Having moved to New York from the Midwest the funniest thing about the New Yorkers is the way they interact with each other, nicest people but just different
One more thing. I know a guy who changes accents every few sentences. He'll start out, say, talking with a Brooklyn accent, then switch to Russian, then to German, then to Southern, then to Italian...He's really entertaining.
""TruMorbid "You know wat, if you don't like the way I tawk, fuk you!" Perfect line to start this video off. Lol "" Would be a great line to start EVERY conversation :-)))
But--there is bleedover, too. Sometimes you can have an Italian New Yorker who grows up around Jewish New Yorkers and sounds Jewish, and vice versa. So there is also somewhat of a neighborhood accents, but it's more ethnically based. And yes, the accents are disappearing, at least in Manhattan and large swaths of Brooklyn (the parts that have been gentrified and settled by Americans from other parts of the USA).
It's of an exaggeration to talk of NY accents divided by boroughs and neighborhoods--however, thereare divisions in the NY accent based on ethnicity. Italian New Yorkers sound different from Jewish New Yorkers, who sound different from Irish New Yorkers, who sound different from Puerto Ricans and the original languages of these ethnic groups influence the various NY accents, etc. Of course, these ethnic groups (in the past at least) dominated certain neighborhoods and boroughs.
This trailer is almost 15 years old. But even in 2008, the old NY accent was dying. It was on life support with the the idiots on the Jersey Shore show and Everybody Loves Raymond. If you notice, everyone in this clip is of an older generation. Today, the typical NY accent is Spanish. Yeah, there are a lot of Indians, West Indians, Asians, Russians, etc. But the immigrant parents keep their native accents, but their American born children grow up sounding neutral. It seems only the Latinos perpetuate an accent. And of course African Americans, who's accent is their own and has changed little in 100 years. Someone will probably have a problem with what I just said.
Therefore, since certain neighborhoods in certain boroughs were dominated by certain ethnicities--some people think there is a borough/neighborhood-specific accent--but not exactly. A Bensonhurst, Brooklyn-Italian NY accent is not that different from a Staten Island-Italian NY accent, and a Jewish NY accent from Forest Hills, Queens is not that different from a Jewish NY accent from Canarsie. A Puerto Rican New Yorker from the South Bronx sounds like a Puerto Rican from East Harlem, too...
No matter how much you try to deny it, if you were raised in new york ...you have a slight accent. For example, my best friend sounds like a white girls from Cali but when she says certain words like cawfee instead of coffee and tawk instead of talk.
anybody able to hear what the Katz's guy says when he's talking about people from Wisconsin? his voice gets a little drowned out by the sound of other people talking - I'm curious, thanks! (I'm not from Wisconsin, don't hold back)
I love regional accents and appreciate them all. To me a regional accent is to speech what spices are to food. An accent makes speech more interesting and gives information about the speaker. I'm from Queens, NY. I used to be able to identify the borough. When I left NYC in the 1990s I hated NYC by then, especially after Dinkins did his best to ruin it. For years I hated everything to do with NYC; seeing NY license plates, hearing a NYC accent, etc. After some years away in MA, CA and rural FL, I moved to southeast FL and hearing NYC accents again was like music. Today the NYC accent is almost extinict. Like Billy Joel's swan song about NYC, "Miami 2017", NYC is populated by people from everywhere else; rich hipsters, financial industry people, and who knows who else.
lol i have a thick new york accent i try to suppress but it still comes out.. i mean.. i don't know why they say new yorkers don't have much of an accent anymore.. that's a load of bologna.. anyway.. god bless my big apple. :)
Ya ya know why cuz all the real New Yorkers like myself cant afford the rent to live in our own city anymore .You can thank theses rich out of town hipsters & yuppies for that. New Yorkers we have completely lost our culture cuz we sold out for $
Stupid comments - most of those are Germanic accents - related to the Frank Lopez from "Scarface" family of English accents Italians and Irish have an accent in the same as Nuyorican type of accent - you know Andy Garcia's type of accent. Puerto Ricans - yes they are different from Nuyoricans, Colombians, Argentines, Cubans are more likely to talk like some of the folks in this video than non-whites like Italians and French guarantee you, most in the video are Germanic.
I'm from NJ but my accent is NY-ish in many ways. I've never actually heard anyone say turdy turd & turd in my life tho, that seems a bit of an exaggeration.
BUT MY DUPES, I MEAN I KNOW WHAT YUH SAYIN::::BUT THE OTHER OLD MAN SAID IT TOO AND HE WAS TOTALLY APART FROM TTHE "turdy turd & turd" guy , sooo i mean i have heard it, i grew up in long island, and when i waz like 20ish i lived wit a haitian girl in flatbush, so go figure
Too bad most good New York accents have gone the way of reasonable rent prices in the city. Now it seems everyone in New York just got here from somewhere else.
