What you have to understand is that just because the drone lost connection to the phone doesn't mean it lost connection to the controller. Often times when I'm flying my Phantom 3 standard, I can still see the drone when the live feed cuts out, and it doesn't just start returning to home, it stays where it's at and will even still respond to control inputs. Great video, Carson. I can't even get past 2,500 feet with the ARGtek antennae upgrade. I live in a windy area in North Stockton, California with a lot of electronic interference too. I agree with you about the DJI GO App and the latest firmware update. The App fixed the connection link to my LG smartphone for the first time. However, in mid-flight it disconnected and went into the Registration Mode. LOL. Cheers.

you got some stones, bro. very nice test. I do not currently have faith in my P3S to go out this far because of this disconnection issue you talk about and my lack of faith in the ability of return to home to initiate without a connection. Plus, like you mention in the first part of the video, it is against current FAA regulations to lose visual contact with the drone.

I think you have to set the setting in the app that when it lose signal, it have initiate RTH. Go check that. I think there are 3 choice to choose: RTH, landing and hover.
Return to home (RTH) only is when you loze controller contact so if the controller lost all contact. In your case it did not lose all contact you was on the edge of video loss not complete loss. You still had stick controls most people think they loze it at video loss and that is not the case your DJI phantom runs on 2 different signals one for video and one for Controls once you lose all. Both controls then your drone will do a RTH.

The P3S is a great drone for what it is however I can only get a max range of 2616@325ft high/ 2573@ 165ft high. No where near your distance, I took it back and just ordered the Phantom 3 SE yesterday, hopefully I get the added range that the SE is listed at!
Carson, Do you have a video out that in dept explains what every item on the DJI go app for Iphone on Phantom three Standard does? That is the most important part of flying a drone and when you reach my age things don't sink in all that fast. I like you videos and have a bunch of them. The big antenna is for wifi connection for phone, there are two internal ceramic antennas inside to connect to the aircraft, no need to change the big one's position to the drone, angle doesn't matter, angle of the whole remote matters.

I was wondering the same thing! Maybe that was a very big help, cause it's blocking interference from behind, and maybe helping boost the forward signal, kinda like the reflector things you can get for the antenna

OK thanks. I think my camera came mess up from Dji. And I didn't realize it. I had over a year the warranty probably expired by now. Saving up for a p4 pro.
Oh yeah, most definitely. Try to get out into a large open field or patch of land where there are minimal trees and you'll find that your distance gets to a lot further.
Even though you mentioned it, the broadside of your antenna was angled downward. It definitely needs to be angled upward. Also elevation is everything when it comes to distance. 300 to 350 feet elevation would've took you out further.
I wanna ask you a question and hope that you will answer me if the drone hovered 2,004 meters and 2 kilometers as you said in the video how it would it return back home and you don’t have any connection between the drone and the controller. it return alone ? or you press on a button ot mode to get it back ??
Yes, the drone returns home by itself whenever signal between the controller and drone is lost or low. No need for pilots input in that situation. You CAN trigger it as a pilot though to return home.

That some serious distance with the standard antenna! Also, very unusual that yours didnt automatically come home. Mine starts coming home immediately when there's any loss of signal.
I honestly just got the phantom 3 standard. its 2020. its amazing you got that far out with the standard controller with no upgrades! I got the $7 parabolic antenna upgrade so now I'm wondering how far I can go. I'm not gonna try it cause I'm scared as hell.

watching this in 2019 because ..youtube at 1am. but i wanna comment on its amazing how far we have come in drone tech in literally no time at all. the "enhanced wifi" of the mavic air is effectively beating the Lightbridge of the Phantom 3 series. not even mentioning Occusync 2.0 on new mavics! my friend has Inspire 2 and standard controller for it, that uses i think small lightbridge tech Phantom 4 pro uses. and he was curious if my mavic air could keep up, wirelessly with that system... sure enough wifi was first to dip but it came back strong only dipped for a second.. 4500 feet then over some trees into another field, and funny, lightbridge lost signal and was chopping chunky and unsable 1000 feet beyond that. my mavic air was lagging but it was still "usable" i still had a valid image was corrupted like it is with his. i was on 5.8ghz he was on 2.4ghz came back then swapped channels.. and repeated the test. 2.4Ghz suckson mavic air... mavic air was struggling past 4500 feet and barely made it to the tree line, the spire made it over the treeline the instantly lost signal to unusable degree. then i pulled out my mavic 2 pro and i was able to get it little over 3.5 miles before battery warning for RTH with no signal drop, crossed so many fields even past a cell tower which knocks out wifi of mavic air and messes with lightbridge..
Hi, Carson. Just a thought: When your smartphone lost its connection - no video feed, etc. and you tried to reconnect it, did you notice if your smartphone is then connected to your home wifi? Maybe when it lost connection, your phone automatically reconnected with your home wifi which is commonly set to auto-connect. I'm going to try this with my P3 to see if I can reproduce the problem. cool video, that's pretty far for stock. I got mine out to 10,000+ feet and had plenty of signal to go further but battery limited me. I did it all with an arizona tea can
I live in Florida and I can't get over 22-2300 feet no matter what I do. It is very flat here as well I can't understand how you guys get these crazy distances with the P3 Standard. I got almost 3000 feet When I put a simple wire mesh dish behind the factory antenna. but I stopped doing that because I was afraid I would lose my drone.Oh yeah BTW. Once mine went nuts . As soon as I took off.It started a life of it's own. Fortunately after turning off and on the rc unit and pushing and toggling everything on it in I finally got it to start returning home. This was messed up as well. Fortunately I caught sight of where it was hovering and fortunately it decided to land about 500 feet on a concrete parking lot. Very lucky and unlucky that day.
most I've gotten mine is at 4,200 feet .... wooded areas it won't travel far !! just ordered argtek antena .... hopefully it will get it to 5,000 feet !!!

As I am total novice to drone topic I 'd like to ask if recording is on from the moment you take it off/start a drone and you have no influence on it , or you can switch recording on/off while flying?
First, what version of app and AC firmware?My experience with my P3A when it comes to fail-safe RTH is that you can lose video and telemetry (signals from AC to RC) but still have a signal from RC to AC. When you thought you lost connection and don't get anything back by 30 seconds, try sending RTH. After all, what do you have to lose? I waited 4 minutes for fail-safe RTH where later I analyzed flight logs on both tablet and DAT file on AC. Tablet flight log confirmed signal loss but DAT said I never lost control. Turning off RC of course will cause AC to lose RC signal thus trigger fail-safe RTH for sure.Turning off RC should never cause a flyaway.There was an issue with Go 3.1.2 on Android that placed the RC (tablet really) position about 2 miles WNW of actual position. That was rectified with 3.1.3
The laggy-ness may be from interference around you or when using an older device. Try moving into a more open environment and your problem may be solved
hi Carson.....after a crush and repair my phantom 3 standard gimbal wont stop vibrating any time i start the drone. any idea what the probelm might be. could it be with the IC vtp22pm on the board??

Good recommendation about the FAA regulations... unfortunately smaller drones would not be in line of sight at that distance and there are people that are doing crazy things... unfortunately that makes it bad for all those that follow strict line of sight regulations and fly unregistered craft

hi there , how come you can choose the 4 k video to see your movie ,because the drone have a maximum of 2.7 k. My phantom 3 standard never go over 300 meters ,after its lost the signal !!!????

At the end of my P3 standard's life it had like no range. can't really blame it its been through 3 years and a few crashes. It eventually just fell out of the sky and almost hit someones car. But i might buy a mavic mini soon.

I'm new to drones, and am trying to figure out what I need to do to be permitted to fly beyond VLOS. Is a 107 cert enough? Do you have to file for approval to do a long distance test like this? How can I do long-distance tests too? Does VLOS mean you just need a clear path from you to the drone? Or that you have to be able to actually see it?
Hi Simon! I personally have never flown the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced but from my knowledge, it is nearly the same functionality wise other than the fact that it has a longer flying distance. Along with that, it has GLONAS GPS which results in a better location positioning. Lastly, it has the vision positioning but honestly I have never really seen a need for that unless you are planning on flying your drone inside often (which I never do). If you want to get a good bang for your buck then I would definitely go for the DJI Phantom 3 Standard. However, if you are willing to pay a little bit more money, I would personally get the DJI Phantom 3 Professional either brand new or refurbished for a cheaper price. I hope this helps if you are planning on purchasing!
Oh no this scares me to fly my drone far, I'm gonna worry about the distance now, seeing how it just stayed in one spot is very discomforting. Unless it was just your area where you were controlling it.
I'm pretty sure you're using an iPhone/iPod when getting that error. IT'S COMPLETELY OKAY! That happens only because Apple has settings configured where if there is actually no internet throughput, then it says "no internet connection" opposed to "no wifi connection." Hope this helps!
How on earth did you fly it that far away? Without the foil booster on my antenna I can only go 1,800 feet before i get the disconnect warning and loose camera feed. With the foil booster I've gotten as far as 2,895 feet away before loosing camera feed. How are you getting 6000 + feet?

Even though you mentioned it, the broadside of your antenna was angled downward. It definitely needs to be angled upward. Also elevation is everything when it comes to distance. 300 to 350 feet elevation would've took you out further.

if the drone hovered 2,004 meters and 2 kilometers as you said in the video how it would it return back home and you don’t have any connection between the drone and the controller. it return alone ? or you press on a button ot mode to get it back ??
Yes, the drone returns home by itself whenever signal between the controller and drone is lost or low. No need for pilots input in that situation. You CAN trigger it as a pilot though to return home.

yeah it sucks to wait for it to return home. dude you live in the perfect place to fly it. In the city sucks. I cannot fly it without disconnecting everywhere I go

That some serious distance with the standard antenna! Also, very unusual that yours didnt automatically come home. Mine starts coming home immediately when there's any loss of signal.
I honestly just got the phantom 3 standard. its 2020. its amazing you got that far out with the standard controller with no upgrades! I got the $7 parabolic antenna upgrade so now I'm wondering how far I can go. I'm not gonna try it cause I'm scared as hell.

watching this in 2019 because ..youtube at 1am. but i wanna comment on its amazing how far we have come in drone tech in literally no time at all. the "enhanced wifi" of the mavic air is effectively beating the Lightbridge of the Phantom 3 series. not even mentioning Occusync 2.0 on new mavics!
my friend has Inspire 2 and standard controller for it, that uses i think small lightbridge tech Phantom 4 pro uses. and he was curious if my mavic air could keep up, wirelessly with that system... sure enough wifi was first to dip but it came back strong only dipped for a second.. 4500 feet then over some trees into another field, and funny, lightbridge lost signal and was chopping chunky and unsable 1000 feet beyond that. my mavic air was lagging but it was still "usable" i still had a valid image was corrupted like it is with his. i was on 5.8ghz he was on 2.4ghz came back then swapped channels.. and repeated the test. 2.4Ghz suckson mavic air... mavic air was struggling past 4500 feet and barely made it to the tree line, the spire made it over the treeline the instantly lost signal to unusable degree. then i pulled out my mavic 2 pro and i was able to get it little over 3.5 miles before battery warning for RTH with no signal drop, crossed so many fields even past a cell tower which knocks out wifi of mavic air and messes with lightbridge..
Hi, Carson. Just a thought: When your smartphone lost its connection - no video feed, etc. and you tried to reconnect it, did you notice if your smartphone is then connected to your home wifi? Maybe when it lost connection, your phone automatically reconnected with your home wifi which is commonly set to auto-connect. I'm going to try this with my P3 to see if I can reproduce the problem. cool video, that's pretty far for stock. I got mine out to 10,000+ feet and had plenty of signal to go further but battery limited me. I did it all with an arizona tea can

I live in Florida and I can't get over 22-2300 feet no matter what I do. It is very flat here as well I can't understand how you guys get these crazy distances with the P3 Standard. I got almost 3000 feet When I put a simple wire mesh dish behind the factory antenna. but I stopped doing that because I was afraid I would lose my drone.Oh yeah BTW. Once mine went nuts . As soon as I took off.It started a life of it's own. Fortunately after turning off and on the rc unit and pushing and toggling everything on it in I finally got it to start returning home. This was messed up as well. Fortunately I caught sight of where it was hovering and fortunately it decided to land about 500 feet on a concrete parking lot. Very lucky and unlucky that day.
most I've gotten mine is at 4,200 feet .... wooded areas it won't travel far !! just ordered argtek antena .... hopefully it will get it to 5,000 feet !!!

First, what version of app and AC firmware?My experience with my P3A when it comes to fail-safe RTH is that you can lose video and telemetry (signals from AC to RC) but still have a signal from RC to AC. When you thought you lost connection and don't get anything back by 30 seconds, try sending RTH. After all, what do you have to lose? I waited 4 minutes for fail-safe RTH where later I analyzed flight logs on both tablet and DAT file on AC. Tablet flight log confirmed signal loss but DAT said I never lost control. Turning off RC of course will cause AC to lose RC signal thus trigger fail-safe RTH for sure.Turning off RC should never cause a flyaway.There was an issue with Go 3.1.2 on Android that placed the RC (tablet really) position about 2 miles WNW of actual position. That was rectified with 3.1.3

The laggy-ness may be from interference around you or when using an older device. Try moving into a more open environment and your problem may be solved

hi Carson.....after a crush and repair my phantom 3 standard gimbal wont stop vibrating any time i start the drone. any idea what the probelm might be. could it be with the IC vtp22pm on the board??
Hmm I'm not sure but if I were to guess maybe one or a couple of the motors got moved and that possibly caused the motors to be unbalanced.

Good recommendation about the FAA regulations... unfortunately smaller drones would not be in line of sight at that distance and there are people that are doing crazy things... unfortunately that makes it bad for all those that follow strict line of sight regulations and fly unregistered craft

how come you can choose the 4 k video to see your movie ,because the drone have a maximum of 2.7 k. My phantom 3 standard never go over 300 meters ,after its lost the signal !!!????

At the end of my P3 standard's life it had like no range. can't really blame it its been through 3 years and a few crashes. It eventually just fell out of the sky and almost hit someones car. But i might buy a mavic mini soon.

I'm new to drones, and am trying to figure out what I need to do to be permitted to fly beyond VLOS. Is a 107 cert enough? Do you have to file for approval to do a long distance test like this? How can I do long-distance tests too?
Does VLOS mean you just need a clear path from you to the drone? Or that you have to be able to actually see it?
Took mine out today started getting drop out and signal loss at 300 m but I was in a more built up area then you .
i fly mine in a suburban area and can't get past like 350 m

Hi Simon! I personally have never flown the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced but from my knowledge, it is nearly the same functionality wise other than the fact that it has a longer flying distance. Along with that, it has GLONAS GPS which results in a better location positioning. Lastly, it has the vision positioning but honestly I have never really seen a need for that unless you are planning on flying your drone inside often (which I never do). If you want to get a good bang for your buck then I would definitely go for the DJI Phantom 3 Standard. However, if you are willing to pay a little bit more money, I would personally get the DJI Phantom 3 Professional either brand new or refurbished for a cheaper price. I hope this helps if you are planning on purchasing!

I'm pretty sure you're using an iPhone/iPod when getting that error. IT'S COMPLETELY OKAY! That happens only because Apple has settings configured where if there is actually no internet throughput, then it says "no internet connection" opposed to "no wifi connection." Hope this helps!

How on earth did you fly it that far away? Without the foil booster on my antenna I can only go 1,800 feet before i get the disconnect warning and loose camera feed. With the foil booster I've gotten as far as 2,895 feet away before loosing camera feed. How are you getting 6000 + feet?
