Enjoying your videos. I live in Kentucky, and the Big hats hearken back to Southern Bell pre civil war era, but our Derby is also greatly influenced by your royal family and wedding hat designers. I ❤ them all.
There are reasons there is a lot of pink on Oaks Day, the day before the Derby . One, the main race, The Oaks, is for fillies. Instead of a blanket of roses, they race for a blanket of pink lilies, Lillies for the Fillies. Several years ago, to tie in with the pink theme, a Pink Out , a celebration of breast cancer survivors, is held at trackside. I have never been to the track, but part of the fun of having the races on tv all day Friday and Saturday is the see the fun hats! I used to wear hats often when I was younger. I would like to get back to it.
The giant hat with the pink rose would be really lovely reduced to a normal scale. The one with the floppy brim looks like she'd been caught in the rain.
Hello, Ilona. I'm from Baltimore, Maryland and we have the second part of the Triple Crown Race- The Preakness. Our colors are yellow and black and our winner gets a blanket of Blackeyed Susans. We, too, have our hats for our annual Flower Mart during Preakness Week. Enjoyed your commentary and I have learned a lot about hats since becoming a subscriber.
New American subscriber here. This is the 2nd vid I've watched so far. When you stated that you don't like novelty hats, I just about spit my gum out cause I had just watched the vid where you are wearing a banana on your hat! Enjoyed both videos . Edited for spelling.
hello! Thank you so much for subscribing! yes- I really am wearing a novelty hat in my latest video 😅🍌 I guess I've changed my mind over the past year 🤣
Ilona, you are so bubbly and engaging!! I was shocked at how few comments there are here, I suspect that will change soon! I loved La Bricoleuse's Tim Burton inspired hat, and that dry wit XD great collaboration!
Those big roses that hold their shape so well and are thicker are made out of foam, cheap foam I would say, from the pictures but Galelina flowers teaches flower making with 1mm thick foam. They are amazing. She also marble dyes them to get different textures.
Some of these novelty hats are surprising. With the expense of going to the derby, tickets, hotel, betting money, and of course a few mint juleps, you'd think a little more would go into a quality hat. The picnic hat was a successful novelty DIY hat...it's a little bit a joke but not obnoxiously attention demanding. It'd be interesting to see how some of these would stand up to breezy day.
The black and white hat is not attractive at all. The burgundy portion looks like a jesters cap and the black and white portion looks like a warped bowl.
It was nice to get an English view of American Derby hats.

This turned out so well! And the kitty outro is fantastic. Riley is usually quite camera shy.

I think you are right! I totally forgot that you can make flowers out of foam. The Marble dyeing sounds like an interesting effect 😊
Loved watching all of the different styles!
Hello Rochelle! I loved all the different styles too - it's so nice to see so much variety in headwear on display ❤️
I like the rose headband, but I think that its visual weight would look better with the hair worn loose and full to balance it.
This is fun
You are super cute, along with being interesting. You are good to watch after one of my tiring nursing work shifts!!!🤗🌷🌷🙏
I like Jenny’s derby hat the other is too big.that big red rose hat is ridiculous!

Yes, windy days should definitely be a consideration when making a hat!

🤣the bigger the better
Some too big !!!!
The rose headband looks like a glue gun, CVS plastic headband, & Michael's fake flower rainy day project for a 10 year old.
