      You got that right! I've reviewed many planes that are hovering around $100, and they all have some shortcomings, but this plane is good for the price. I'd love to see a few features...brushless, DSXM, Ailerons, SAFE....but then it would be a Sport Cub S UMX ... :)

      I can't say that I was thrilled about lack of ailerons, BUT it does fly well, and to be TOTALLY honest, ailerons would have made this plane fly heavier, and the dihedral more or less keeps things upright on it's own.

    I've only been into the RC hobby for a few years but have replaced 4 ground and 3 airplane brushed motors. I'd pay some extra bucks for this plane if it were brushless but I'm through with brushed motors and for that reason have to give this plane a pass.
    Great video. 👍👍

    I would love to see you review the Extra 300. That 3D plane seems very awesome. Also The Eflite Havoc you should also review because it just seems so sick. They're both planes I am very interested in, plus the evolution conscendo but you did that one and I'm sold on it lol. Your opinion on these planes and how you go through every detail, it's s just amazing that someone like you exists on youtube!. You're videos go me into the hobby and are also digging me deeper lol. Best RC Plane reviews hands down.

      I'm so happy to hear that our reviews are helping you make informed and successful pics!
      As for the Extra 300 and Havoc.... Havoc maybe, but the Extra 300 - probably not. Everyone has a "style" and while I HAVE reviewed some 3D planes, 3D flying is not my first choice. I hope you understand, but don't me to be dismissive of your highly complimentary suggestion. I almost never say NO to horizon or another RC company that wants me to review an item, BUT they don't just send me anything I want to review, FYI ;)

      This plane would not be the easiest for learning to fly, but it is one of the more durable choices. The Sport Cub S UMX would be a better choice to learn to fly, in my opinion.

    Brian would you do a video in the future about storing lipo batteries safely. how you do it. and other ideas for storage, transportation etc... I'm a truck driver I bring rc stuff with me but I'm afraid of one cooking off while I'm driving and burning my truck.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I get your question, but here's the no-BS answer you've come to expect from me...
      1) Fires happen...most of the time they can be avoided.
      2) Don't keep old lipos.
      3) If it's damaged, properly dispose of it.
      4) Lipo charging bags might help ( bit.ly/35U8Etq ), BUT you might just get a 50Cal ammo Can first ( amzn.to/35SI1Fj ). The latter is heavy, and "air tight" so IF a fire happens, you'll have more time to deal with it, PRESUMABLY. This will help improve your odds of damage, but the lipo is still a lipo....
      5) Cary a Fire Extinguisher (you probably already do)
      6) Charge on a NON-Flammable surface. This is the biggest one...since the burn FAST and hot, but they but quick...most of the time.
      7) Use SMART lipos, if you want to improve your odds of not having a fire....BUT they are NOT impervious to the risks associated with Lipos, even though they will help you better manage the risk than other brands and types.
      8) Keep lipos "discharged" (at 3.80VDC per cell) if possible, as this will keep the chemistry as stable as the cells can be.
      9) If you crash, might want to replace the battery (I sure don't)...
      10) Be careful
      11) Don't charge them faster than you have to.
      12) Don't puncture, pierce, or crush lipos.
      13) Be NICE to your leads.
      14) Use the correct ends, if you want the best results.
      15) If they're puffed, don't charge them.
      16) If they're HOT, don't charge them.
      17) If they're dented, don't charge them.
      I see a horror story on Facebook or TH-cam once in a while, but you gotta remember, when the crap hits the fan, most will be slow to admit fault. It DOES happen, but you don't always know the WHOLE story...

    The first plane I flew on 4/1/20 was the Duet. I will never recommend an underpowered plane to a beginner, from my own experience. If I didn't also have the Mini Mustang P-51D with me I might have given up RC flying. With a more powerful motor the plane can be flown with a breeze and flown slow with a reduced throttle. Yes, a little more money, but a much better investment over the long run. The Duet is now just taking up space. My Sport Cub S2 now has a 2S motor and brick so I have unlimited vertical and slow flying too. So a new tractor is on order? Does that indicate another 5 hour video is coming? Haha Thanks for taking time to explain things and share your experiences, I've learned a lot from you.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      JACK - I agree with your assessment. More power is desirable, except when you have the exact amount of power that predisposes the pilot from being able to flip the plane over - LOL - this was clearly, a "happy accident", but nothing more...if the plane had SAFE & AS3X, ailerons, and brushless motor, it would be a much better plane, and it would be better flying too, but I guess since HH "follows all the rules" they incur more cost per plane than the Chinese versions (XK, WLToy, Etc...) thus the "impossible" price points...but at the end of the day, this plane is good at what it's supposed to be - durable, cheap, reasonably easy to fly. That being said, get a Sport Cub S UMX and you'll fly that in the same conditions and it will live a long, healthy life. I feel like this plane is in an EXTREMELY competitive price point, but it's piers have the upper hand, in that they can make a plane with no replacement parts (aside from a spare prop if you're lucky) and claim RTF while leaving out US AC adapters, and AA batteries, among other QC issues, which are rampant among ALL the brands (At least HH will make it right...). My gripe is that this plane could be so much more, not that it's not enough. I have similar issues with UMX planes that DON'T have Flaps stock. I would be willing to pay a few bucks extra for features, BUT since I'm in a very small category, the "market" wins. I don't want to get that deep "into the weeds" on a review of such a basic beginner plane. I trust you will understand, and appreciate my position on the matter, as you've surely seen more than just THIS review ;)

    This is a definite do not fly in any "light" wind RC. Mine crashed just like yours did. Fuselage cracked and servo makes a buzzing noise. Throttle works and rear flaps do not move after. I'm guessing replacement servo would fix this? As you said, "toy grade" probably not investing the replacement costs.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC

      You're on the right track Drone flyer...unfortunately, a bottle of glue and a servo might cost 1/2 as much as the plane, BUT if you get a bottle of glue, I promise it will be an investment ;)
      For this I'd use Mucilage or Foam2Foam. CA would work, but you'll want to stick with FOAM SAFE, just to be safe...but the CA would be the worst pick, in my opinion.

    Hello again! I found an Esky plane just like this here in China. Is it possible to hook up a Futaba T6K transmitter/reciever to a plane like this or are we held hostage and have to pay the higher price to get the company transmitter which seems to only come at an extra cost here and is kind of not really needed in my situation. I just want a smaller fun plane that is easy to store and carry to the field when I take my 1 and 1/2 year old boy with me. I am also looking at the Sparrow biplane which could be a good option with storage space here. You remind me of Jack Black when you smile as well as when you talk. I love your comentary and tips.

    That was a great bit of info about the battery being forward all the way or back, causing it to stall. It explained why my apprentice sts tends to stall when I slow it down. I'm going to try getting the battery more forward next flight.
    I have a question though about the apprentice sts.. Is it a good idea to jam a 5000mah battery in it? Lol. I have one, it barely fits. Or is it better if I went with like a 3000 or something?.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      5000mAh is pretty huge for the Apprentice. I think we were flying ours on 3300mAh or 3000mAh. If you can get it to CG out, you can fly 10,000 mah...she'd just fly like a brick ;)

      Dihedral is the "auto-leveling" on this plane; "limited bank and pitch angles" are handled by an under-powered motor ;) LOL...but I digress. This is a good plane for what it's worth. It's fun to fly. I'd like to see brushless and ailerons...SAFE or not, isn't a deal breaker to me if the plane flies well. DSMX would have been nice too, so BNF could be achievable. I guess when HH plays by all the rules, China can deliver some more features at a lower price....maybe HH should start cheating more???? ;)

      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually not. While it LOOKS like a glider, it flies more like a trainer PLANE. I fly powered gliders differently.
      Here's how I would personally describe it...
      Cheap, but of decent quality.
      Horizon Hobby Backed....IE, if you have a problem, they will help make it right to you.
      Simple and fairly durable.
      Reasonably easy to fly.
      All this considered, the Sport Cub S UMX at $140 is a better plane....but it's NOT durable. Plus that's 40% MORE!!! The $100 price point is tough to hit now a days.

    Can it bind with a spektrum radio? Can it do loops, rolls? Does it does porpoise up and down?

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, and not really ;( It does porpoise, but it could be worse. This is a very entry level plane, almost arguably "toy grade" so I don't want to make it out to be the "Cat's Meow", because it's not... the Sport Cub S UMX is 3 times the plane this is, and it's only a few bucks more, but it's a few bucks more (40% more). and it's less durable, so that's why we have this plane as a choice from Horizon Hobby.
      I don't want to disappoint HH or my audience - this plane is what it is, a toy grade, fun and fairly painless option for a novice, but it's nothing like the Sport Cub S UMX ;)

    How does it bank so much without ailerons? Sorry if you covered that and I missed it

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dihedral (wings up in stead of level). The one wing travels farther and faster, thus producing more lift, while the other go slower and produced less lift. The dihedral also helps to keep the plane level becasue each side is trying to push into the center.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ja Kim - It would still do some, but might be more flat. This also has to do with the ANGLE of the rudder. You can make planes yaw totally flat if you try hard enough, but in this case, they wanted the roll effect.

    • @BrianPhillipsRC
      @BrianPhillipsRC  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      DSMX and DSM2 (older) are the radio protocol used by Spectrum (AKA Horizon Hobby). They're both offshoots of DSM.
      Their competitive with FrSky and Futaba FHSS...
      Basically, it's the structure of the communication from the transmitter and receiver. There are some additional data connections fro TELEMETRY too.
      If you're new, think of it like a brand specific technology used to connect to a given plane that's BNF (Bind and fly).
      Back in the day people just had crystals to change the frequency of their "Channel" and then they could fly a few planes at the same place without interfearance.

  • @bendrixbailey1430

    Not for a beginner. This plane is difficult to fly. The pusher prop has behavior that is not intuitive. I found it had to be hand launched power off then throttled up slowly. Has a serious desire to dive hard when the throttle is pushed up. As one reviewer said on the Horizon site, this plane is a “dreams killer”. Give this to a beginner and they’ll never learn how to fly.

      @@BrianPhillipsRC Bought one of those also! Ha! I gotta stop watching you fly. That plane is very light. First time I flew it there was a slight wind on the ground, but stronger at 25 feet. Almost blew the plane out over the pond and away from me. I had to dive it down and fight all the way back. Done for that day. On calm days this is a fun plane to fly on SAFE. When not on safe its very pitch sensitive. I got it RTF but think I’ll bind it to my NX8 if I can and work on rates to tone it down. I feel like its sensitive in all three axis, but very sensitive in pitch. There is no way to program that little RTF radio, is there? I have two kids I’m bringing into the sport. Got them the real flight sim. I’ve decided the Carbon Cub S2 1.3 and the Apprentice 1.5 are what I’ll start them on. Those are big enough to to handle some wind, easy to track visually and with SAFE, super easy to fly.
