My dad was at Normandy, he was 17. He was captured and was kept at a pow camp in Berne. Same camp Kurt Vonegut Jr was in for a bit. Dad was listed as MIA. It took a year for him to be liberated after the war ended. He never breathed a word. Mom told me when I was grown. Never saw his medals but he got a bunch. I did wonder how did a country boy from Alabama who quit school in the 7th grade know German? If Dad got mad enough he would let the german rip. Guess I know where he learned it.
I remember this Movie so well...... In my Family, this was how my parents lived as my Dad was in WWII ...... he came home to us. Thank goodness. However, we spent most of my life, living with my grandparents, because the strain of the War, took so much from my Dad's fragile body, he passed away less than 15 years after " The Big War " .....leaving my Mother a Widow at 32 years of age. With 4 children to raise, so was the most Remarkable Woman & Nursing Professor, in this World. She's with Dad now.... her only true love. We wish them Happy Christmas, together in Heaven ... Wonderful movie and acting! My father was in WWII flew in the B-24, I was an infant. But loved the 40's ... wholesome people, wonderful years. So different from today.
My dad was a gunner on B-24 in WWII. Oh those precious days when my mom and dad were here. I miss them. Well I'll get my tears through early this Thanksgiving.
I was 19 and watching with my neighbor and mother when they filmed it. It was wonderful to meet Hal Holbrook and Eva Marie Saint. The town was decked out like the 1940s. It was amazing! Cherished memories I'll never forget!
I love this movie! It so captures the heart of what was going on during the war. So typical this family. It was a time of great loss but also great love and patriotism. Our country was unified. Thank you for posting it.

I could write a whole book with all of my comments, about this movie. They’re were happy times and even the sad times were good. The parents remembering about when the boys were younger. Bittersweet memories. My mother worked at the Consolidated airplane building plant. That’s where she met and married my daddy.

And the producers got so many details about Christmastime 1944 right, even including President Roosevelt's Christmas Eve 1944 radio message. It was issued on videotape but has never been on DVD, and I can't understand why - possibly because another movie titled "I'll Be Home for Christmas" was later released? Thanks again!

My dear mother-in-law spoke of her brother killed in the war w/Japan while in New Guinea and how their mother never got over the death of her youngest son, 4th child. The army changed it's rules after his death and his entire unit as back then if they found a speck of dirt in your rifle or some minor infraction they disallowed family from seeing off their sons so they never got to say goodbye when he was shipped out with his unit. My husband's grandmother never forgave the United States and while she "lived" on to see my husband born and her future great grandchildren she never recovered from the loss of her baby. It pains me to see evil like Soros and the far left w/media support destroying USA when past generations of men sacrificed their lives for freedom in America. My we never forget WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, etc. etc. and may God protect USA against those who wish to destroy her.
I didn’t like the way Isaiah, the western Union man, was overlooked. I know they was seen as bearers of “bad news”, and unwelcome visitors. I only know, that I would have welcomed him in, after midnight service. Reality is often too harsh. I pray all the sons/daughters; husbands/wives, and mothers/fathers, come home safe and sound. Can you believe a president, today, giving a speech and acknowledging Jesus our Christ, let alone a Christmas speech? We need Christ now, more than ever. God bless all my brothers and sisters in Christ, this Christmas season and throughout the new year.
Yeah! Took a step back when I saw Courtney in the beginning... So we see here that had she not been a permanent character in Friends we’d have seen a wonderful movie actress on the rise! She was exceptionally good in this movie!
