Hekate and The Great Mother Goddess

  • To see the Mother as she is, in her darkness and light. That is the image of Hekate as The Great Mother Goddess. To know her warm embrace and her firm corrections when we veer from the path. To give us, as John Bowlby, wrote “a secure base from which to explore the world. ”
For those of us who were denied this foundational sense of security, the journey can be untethered, as we wonder from one dysfunctional situation to another. The inherent problem, which Bowlby also describes, was that “what one cannot tell to the (m)other, one cannot tell to oneself.”
Many who are called by Hekate are those with the darkest wounds. She comes as The Great Mother whose illuminating fire burns away the past, yet whose darkness is so vast that she can consume all our pain, wounds, and failures. She readily accepts the parts of ourselves that we’ve shoved so deep into our corners that we can almost pretend they don’t exist. Almost. Her loving words are keys of affirmation, “you are my temple, your life honors me.” Her torch shines with the empathy of The Wise Mother, healing us from both having experienced, and being, The Wounded Mother.
Stretching back across the centuries, we see that others venerated Hekate as The Great Mother. In the earliest reports, such as Hesiod’s Theogony, Hekate is portrayed as all powerful. This distinguishes The Great Mother from earth goddesses, which can be called “Elemental Mothers”, and The Great Mother who is source, soul, and cosmic. She is not Gaia, for example. The Great Mother, to the ancients, was life and death, blessing and bane. Nor is she merely a Goddess of Motherhood, although Hekate has always had a special interest in mothers and children. She was often described as Midwife in ancient texts.
In historical sources, Hekate is often interwoven with goddesses. These triplicities formulate a Great Mother Goddess by weaving together all aspects of The Mother Archetype. With Artemis and Selene, she becomes the Wise Crone, the experienced Mother, while they represent the earlier phases of The Mother’s Journey. Hekate is also linked to other forms of the Great Mother Goddess, for example her association with Cybele, whom the Romans venerated as Magna Mater (The Great Mother). Artemis herself was honored as Great Mother in certain areas of the ancient Mediterranean. These goddesses are not simple constructs, easily placed in tidy categories. History, and modern writings, should be taken into consideration rather than treated as dogma.
    She is the darkness.
She is the cry of "enough."
She is the sigil written in stone.
She is the silent walking away of the betrayed.
She is the lonely raising arms to the moon.
She is the lie told to live the truth.
She is the secret circle drawing down her moon.
She is the poison that heals.
She is the bold stare into the future.
She is the blood shed to bring rebirth.
She is all those who dare to become.
She is the power that is our right.
    She is The Dark Mother.
    She has returned.
From Keeping Her Keys: An Introduction to Hekate's Modern Witchcraft//Lesson 4: Ancient Hekate's Many Roles:
From the ancient sources, we know that Hekate was a liminal goddess, standing between worlds, particularly at the threshold of life and death. She was described in many diverse ways including Mother of All, Queen, Savior and World Soul. She was viewed as the torch-bearing guide for those on nightmarish Under World journeys. Not only was she viewed as the guide along the road, but also as the way itself. The variety of the titles bestowed upon her by the ancients often appears contradictory. We need to consider two things. One is that the ancient writers held vastly divergent views of Hekate. The other is that Hekate has always been a complex goddess with multiple roles and abilities.
Many-named Goddess who brings glory to men,
    Whose children are fair,
    Bull-eyed One, Horned One, Nature.
All-Mother, who brings forth both Gods and men
    You roam around Olympus,
And traverse the wide and fathomless abyss.
You are the Beginning and the End.
And you alone are Mistress of All. - The Greek Magical Papyri IV 2785-2890.
“We’re witnessing the end of a 5,000 year reign of patriarchy, and are coming into a society created by our technology that will be more balanced and more feminine. It’s already happening. And I think that the good news is that it’s coming just in time.” - Leonard Shlain
“As the Great Creatrix, the feminine is no vessel and passage for an alien, masculine Other that condescends towards her, enters into her, and favors her with the seed of living. Life originates in her and issues from her, and the light that appears projected on the night sky, which she is herself, is rooted in her depths." - Erich Neumann

Hi I'm Char. I wrote a poem years ago, I would like to share.
Your god. My god is greatness. She is beautiful, loving ,cruel and kind.
She is here, always in the recess of my mind.
I see her there, in the reflection of the glass.
She moves so completely, and I wonder, who saw her last.
And as I see her, a memory has come to pass.
I will tell you what to do.
For she has told me, what to say to you.
Do not fear a woman. Not one.
You see, for one day, you will be that woman.
Waiting as that god, to say this back to me.
That was from December 21 2016.
I'm I wanted to thank you and share because I never knew her name I only called her the She.
    A gift to you.

This is so interesting. I am connecting with Hekate at the moment and I always felt that the contemporary "witchy" depictions of her were narrow, that she is so much more than that. Thank you for this video it has really opened my eyes to my own healing path and I feel good hearing you.
I have a verbally abusive mother, so I was brought up in an unsafe, insecure world. I left home at 25 to be with a now ex partner. Said ex partner was also verbally and emotionally abusive and upon emancipating myself I went on a traveling journey to Bali and other places just to be on my own, be free and learn (I became a yoga teacher). Coming back to the UK, I had to temporarily go back home (I had no where else to go). At first my mother would tell me online she was happy to see me again after over 7 years living away. Coming home was a reality shock, like a brick to the face, within moments of walking through the door she was exactly the same as when I left her at 25, so all my childhood experiences came flooding back. For those couple of months I felt small and all the work I had done on myself was zapped away instantly. But I saw it with adult eyes and I found strength to leave.
I'm now in a safe and happy place away from her but interestingly and very sadly I became pregnant last December but it was ectopic- I nearly died. So I straddled that realm of life giving and death. I lost the pregnacy. But i'm alive.
Two Ayurvedic doctors said the loss of my left fallopian tube was cleansing my body of the mother wound (left being feminine) and my big left toe has grown out its nail (there is no nail there) which according to Ayurveda the toes represent your parents- this is a sign I'm cleansing myself of the mother wound, not to worry new nail will grow back.
I feel you are absoluetley right. Hekate is here with me right now because I'm healing from a deep mother wound, it feels like the final step to letting go and it gives me hope and courage that I am healing that wound within me and I'll have space to become a mother. Thank you xxx

I just purchased your first book on eBay. Today is the New Moon and I felt drawn to this path many years ago but now it’s beginning to start taking form. I decided to get the book you wrote because of this video and your other lectures. Thank you for being a teacher for her so we can know her more and much better.
I do want to make a comment in terms of how you stated that you did not feel the need to own or have a statue of The Great Goddess and I really related to that and I feel that if there was any representation of her that it should be art but aside from that every item in my practice and in my studies, including my books and my own drawings for Magickal purposes is and of her and she should be viewed in that light. Having some statue of a particular goddess creates in my mind “a limitation” where I feel there is none.

This is interesting, because I would like statues for the aesthetic, but I honestly feel like a candle is enough to stand in place of my deities. So far, the only deity with significant (not a candle) representation on my altar is Hel and all I have that sets her apart from the others is that she has two candles and a stone skull.

Thank you for this video. I just bought both your books one of them arrived already. Just waiting on Keeping her keys. You are right about people tribalizing. I have seen this just out and about. I also realize that I do have a deep mother wound. I at this moment am learning how to heal this. I had abusive grandparents who raised me when I was taken away from my mother. My own grandparents told me all sorts of lies. Flash forward 10 years later I find out through my own mother all of those things I was told was a lie. She always wanted a relationship with me. I am thankful to the mother goddess for keeping me alove through all the things I have endured up to now. Once I recieve Keeping her keys I will start working on them right away. Feeling at deaths door in 2020 with covid, Jesus presented himself and not long after my recovery, He introduced Hekate into my life, now I have a whole team of blessed guides who I know are of Love and Light, stand for Truth and Justice, in Love, Kindness and Grace. My confusion is that they refer to me as Hekate reborn! and just recently a connection of 'the three' Persephone, Diana and the Sacred One Haggah! I'd never heard of any of these people before going through what I did in 2020, but what i do know is that I feel loved, cherished, guided and protected in their energies and they help me bring peace and comfort to others with their guidance

I loved this talk. I just had a meditation where I heard " personified male" I don't work with any deity except Hekate so I was confused. Later I watched a video by Miss Kelly-ann Maddox where she shared the opinion that any deity has balanced male & female qualities. This made since to me for what I heard, as well as the feeling that I don't have to work with any male deities; I have everything I need in Hekate. I think any divine feminine name can be worked with and it's potentially all the same thing just different aspects expressed. I'm still going to work with Hekate unless something life changing happens like when I was found by Hekate. She's all I need. Thanks Cyndi! XX

Yes, and in the blog that goes with this video, I briefly touch upon how theorists posit that Hekate's symbols of key and torch represent the male (Animus), thereby indicating a balance of feminine and masculine.

I hear what you say about how living is honoring the Great Mother. I was considering venerating Shakti (I had a vision of he a few months ago and felt I should try to bond with her), and I asked her if she wanted to help out with my witchcraft. She basically told me, no, I just need to accept her blessings. I understand she is a Universal Force rather than an anthropomorphized deity like some of the other goddesses I speak to, but I do feel she projected herself to me in a way I could understand, which was that of Lakshmi.
Hecate just announced herself to me this week, and I had to take in consideration how much time I would have to devote to each Deity I want to work with. I made the decision to focus on Hecate, Lilith, and Hel, and hope Shakti would understand if it is true that such a Universal Force could present Her energy and Will as the face of an individual Goddess. If that's all true, then I have thee very similar, yet distinct Goddesses that will fulfill the role Shakti would. I don't sense any kind of upset on her pat, either, so I think she's okay with it, but I can still call on her any time I need her.
Long comment short, I really appreciate this video. Thank you for sharing your wisdom

    • @CyndiBrannen

I believe Shakti understands. The different faces of the divine appear when we are ready. I've found that when the so-called "dark goddesses," arrive, it is a call to do deep inner work.

Love this whole video, the Goddess verses the Alphabet sounds super interesting, I made a couple connections to that I just have to share . The whole idea of a shift in consciousness once language was introduced is something I have been hit with now twice two very different places in a matter of 12 hours. when reading some of the differences between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals yesterday ( some light reading on migration patterns of early man 😂) it discussed how there was a definite shift in consciousness at that point that made man , Homo sapiens express ideas through language. now they were talking symbols for sentences , shit sentences at all really just words period. then in this class today you mention consciousness shift from spoken word/ symbols to the actual written word and etymology I suppose. It made me think about what might have been going on astrologically at those times . I wonder if they would have longed up with the zodiacal progression. Or maybe Saturn/ Jupiter conjunction cycles when shifting elements. Probably a combination . I know total rabbit hole rabbit 🐇 !!!!!!

    • @CyndiBrannen
      @CyndiBrannen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thanks for lifting up these ideas. For those who may not be experts in astrology, Saturn includes the energy of structure, and even confinement. He is timelessness, connected to the Father of the Gods (Cronos). Jupiter, Zeus to the Greeks, is the new father/young king who is enthusiastic, expansive, and less wise than his father, Saturn. When they are conjunct, as they are in 2021 and were in 2020, there is a tension that brings great restructuring. This varies depending on what sign they are together in. This year they abide in Aquarius. An example of the cool friction of this situation can be found in the Texas deep freeze. Jupiter-Saturn conjuncts are rare, but not exceptionally so. What I am curious about is how the beginning of the Age of Pisces could be involved, and how the Age of Aries could have set the tone for all that transpired leading away from a balanced understanding of Anima/Animus and towards a hyper masculine orientation. That is very Mars to me. Then, with the birth of Jesus Christ, a new age - Pisces - began.

Thank you so much! I've been really enjoying learning about Hekate from your studies. One thing I just want to urge, is even if we're talking ancient symbolism, it feels uncomfortable to associate ovaries with femininity - birth yes, but I know several non-binary and and trans men whom still have ovaries and do not feel comfortable associating with the term femme, or it applied to their biological birth parts. Thank you again for your amazing work

    • @CyndiBrannen
      @CyndiBrannen  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is such a great point, thanks for raising it. Let me begin by saying that I have been teaching the Psychology of Gender for about 20 years. This is to preface my comments as a scholar of gender. In general, I discuss archetypal aspects of the feminine, which, of course, are not the same as modern conceptions of gender or what any one individual may experience. Ovaries are a perfect example of what I mean. As part of the symbolism of the archetype of The Great Mother, they represent fertility, potentiality, and so on. When we see Hekate and other goddesses associated with horns, specifically bull horns but also others, academicians theorize that they were chosen because they look like (think of a bull's head) the internal female (in a strictly biological sense) reproductive organs. So ovaries can be seen as symbolic of the archetype of The Great Mother, which is Anima, the feminine principle. This is very different than essentialism, which would be to say that anyone who has ovaries is a woman. While we are all part of the web of archetypes, our lived experience of their symbols must be understood at the individual level.

Great talk. Thank you! Your views on Hekate and the mother Goddess really resonate with me.
When I first felt the strong contact from the Divine Mother, I asked her, what image can I use in my practice to connect with you? I heard a laugh and a voice something like this: "my dear, I'm all around you. I'm everything you see. All images are equally valid. Find your own way."
About a year later, now, it is all Hekate for me. She is such a complete image and in herself already holds the idea of many faces. She almost feels like a portal to any and all other existing faces.
Anyway, can we use that beautiful sigil you created in our own work? The sigil that combines key, crossroads and triplicity in one?

    • @CyndiBrannen
      @CyndiBrannen  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello. Thanks for your comments. The sigil is based on the astrological symbol for the asteroid Hekate, so I certainly don't have copyright over it. The version I use as the sigil for my school, The Covina Institute, is slightly different than the astro symbol.

I never knew I had a aunt named Karen like me. I saw her in a dream with mom and she had a red veil connected to her head over her face. Mom said in the dream it’s her sister. I woke up and told granny and she cried. Aunt Karen was killed at birth and had a caul

I read ‘Hekate: A Devotional’ by Vivienne Moss and it says unicorns are associated with Hekate however I have never been able to find anything that states this. I am so drawn to unicorns, always have been, I have unicorn tattoos and artwork everywhere. I was wondering if you know anything about the Unicorn/Hecate link? I know she’s associated with horses, thresholds and protecting young women (which I associate a lot with unicorns as well).

I think the name of the goddesses are less important than the realisation that they are all faces of The Goddess. The Female Essence. The Feminine base of the Spiritual Trinity. The Female (Yin), the Male (Yang) and Great Spirit.

So it's silly to think that because I have trauma and I have acted out that trauma in my life before, that hekate wouldn't accept me. This is a being who knows all types of Darkness? Helps people liberate themselves from their trauma? I know she may not work with everyone, but since she knows the truth of the universe the likelihood that she's judgmental being absent? A fixture in the universe that is boundless wisdom?

She represents the Feminine aspect of creation .. a feminine Diety and that no life would exist in this reality without both a feminine and a masculine creator ..... even the Bible says " as you seek so shall you find" ask the Goddess or Great Mother to reveal herself to you in a way that is relevant to you. If you are sincere .she will come ... or you can continue to be afraid of the God of Abraham. Peace be with you.
