and crazy. I hope this will be of help to both of you, cheers! 🙂😜🇵🇭
For a lot of drinking session, it's usually beer, everyone got their own bottle, so you'd be fine if you drink beer. For Gin and Rum, it's a shared glass for everyone. BUT if the group is kind of strangers, it's customary to not touch the glass with your lips, you just toss the liquid into your mouth. For close friends, you can go ahead and drink however you like. That being said, a lot of people are also considerate if you're not into sharing glass and they will give you your separate glass. BUT, you still have to drink ONLY when it's your turn.
During the pandemic, a lot of tagayan participants were sent into isolation because one of the participants became positive. To prevent any further complications that the government had to ban the selling of alcoholic drinks
nah you don't need to share the glass. just grab some glass or two and then just join the group. as long as you are in the group doing the round robin sequence, you are fine. you can do the sharing of glass if you knew the other drinkers very well. we Filipinos also tend to drink the whole bottle and regularly we aren't done with one or two bottles. we buy again to a local nearby store just to continue the drinking session as long as we can still drink. lol have fun in the Philippines guys! enjoy!
Yes sharing of glass in a drinking session is very common to a close knit group of family and/or friends😁 but not to everyone, not especially to guests. But if the guest pleases he may share too😊 in most cases the guests have their own glass each😄
Nahhh.. it's OK for you guys to have your own cup or glass during the drinking sessions. Filipinos are the most understanding people around. ..those one glass thing are for the hard core within the group drunkards only. .. no issues having your own glass.. not at all. 👍😁
expect loads of culture shock when you come here. The transportation, the traffic, the people, and the culture and traditions itself, but yeah, welcome in advance guys!
You dont have to worry, the sharing of the shot glass is the traditional way. But because of the onset of Covid, the same is already shun and drinking sessions nowadays are done with individual glasses or straight from the bottle of each.
Usually, sharing a glass from stranger means like welcoming to the group/family but people before offer that to a stranger then and only then if refused like he said could possibly lead to shanking which became a meme on the later. Or just simply say, we dont have the funds to do drinking session thats why its possible to do it everyday with everyone sharing the bills as they say. 😂
1. We share the same glass in a drinking session 2. There will always be a singer. Or better if the entire drinking party are singers/musicians. 3. Oily food is a must. 4. Expect one that doesn't get drunk, one who gets drunk easily, the wild one, the runner and the story teller. Escape goats are rare. 5. There are some groups with drama actors/actresses, wherein they will complain about their exes when they get drunk. 6. Don't be shy when you're asked to sing when there's a videoke machine. It doesn't matter if you're out of tune.😉 PS Bogart interviewed Hugh Jackman before for the movie Chappie, and Hugh was surprised of his accent. He also plays drums and even have videos that he jammed with some local anad foriegn rock artists.

It would be amazing to meet you such awesome people.
@@TouchyReactions Looking forward to it. In case you need any of my information if you want to contact me please let me know. Our family will be glad to host you if you are in Davao.
As a native filipino buy hard alcohol if it is in manila buy gin if it is mindanao buy tanduay cuz in manila loves gin mostly while in the southern part like hard the most cuz tanduay has 80% content and if u want another glass for u only just ask everybody is it okay to have another glass cuz...(your reason even its a lie just have a reason) and they will respect it and happy for u asking for that so that they will know your part
In drinking with people you just met or people you don't know, it's fine to have your own glass. Most of the time, if a foreigner passes by a group of people doing tagay, they WILL hand you a glass (same glass they were drinking on), you can politely decline by making a made up yet valid reason not to drink. 😅
Just like in all parts of the world, there's good and evil. Beauty and ugly. Philippines is not perfect. You will see many imperfections and also compare it to other countries and even your own country. While it's imperfect, I wish you both see goodness and beauty in other ways you couldn't imagine. Patience is the key here and being able to adapt. Enjoy your visit, and always be careful.

no one will take offense if you asked for your own glass. its not really uncommon for people to not share a drinking glass during drinking sessions as well aso you'll be fine.
"for science!" hahaha.
"sharing the glass" depends on the group. usually exclusive to VERY close friends.
Exactly
It also includes everyone who happens to pass by.
