- Here's a Volkswagen commercial circa 1997 featuring the song "Da Da Da" performed by the German group, Trio. I recall Trio actually making a mini-comeback during this period and had this 80's album re-released in the United States.

Just thought of this commercial for the first time in 20 years and wondered if it was still around. Thank you, Internet, for being the repository of literally everything.

Lol same here! I just thought of this commercial because I picked up an old chair on the side of the road (Adirondack, so no smell, but it has a small crack in it).
When I was young my dad and I loved this commercial. For years, anytime my dad would see furniture on the side of the road he would say “da da da da”.

It's fascinating that older commercials all look like reality and lifelike compared to modern ones
That’s the style of German commercials. They’re longer and tell a little story. Like Katrina and the Waves playing Walking on Sunshine was used for a German Langnese ice cream commercial with a little story about youthful exuberance.
A truly brilliant piece of advertising and filmmaking. It completely disguises its sales pitch as an afterthought while charming the viewer into submission throughout, and provides a near perfect portrait of 90s slacker culture. Still holds up beautifully 20 years later.
It definitely makes me want a manual transmission hatchback car of some kind.
I think the slacker culture still going strong in 2019.
Funny story about that is I remember the next day in class our teacher complaining about how stupid and pointless this commercial was. I guess it wasn't so stupid and pointless if she was talking about it the next day I have all the commercials after the Super Bowl?

I love this commercial. So simple yet so memorable. I don't know how it works in the other countries but here in Brazil, most car commercials are like "look at our car, it's powerful" but this... they don't even say what's the car they're advertising but again, they managed to make this commercial so memorable nonetheless
Not sure if you’ll see this. You just nailed it on the head! Arnold Agency out of Boston changed the way car commercials were made with this one, having no talking points yet selling the car. Great eye!
This commercial used to crack me (and everyone else) up in high school. Living in a small town, my friends and I would often drive around aimlessly, listening to music. Never picked up a chair, though! I swear, if we had TH-cam back then, it would have been viral!
I'm glad people are still getting enjoyment out of it almost 20 years later. This was out while I was in high school as well, and it brings back fond memories.

I’ve been singing this to my kids for years. And have been trying to figure out what it’s called for years. I finally asked the right person who said “you mean that VW commercial?” Now I show my kids and they are mesmerized

Funny enough, the song came out in 1982 and is one of the highest selling singles.
It beats out most of the Beatles, Madonna, and Michael Jackson when compared to their singles.
@@TheDancerMacabre Yeah… That’s because all of the artist you named make LP records that are worth buying… Singles are meant to be advertisements for your whole album… Just so you know. If you’re selling a lot of singles it means you are a one hit wonder. Don’t worry be happy is also a top selling single I guarantee you Bobby McFerrin ain’t flexing on selling more singles than the Beatles (Who by the way weren’t even around in 1982 so it’s a really dumb thing to bring up) or Michael Jackson. Because it’s a stupid thing to flex on.

Truly loved this commerical as a teenager so much that I recorded it onto VHS in 1997! I hate most commercials and find them so manipulative, but these VW ads back in the day were truly like little, short films. No pushing of stereotypes or over-objectifying or compartmentalizing "types" of people... just two cute regular dudes hanging out. I still love it! Thanks for posting

We used to have a Broncos fan club back in 1997 and when this commercial would come on, we’d replace the da da da with Broncos Rule and sing it quietly but together. The rest of the bar with the other fan clubs loved it.
This was my first experience with American commercials. It’s been stuck in my head for all these years.

a lot of people don't actually throw out stuff with bed bugs on their lawn. It would be really counter productive to getting rid of bed bugs

I was at the October fest around 20 years ago in Germany and they played this song in 1 of the tents and it went wild. Imagine around 5 thousand people all with a shit house on from great German beer dancing and singing to this tune. It was fabulous ! 😃😃😃😃😃😃

I remember this freshman year of highschool. I was even able to find the skeleton toy at a michaels

I remember they re released the single in 1997 and they used to play it on the radio. My sister and I were in shock when my mom told us it was actually 15 years old and it was originally entirely sung in german.

It makes me think of my first car. Not that I had this car. I just got a car when this commercial came out. I would sing this while driving. OMG the memories came rushing back as it first started. 17 yrs ago. wow.

I was a senior in high school and I was sitting in Algebra II class, singing this song with a classmate, when our math teacher shouted out, "that's Trio!" We were like, "What?! Naw man, we're just singing a song from a VW commercial". He then went on to describe how he and his college friends uses to play cards to the band's records and offered to make us a tape (yes I said tape) of the album....

When the new VW Bug was first being displayed at new car shows, this song was played continuously with them.
i remember seeing this commercial as a little kid and finding the song super catchy! then i remember hearing it on the radio and wanting to listen to it because of this commercial!
Just saw this on Buzzfeed. I had no idea what song they were talking about, but NOW I DO. And I still remember the lyrics.
It's interesting to me that the marketing team back then barely showed any of the car, and didn't mention anything at all about it. But it was catchy...I remember pretty well seeing that one.

I bought one of those skeletons in Spencer’s at my local mall in the late 90’s because of this commercial.
I think this was more like '93, I was in elementary school when this came out. I remember having this song stuck in my head while playing in a neighbor kid's side yard and his parents kicked me out after they caught us jumping on his bed while listening to Onyx lol.

I wish someone would compile these Volkswagen commercials that were disguised as music videos. I thought Pink Moon was the first one, but this qualifies 3 years earlier! They should have kept this ad campaign going. They were great little films.

My girlfriend at the time used to love imitating this commercial, and it was adorable. Especially when she did the little electronic percussion sounds in between the "da da da" parts.

Back in the days of no bed bugs being everywhere
DDT had killed them off in the US for several decades. Bed bugs came back though due to air travel, with people bringing the insects back into the US in heir luggage and clothing. Which DDT never actually harmed anyone, but the scare of it possibly harming people is why it was banned. In Africa, many nations are begging Europe and the West to un-ban DDT, so African nations can kill off mosquitoes carrying malaria.
“DDT never actually harmed anyone” is a lie. It harmed and even killed the people who applied it, particularly on farms.
