Cinestill 800T is killer. I've got another roll to shoot before sending it in for development.
I've been considering Dehancer, but haven't pulled the plug. However, shooting stills on film, and then matching video with Dehancer is a sick idea. Really stoked on your results.

Appreciate it! I thought it was an original take on a video I’ve seen done so much before. Couldn’t find any Portra to test in time! That’d be a next test

Using cinestill as a look is kind of counterintuitive because it was motion picture film stock with the back layer removed so that it could go through C41 processing and as a result exhibits heavy red halation, and it also has a heavy green cast. Great for stylistic photography, but then reversing course and emulating it back to motion is silly to me because it’s less pleasing than motion picture film stock and was never destined for motion. I get that people just want the look and my subjective opinion holds little weight, but my point still makes sense. You’re taking a stock that made sacrifices for stills, and then taking it back without restoring it to something more pleasing and balanced.

I get ya, but some people just like the look and don't care about the process. Sometimes, I'm one of them. Goes back and forth. Film isn't around as much, especially at lower budgets. Doesn't mean people don't fall in love with the look more than the process, and want a way to emulate it.

I don’t suppose you’d be willing to share the R3D frames and 35mm stills from this video? You’ve done excellent work with this comparison. Having side by side like this would be a great exercise for color grading.

I'd rather not, wasn't shooting this with the expectation to share anything more than final results so I don't want to have in-between moments and wildly wrong white balance footage out there 😅

I’ve got a powergrade that emulates vision color 3 500T 5219 and it blows Dehancer out of the water. Only downside is they only developed the tungsten stock for now.

Your choice to refrain from matching the real film grain actually reduced the success of matching the film stock. Color is not enough.

have no idea how I'd do that, so do let me know how you yourself would go about that.

@@georgemichaelofficial Dehancer replaces the existing video with grain, quite different than other grain effects that simply layer grain over the top in a uniform, blanket appearance. If you examine a true film frame carefully, you will see grain showing up mostly in skin tones, whites and blacks. Dehancer does better with this effect than just Davinci alone.
