  • Emmy-nominated 1981 TV movie, partially based on the true story of a teenage boy who was shot by police in Texas. Jennifer Jason Leigh has some nice scenes - check out the one at 1:18:30 where she does some heavy emoting, aided by the wind blowing her hair all over her face.
This channel is a tribute to my favorite actress Jennifer Jason Leigh. If you're a fan be sure to subscribe as I will be uploading many rare videos in the weeks to come.
None of the videos on this channel are commercially available. If any become available (and I hope they do) I will remove them immediately.
All Jennifer Jason Leigh, all the time on jjlchannel & jjlchannel2.

Even after watching 'Designing women' i didn't realise what a fine actress Dixie Carter is. She is also extremely beautiful in an understated way; Good movie. Thank you for the upload.

yes, Designing Women started about 8 years after this movie
Dixie Carter and Hal Holbrook were special talents.
I got to see Holbrook on stage as Mark Twain in Boston during this same time period. He was great.

I haven't seen this movie in almost 30 years. I remember HBO used to air this movie regularly back in the day and it became one of my favorite movies. This might be the first crime movie I ever saw. It was also around the time that I first saw this movie that I became a fan of Jennifer Jason Leigh. I really enjoyed some of her movies from the 80's and I thought she was one of the prettiest actresses of the 80's.

I remember this because my parents were divorcing and I was having to go from Houston to my home town due to parental rights back then. Randy was a year older than me. We later find out there were many bad cops on Houston's force back then. There were also, many bad judges protecting these cops.
Randy Webster, for whatever reason, did steal the van, joy riding in Houston. Cops spotted the stolen van and pursued it. Randy stopped the van and held his hands over his head. Cop came to driver's side, yanked Randy out of van and threw him onto the pavement, then shot him in the head at close range.
The other cop, being so loyal, laid down a "throw down" 22 pistol that came from Houston's Police Departments Property Room. Serial numbers trace it there, so the cover up began to unravel. Still, those bastards got an acquittal. It was later discovered that another "throw down" gun was used on a Louisiana boy's death.

@@alicehoward7325 Randy's killing took place in early 1977. In the course of the same year, 1978 and 1979, his father went to investigate the police coverup. Eventually, there was a trial, but no convictions. This movie (which was based on that case) first premiered in 1981.

I believe all police forces are dirty, power corrupts, absolutely. Plus, add in a crooked greedy court, and the push for cops to be Revenue collectors instead of public Servants, what other way could it be.
I do understand cops watching each other's backs. They have too. Their lives depend on it. And it comes down to the good guys vs the bad guys, and I'm not saying which is which.

I will never forget when my sister told me that Randy had been killed by the Houston police department early this morning. I believe the reason Randy stole the van was because his older brother was a car thief and I guess Randy thought he could also steal a vehicle. After hitting Randy with the May's fire arm, Randy fell to the ground and then Mays shot through his hand and into his head. Randy was executed. It was a horrible coverup.

I first became a fan of Jennifer Jason Leigh in the 80s where she gave outstanding performances in films that were often not that great themselves. Her films improved in the 90s but I am nostalgic for the offbeat sleepers she did in the 80s. So good to see her coming back into the limelight with 6 new films this year.

I'm not a big movie cryer.. and I had forgotten bawling in a puddle at Leigh's performance (the tree scene) during the first time I saw this film (30+ years ago). I just watched it again here.. and guess what? It got me again! Another puddle. And while that was happening I remembered the first time. It's funny how after so many awesome performances we see actors cover in their career, it is sometimes isolated instances of their earliest work that retain the most impact. That is clearly the case for me here with Jenifer Jason Leigh. Oh, and I just today researched her and learned that she is the daughter of late actor Vic Morrow. Another thing I noticed on her Wiki page is the absence of this film in her filmography list.

Well, Randy was white, so it doesn't matter. But..........
I'm not a Defund the Police person, that's about as stupid as I've ever heard. Can you imagine what it would be like without Police today? We need prosecution for crimes, not probation, fir repeat offenders. And, we need honest Prosecution of police when they intentionally kill or harm citizens, not fit doing their job, or for a mistake made in . 036 seconds, that is understandable. Not based on skin, but on facts, truth, for All skin. Today, criminals with long records, in the commission of a crime, and resisting, is not a victim, or a dang hero! If they hadn't been doing what they were doing, it wouldn't have happened. Just like the famous BS we've seen in past years. Even this case. If Randy had not stole that van, this tragedy would not of happened. No, Randy did not deserve to be killed, and those cops deserved prison, but it all happened because Randy made a very bad decision.

No manslaughter conviction? That's the least they should have gotten. My brother was shot and killed by the police in Miami, Florida in 1974. I was only 14 at the time and he was a really bad person (my brother). However, I often wonder if it was justified? My parents did not have the resources available to actually question what happened (we lived in the state of Mississippi), they just accepted that the police department was sincere in what they told them. I think there are many Randy's that lost their lives to corruption!

what a painful situation for the parents.
in England police don't carry guns - - a whole different law enforcement culture, I suppose...
If we didn't allow free rein to kill people, and if we did not issue weapons, we would get different type of person applying for those jobs.

I'm not sure what happened in Houston, but I do know how Webster lived his life in Shreveport. The movie portrayed him as a good-at-heart, troubled kid. There are troubled kids and then there was Webster. If you live his type of life, you're far more likely to run across someone who will take it.

Terry Murphy I really don't know, I just don't know what happened in Houston that night. I do know however that when word hit home that Webster had been killed by HPD people were not very surprised. And then when the movie came out painting Webster simply as a trouble kid most folks thought, Wow, this is not an accurate depiction. If you look for trouble, more often than not, you find it.

    • @kckcmctcrc
      @kckcmctcrc 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Shonte, You're reading bias into my post. I'll restate, I don't know what happened, I don't know whether or not he deserved to die. The movie portrayed him as a troubled kid. He was far more than this. Occasionally the cops are justified in killing someone....again, I don't know whether or not this was the case in this situation. Knowing Randy's background i'll give the benefit of doubt to the cops. I didn't state or even implied that cops are innocent and mean no harm.

010..I think the majority of folks would disagree with your thoughts on how Randy was portrayed in the film. “Good at heart’ may be a little soft but I still firmly believe/know his portrayal was softer than real life.

Mays hit Randy in the back of the head with his service pistol, then fired one shot through his hand into his head, thus executing Randy. I believe Randy got the idea as a result of his older brother being a car thief. It is a horrible true story of a cover up using a throw down gun. Justice that day was unavailable for Randy. Randy would never have a chance to go to court. After being set up by police, this happened and it was a real wake up call with regards to the legal system in the US.

In the first 36:01 minutes of this movie, I know that I do not know all of the details yet, but that Randy was acting WAY too wild and he needed a father like Hal Holbrook's character. I think that the mother was very soft on Randy and that boy was acting like he was on something. I mean, how would he had made it in the Navy if he couldn't make it at school? Even his friends appeared as though he was out of his head. He was acting like a lunatic and phony with his father and didn't seem that he was together. I don't know what I am going to find out here, but if the real Randy Webster did indeed act this was, he wasn't a "good" kid and he was bound to die soon at the rate he was going.

    • @mperry1329

Part 2 of my statement. It is unfortunate for the parents to have to go through this , but that Randy placed himself into this mess in the first place stealing the van and riding like a maniac through the streets like this. You can't win with the cops, they stick together and the forces that rule them stick by them. You can't mess with the police no matter how wrong they are. Sure, it is right to fight for your rights and we should, but we should just, as much as it is possible with us to stay out of anything involving the police. Yes, there are situations where we are completely innocent and the police come into our lives and get away with the wrong that they do, but for the most part, stay away from the police, except, to call them for your need of help. Follow the laws as prescribed as much as at all possible. This situation was a mess for himself and the family and the South is just a no good place to get into trouble. They always have been.

Sean Penn was sure young there. I think the Police on the whole are good. But you do have bad apples in some of them and these type of things happen. I remember the cop shooting that black man in the back 6 times as he was told to run. Someone filmed it. How awful. THIS CASE in the Movie.. that really is bad.. probation?? after they killed someone and try to cover it up. terrible.

Randy wasn't going to make it in the Navy any way. Look at how he already was. He didn't care about anyone's authority. Yes, it was wrong what the police did, but this Randy placed himself in a situation where this didn't have to happen at all. Never mess with the police if you don't have to.

People on here act like Randy was this model kid, he was a troubled kid who was out of control. His own family couldn't control him. The cops were wrong for what they did also. A kid staying away from home for two days and stealing cars is asking for trouble. He not only stole the van he completely destroyed the owners window by driving the car through it. It was either drugs or just craziness on his part, but instead of them arresting him, they killed him. We don't know what really happened because none of us were there at that time. Maybe the police thought he had a gun or maybe they didn't. But i say, with Randy's reckless behavior, he was going to see a tragic end one way or another.. Maybe the police planted a gun to save themselves after a wronged shooting or not. He was headed in the wrong direction, his own father saw it coming himself.

Three main things sum up this kind of situations that are still occuring, and not only with Afro Americans as victims
    1) "3 on 3000"...
    2) For every non armed civilian arrested, how many ARE, in guncrazy America, resulting in cops with dead colleagues and hence nerves on the edge ?
    3) Rotten apples have to go, and preferably not the soft way. No room for displaced "loyalty" towards violent or sadistic colleagues, who are no mythical figures, but real life characters. They are a disgrace for the badge they wear.
Always nice to see Hal Holbrook, fine job too from Randy's girlfriend, she captured that teenager's temper and moods very well.

I believe that it is very possible for the first shot to have been an accident. Yet, accident is a word that´s not acceptable for many in authority. That the city was found liable makes much more sense, than accusing officers that even know a term for a cover-up. And they payed for it. Very often it´s the system that needs a change and not single persons that need to be punished.
