    Just wanted to add that I plugged in a 128 gig USB stick with over 19,000 tracks on it, and I am able to access them well into the 10,000's by the remote. It also does play random play when a USB stick is inserted. Have it plugged into my tube amp with Altec Lansing speakers and it sounds fantastic. Only thing that would make it better would be a display to show what is being played from USB, but then these are really designed for BT streaming anyway right.

    I heard it say "Music!" then what sounded like a robot giving a raspberry. Cracked me up.

      Yes I " blowed that one up real good" didn't I?

      I had to google it. That's pretty funny. I've never seen John Candy in that role before. I'll always remember him as Uncle Buck lol

    Never mind dave, we all have accidents, it's what you do afterwards that matters :-D
    That really performs well, another clever module.
    I would have put some 3k3 resistors in line with your mod wires, just to protect the main chip from minor accidents, unless they have them on the pcb :-).

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pin 4 is actually fed from the headphone jack, and that is protected already from shorts, from when the headphones are being plugged and unplugged. So the module operates exactly as it was intended, except no speaker output now, line out, and headphone out. Much better option. Sure I could have done it the easy way and used a 3.5mm plug, but I just hate those plugs. Wanted RCA plugs on it. Will throw it in the cabinet of my stereo, and use it to stream from my phone to the big speakers.

    • @zx8401ztv
      @zx8401ztv 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup i hate 3.5mm plugs too, i dont mind the 1/4 headphone jack, stronger and large tags to solder to.
      And yes phono's for stacker audio systems.
      5 pin din's are crap, they cause problems.

    Ive done this years ago its so easy it was with a bluetooth module with no line level output it had a mono amp onboard for a speaker, all i did was tap into where the bluetooth cpu sent the analogue audio in stereo to a resistor network which creates a mono signal for the onboard amplifier and bingo, i got stereo line out

    Modern audio output ICs should be short protected, expecially for just 2*3W.I would not use this module in any installation. If a speaker fails or someone messes with the speaker wire the module will blow and cause alot of extra trouble. Great video, btw!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only reason it blew was because the 2 negative leads were shorted. If the neg and positive on the same amp were shorted, then it probably would not have caused any issue. Just use the 3.5mm plug, that is a headphone level output that will interface nicely to an amp, or do what I did, remove the power amp IC and tack down the output cable to pin 4 or the IC. Will never give a problem now.

      Does it have/need a coupling capacitor for that mod?

    That will connect via Blue Tooth with an ACER ASPIRE TC-220 Tower PC as it has Blue Tooth access which would make drag and drop a possibility between the Blue Tooth and ACER ASPIRE TC-220, why not take the board that plugs onto the neck of a color CRT and and use that as there are three wideband Class A amps on the board you know one for each gun you should have such a board floating around the workshop somewhere and that could be used and should work well of 13.8v

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why stop there, a class A tube amp is the ticket, and I have 2 such amps at my disposal.

  • @FindLiberty
    @FindLiberty 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the solution (bypass amp ICs)! Am I actually hearing a lot of harmonic distortion coming from ALL of those digital technology amplifiers? (it usually affects high piano notes / simple cords that reveal unwanted additional harmonic tones.)
    Seems like the typical >1% harmonic distortion specification associated with digital audio power amps is about four times too high; it's a warning for people with sensitive ears.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I plugged it into my class A full tube amp in my office, and the sound difference is amazing. It really smooths out that odd order harmonic distortion, and turns it into enen order harmonics which sound very nice.

    • @FindLiberty
      @FindLiberty 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that info; yea, even harmonics are much nicer. You're using that clean, LINE level pre-amp output, not a digital power amp SPEAKER level output that can never be cleaned up to lower the 1% distortion that I'm hearing from (all?) the Class-D amplifiers.

    Great video, I was wondering if you moved (or will move) the grounds back to the left and right channels, or leave them piggy backed on the headphone ground? Does it matter?
    Fun stuff, great to watch...thanks.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the grounds will stay on the comon ground now. The speaker ground terminals were not rounded, They ent to the negative speaker pin on the amplifier IC which is no longer on the board as now it is strictly a line level output, which is what I thought it was when I ordered it.

    I think these days its more common to use 3.5mm aux jacks to connect between audio devices, at least that's what people around me tend to do. But they could of at least labeled it as "spkr" left and right on the board.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The headphone jack is actually still live in this. The signal goes to the jack first, and then to pin 4. If I plug in headphones, the sound cuts out.
      So I could have simply plugged in a 3.5 cord to connect, which is what most people will do. I just didn't have one. I could have used the adapter, and plugged it into my bench amp. Again this was not labeled speaker output.
      When I edited I could have cut this part out, and just used the 3.5, but I felt it was important to show that this output is BTL, and connecting it to other equipment will make it go pop. Since I would never use it directly with speakers myself.this is a non issue unless I decide to build it into those other little speakers that I built, but they have their own amp anyway.
      Hey for 4.00 this is a great little board, and performance wise it really does well, especially the range.

    Wouldn't it have been simpler to use a male to male 3.5mm cable from the headphone output to the input of the TDA7297?

  • @ryantoomey611
    @ryantoomey611 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why does connecting the grounds together cause it to burn out?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The amplifier chips are BTL (Bridge Tied Load) so the gounds are not really grounds, They are the negative output which is a just a phase inverted output of the signal. This is how they gain more power. Naturally since they are not ground, putting them together is going to blow something.
      Had no documentation so I didn't know. I got this module for free to test out. It is a great little module and I use it all the time to send audio from my phone into a TU8200 tube amplifier I built last year.

      Ha ha I wish. Actually I think it is pretty funny myself.
      I believe that is probably hard coded into the chip.

    Mr 12volt. First of all you are the guru. Ha. I have been watching a lot of your tutorials. And I am now in a place of requiring some advice. I want to succeed in repairing a ATX switching power supply. Am yet to win. I have replaced all the bulged and even the ones not showing problem, caps next to the output yet I still get the problem of it spinning the fan for about 0.2 of a second. I thought it might be the little coupler that switches the transformer on/off but it seems fine. I am unsure where to look next. Any chance you could help? Its not so much about the power-supply itself I just would like to beat it.

      @PileOfEmptyTapes 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say +12V is coming up but you've got a short somewhere, so OCP trips and shuts down the supply. Maybe the DC/DC for some of the other voltages is b0rked if it's that kind of architecture. Probe around for a bit.

    • @BoydSofield
      @BoydSofield 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. That is what I thought. Ok thanks for that I will check out the other components for a short. This ATX is a very busy unit I should probably have started with a unit less complicated. The pcb is very full compared to others I have seen.

      No, but if it is like the old walkman type facks, either the contacts in the jack are worn / dirty or it is come unsoldered on the board from stress of plugging and unplugging.

    Love your electronics videos. Have learned so much. Thank you.
    How did you get your education in electronics?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      School of hard knocks.
      I learned back in the late 70's early 80's working for a guy that was a former radio engineer from the military. There wasn't anything this guy didn't know about radio, TV, radar ect. I worked for him while still in high school, and then worked for the Sony corp for about a year before going to work for a shop that I would end of staying at for 20 years. Over the years I went to countless training seminars put on by the various manufactures. I only studied design while I was still in high school, did not take electronics in college because this was the last thing I wanted to do. My formal education is actually video production! I sort of fell into this line of work because after video school I found it was much harder to make a living shooting corporate videos, weddings, music videos and tv commercials than I ever imagined. So much competition, so electronics was my plan B to put food on the table, and video production became my secondary source of income. Turns out that 35 years later video production is still my secondary source of income,but now instead of clients handing me checks for corporate videos or couples handing me cash for wedding videos, google cuts me one every month for the youtube videos! I now work for a major telecom during the day,

    Why didn't you just run a straight 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't get documentation with it, and when I looked up the board it was shown as having a 3.5 aux in jack. As it turns out, it is actually a 3.5 headphone level. Otherwise I would have done that. Anyway this shows how to disable the internal BTL audio amps and turn it into a great sounding line level output.

    BTL = Bridge-tied load.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      BTL started it's life in the analog world, in car radio power boosters.
      Some units, like one that AUdiovox sold used an output transformer. Others used BTL, which on the literature said it was a "Balanced TransformerLess output. They used 2 10 watt amplifier chips, and simply inverted the input to one of them. One drove the + lead to the speaker, and the other the negative.
      Regardless of the terminology the speakers wires are a balanced output, and thus you can not use a common ground, and if you do there will be much magic smoke. Used to see so many kids bring in ther "power boosters" that the shop I worked at refused to work on any car audio because so many came in blow up. Fix it, send it on it's way and the dufas would short the outputs again and poof, blown again.
