@MCDM - Yes a smuggler's knot is a real thing in a couple different ways... First is the thief knot, which closely resembles the reef knot (and was used in several naval smuggling runs). Second is the highwayman's hitch knot, which was used by Norwegian booze smugglers in the 1920s (and as such in Norway instead of it being called the highwayman's hitch, it's the smuggler's hitch)
I learned in boy scouts that a thief's knot is a square knot but the running and standing ends are reversed on one rope. This knot was tied over cargo because practically everyone knew how to tie a square knot, which looks identical, but if a thief got into your cargo, they probably wouldn't know the thief's knot. If your cargo was still tied with a thief's knot it was probably not stolen from.

To comment on which is more fun, I like your stream of Codenames specifically because you do both blind games and open games. It's fun to be on both sides of the table, and this is the only stream I know of that does it.
