Just realized Shadow of the Cross had that one part where they chanted "Look! At! Myself!", which evolved into the "Luck! Runs! Out.." part. Never connected the dots on the studio version, maybe since there wasn't any layered vocals.
Lyrics Luck. Runs. Out. Crawling from the wreckage one more time This map is teared, can't read the signs Boulevard is rusted, hard to turn On the path of destruction, feel it burn Feel safe In the danger Feel good In the bad Got the burning Got the speed Lose your turn You crash and burn You walk away 'Cause it ain't no good when there's nothing Ain't no good when you can't go wrong Crash and burn and you walk away How many times can i hear you say Ain't no good when there's nothing Ain't no good when you can't go wrong Luck. Runs. Out. You crawl back in But your luck runs out Luck. Runs. Out. You love with my struggle And in love with my pain Much needed to keep me down again Don't allow myself to feel too good Unworthy of me couldn't if i could Feel safe In the danger Feel good In the bad Got the burning Got the speed Lose your turn You crash and burn You walk away 'Cause it ain't no good when there's nothing Ain't no good when you can't go wrong Crash and burn and you walk away How many times can i hear you say Ain't no good when there's nothing Ain't no good when you can't go wrong Luck. Runs. Out. You crawl back in But your luck runs out So you crawl back in Deep in your obsession Sent to crash and burn This in your confession Ain't no good when there's nothing Ain't no good when you can't go wrong Crash and burn and you walk away How many times can i hear you say Ain't no good when there's nothing Ain't no good when you can't go wrong Luck. Runs. Out. Crawl back in But your luck runs out
Now go listen to "shadow of the cross" it's this song idea but back in the st anger days.... Its actually cool to see how an idea can be under the surface for that long only to be there...bubble and mature for a bit until it finally materialises and grows into a full song
I like both versions! I really like the distortion used on this version. Sounds like old school stuff. I like the variety and complexity on the studio version but this is cool too.
Its pretty fascinating to hear how shadows of the cross turned into this into one of their best songs since the black album. But lets all be thankful these lyrics were scrapped
What if James ran out of ideas and the chorus was " I like eating at Wendy`s, i go home and pet my dog. I`m getting sleepy going to take a nap. Wake up later and take a shower.
I can't say whether it's better or worse than the album version, but this demo gives me a whole different vibe. The guitar tone and its rawness, riffs and sections slightly varying from the finished song... This gotta be my favourite Metallica demo, along with No Life Til Leather's Mechanix for mostly the same reasons.
I really LOVE the demo, but the final version was better because it was much thrashier. If Metallica released the song this way, it wouldn't have fit the album.
I like certain things better about the demo and certain things about the studio version. I think the lyrics in the final are better but the main riff in the demo is just sick. I like how they put the other riff at the end of the song to finish nice and heavy ;)
TheRedArmy The BB&S demo is called Black Squirrell because they only exist in Toronto where the riff was created. This is called flamingo because a riff in it was based on Rob doodling with flamengo style guitaring.
flamingo is becase they create these song from a song of flamenco (spanish music). and they didnt understand the name name so they confund with they animal, so they translate it
I 100 percent would bet, if this was what they released and the other song was the demo you would all be saying the demo was better.... Im not dissing the demo is kick ass, but it is no where near better then the released version
+Lachlan Morley i agree. some of the demos are actually more original , because its before the producers get their hands on it... The released version is actually better.
If All Nightmare Long was on different Metallica albums, here’s what I image the main riff would go like KEA - fast RTL - fast MoP - fast AJFA - fast Black Album - fast Load/Reload - slow St Anger - slow (Shadows of the Cross) HTSD - fast
Metallica has always had a slow-pased son on each album, and the fans loved them. but when they make an album Where almost every song is slow-pased (the black album), fans go like: FUCK! THIS! BAND!
i absolutely love the grooviness of the slowed down chorus in the demo, it has a much more doomsday-like feeling idk it just sounds better slowed down IMO but the original is still a kick ass song though!
This still remains a good mix from Shadows Of The Cross from the 2001 St Anger Presidio sessions and the final All Nightmare Long, being the closest we get to a studio recording of Shadows
many people say that the demo is better but the original is faster and great, if they had released this a lot of people would say they are not like before and is like reload amd thinks like that, I promise
I don't think anyone would be happy with Metallica no matter what they do anymore. They could release a literal Ride the Lightning or ...And Justice for All pt. 2 and people would still say they suck. Also, I think this qualifies as the original because it was the demo before the final version. Either way, I agree the album version is better.
man.. not that i dont like the song.. but i just feel they changed it way too much from the "Flamenco" that rob was playing the making of video. That shit sounded so epic, specially when James fiddled around with it on his guitar, but this song just kinda feels.. i guess generic? relative to the rest of the album. Ok, maybe I didn't like the song, but that's just cuz i think they shouldve kept the flamenco in a purer form.
1:10-1:16 is very similar to a riff from a song used in the Some Kind of Monster movie but not released in the album. It's in the part where they are playing songs for Cliff Bernstein towards the end of the movie
Love the little double bass parts lars does wish they made it to the album version. This version is a little heavier than the album version as well but what ever All Nightmare Long is still my second favorite Metallica song.
I find main riff on demo to sound much more badass and heavy, but it also reminds me of Balls to The Wall, lol. However, everything else is better on studio. Probably, if I learn how to play a guitar and assemble my own band, I will make a cover of this song. \m/
This is actually a pretty good track. They really had to work this out to make it what it is on the album, because there are so many changes on the album version. It's faster, verses are differently constructed and the pre chorus totally changed.
All Nightmare Long: Hunter's vision
Flamingo: Prey's vision
This feels like a "what if All Nightmare Long was on Load/Reload" cover
The tuning of this is drop C#. Load and ReLoad’s tunings were Eb (usually), C# (Bas Seed) and D (Devil’s Dance).
It originates from a 2001 demo that was never publicly released
“Presidio”
The closest we'll get to a 'what if All Nightmare Long was on S&M' cover.
Not even close, this is heavier and thrash as fuck
This is more like st anger
That main riff. When I heard this demo for the first time it really got me. It has a great feel.
actually form leftover st anger material
venjamin uyoa I thought the chorus was the only thing left over from this song in st. Anger
look up "shadows of the cross"
Its groovy
@@gatinho6248 presidio album actually
2:03 - 2:07 James's voice goes back the the load and reload sound! Why cant he do that for the whole song??
That would be amazing if he could still sing like that.
"Ain't no good when you can't go wrong." I love that!!
If All Nightmare Long was on ReLoad 😂
I say this because of the typical rhythm and style of lyrics
Dark Souls mantra
2:01 1997 James?
lol it's the same guy
Wow
This version has that Presidio feel.. mostly because one of the riffs is from when they were in the Presidio
Just realized Shadow of the Cross had that one part where they chanted "Look! At! Myself!", which evolved into the "Luck! Runs! Out.." part. Never connected the dots on the studio version, maybe since there wasn't any layered vocals.
The breakdown at 6:18 is really damn heavy! Lars's double bass at 7:00 is also fucking awesome!
Lyrics
Luck. Runs. Out.
Crawling from the wreckage one more time
This map is teared, can't read the signs
Boulevard is rusted, hard to turn
On the path of destruction, feel it burn
Feel safe
In the danger
Feel good
In the bad
Got the burning
Got the speed
Lose your turn
You crash and burn
You walk away
'Cause it ain't no good when there's nothing
Ain't no good when you can't go wrong
Crash and burn and you walk away
How many times can i hear you say
Ain't no good when there's nothing
Ain't no good when you can't go wrong
Luck. Runs. Out.
You crawl back in
But your luck runs out
Luck. Runs. Out.
You love with my struggle
And in love with my pain
Much needed to keep me down again
Don't allow myself to feel too good
Unworthy of me couldn't if i could
Feel safe
In the danger
Feel good
In the bad
Got the burning
Got the speed
Lose your turn
You crash and burn
You walk away
'Cause it ain't no good when there's nothing
Ain't no good when you can't go wrong
Crash and burn and you walk away
How many times can i hear you say
Ain't no good when there's nothing
Ain't no good when you can't go wrong
Luck. Runs. Out.
You crawl back in
But your luck runs out
So you crawl back in
Deep in your obsession
Sent to crash and burn
This in your confession
Ain't no good when there's nothing
Ain't no good when you can't go wrong
Crash and burn and you walk away
How many times can i hear you say
Ain't no good when there's nothing
Ain't no good when you can't go wrong
Luck. Runs. Out.
Crawl back in
But your luck runs out
It’s cool to hear the song before it’s final form. Inspiring. It’s a process.
This has more Metallica in it, if you know what i mean
Its pretty fascinating to hear how shadows of the cross turned into this into one of their best songs since the black album. But lets all be thankful these lyrics were scrapped
TheBass I highly disagree it's like yes lyrics they don't make sense any sense and sound like they don't belong
It's "Shadows of the Cross"
+RAZIEL “Raz” Sharon Ikr
Nope, it's Balls to the Wall, lol :)
Next time on things I won't be able to unhear
RAZIEL Sharon they have the same riff but the songs are different
Shadows of the Cross is the demo that inspired this one. This, Shadows of the Cross, and All Nightmare Long are all great sounding though
That double pedal is awesome.
----------------------------4:50- that break down leading up to that cool ass riff is amazing
it s so different from the studio version... we are talking about two different songs basically
What if James ran out of ideas and the chorus was " I like eating at Wendy`s, i go home and pet my dog. I`m getting sleepy going to take a nap. Wake up later and take a shower.
or like on the justice demos: wannannanna wannannanna wanannnanannannana
Or: “YEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH”
3:10 "in love with my struggle in love with my pain"
maybe the nightmare was about flamingos
Sometimes I dream about flamingos chasing me during my sleep
I can't say whether it's better or worse than the album version, but this demo gives me a whole different vibe. The guitar tone and its rawness, riffs and sections slightly varying from the finished song... This gotta be my favourite Metallica demo, along with No Life Til Leather's Mechanix for mostly the same reasons.
I really LOVE the demo, but the final version was better because it was much thrashier. If Metallica released the song this way, it wouldn't have fit the album.
Musa Tariq Ye
What about Cyanide?
This is actually pretty good
This... is insane. I love All Nightmare Long, but I like this better.
I like certain things better about the demo and certain things about the studio version. I think the lyrics in the final are better but the main riff in the demo is just sick. I like how they put the other riff at the end of the song to finish nice and heavy ;)
Honestly, one of the few things I prefer from this version is the part right before each version, but I like the speed of the other one a lot more.
I like the album version better, but James' vocals are definitely superior here.
Ha, all of the DM demos have weird names(example:Flamingo,Hi Guy,Capser)
***** yea,probably.I agree
TheRedArmy The BB&S demo is called Black Squirrell because they only exist in Toronto where the riff was created. This is called flamingo because a riff in it was based on Rob doodling with flamengo style guitaring.
Vmt16
we have black squirrels in BC too.... >.>
flamingo is becase they create these song from a song of flamenco (spanish music). and they didnt understand the name name so they confund with they animal, so they translate it
3pedrops yeah well not actually they named it flamingo cause they started it from a flamingo solo that rob played
fuck this is groovy
now if they had this version, with the final version and it's chorus.. i'd be in love
This seems more old school metallica to me, than the final version.
It's usually the fact that the demo version is new to you where you're used to the album version. The album one is better, I think.
This sounds like St Anger James not Death Magnetic James
I think they should have kept the main riff slow like in Shadows of the Cross and Flamingo, it just sounds so much better.
This track deserve to be released
If All Nightmare Long was on different Metallica albums, here’s what I image the main riff would go like
KEA - fast
RTL - fast
MoP - fast
AJFA - fast
Black Album - fast
Load/Reload - slow
St Anger - slow (Shadows of the Cross)
HTSD - fast
AJFA - Extrem Fast
i liked this because this was one of the steps to creating this awesome album
flamingo with the solo of all nightmare long would beautiful
Feel safe in the danger..
2:43 That last ''Luck runs out'' part was awesome!
this version shits all over the album version, this is way more awesome
at 1.25 speed
brylidan it does not sound good
This one sounds much more badass than the album version
main riff is better
nioc nam the main riff is the same just slower
@@kyle8742 not really
It’s basically “Shadows Of The Cross”.
God, I love that raw guitar sound.
It is the last part which turns me into a spastic-epeleptic monster!!!
I LOVE THIS SOO MUCH!!!
the main riff (0:50) of this demo can be heard in the some kind of monster movie (around the 1 hour 27 minute mark)
Yeah, it's called 'Shadows of the cross'
it was because the riffs was based around a flamingo riff that Rob played,
This sounds more like the new album
WOW!!!
This is an example of hard work...They didn't stop working on the songs until the end and what we got was a great album.
this tunning is C#, but in the real tunning its D, the 6th string (E) its dropped D.
Metallica has always had a slow-pased son on each album, and the fans loved them. but when they make an album Where almost every song is slow-pased (the black album), fans go like: FUCK! THIS! BAND!
I kinda like the slower groove in the first half, then picks up for the solos/breakdowns like their ballads usually do
Glad that this demo was adjusted, and the final version is way better
This really feels like the middle point between St Anger and Death Magnetic, especially the tones
i absolutely love the grooviness of the slowed down chorus in the demo, it has a much more doomsday-like feeling idk it just sounds better slowed down IMO but the original is still a kick ass song though!
Technically this is the original
Technically not.
@Luke technically yes, dipshit.
I like this best, the finished song is good to, but this is best ;)
Wow this is really good. I would've loved to this version on the album instead.
This version is better the original! By far!
Main riff very similar to Balls to the Wall
Actually, in the final song, they just switched the riff. Instead of it going lower, it goes higher.
2:02 Oh no.. the sound from Reload album again.. LOL
sound familiar? part of the riff 1st heard on 0:53 was part of "shadows of the Cross" an unreleased song from St. Anger
The production sounds better that on the original.
Velion okay devil Lars
Velion technically this is the original
that awkward moment when the demo has a better mix than the polished product
The riff at 0:51 is so fucking good. It's so good they used it again on Spit Out The Bone.
Kotow Boy where on bone did they use this I don't hear it in the song at all might just be dumb but idk
Kotow Boy Nope.
Ima blame Lars, just how he ruined Justice
They used that riff on Now That We're Dead actually.
This still remains a good mix from Shadows Of The Cross from the 2001 St Anger Presidio sessions and the final All Nightmare Long, being the closest we get to a studio recording of Shadows
SOTC has only the base riff for the song and really just sounds like a whole other song, where as this is definitely what lead up to ANL
This is what I like to call FREAKIN AWESOME!!!!!!
the "luck burns out" part absolutely better
+Berke Kaya It's "luck.....runs.....out!" not burns!
+dapster thanks :D
NP!!
Luck runssss outttttt
I like the slower pace, it gives it a real bad-ass feel. The finished version is cool as hell though.
a couple of these riffs are from the recordings in 2001 that were supposed to be presidio before James went to rehab
----------------------------6:29- I can't believe that riff was going to be so short and have NO beat under it.
many people say that the demo is better but the original is faster and great, if they had released this a lot of people would say they are not like before and is like reload amd thinks like that, I promise
Is the riff at the 6:40 mark one that was originally debuted live as one of the "New songs" live, and then it got spliced in here. It seems familiar.
This demo was named this because of Robert playing flamingo on an acoustic, which James took the technique for in the intro :)
It's unbelievable that this demo version is not only better in production, but it beats the original in style and rhythm... holy s**t!
this is awesome
man.. not that i dont like the song.. but i just feel they changed it way too much from the "Flamenco" that rob was playing the making of video. That shit sounded so epic, specially when James fiddled around with it on his guitar, but this song just kinda feels.. i guess generic? relative to the rest of the album.
Ok, maybe I didn't like the song, but that's just cuz i think they shouldve kept the flamenco in a purer form.
Even though I like the song (and the demo) a lot, I must admit that I agree with you !
CptShiba Generic??? I don't know a single album even similar to DM. It's a timeless masterpiece .
1:10-1:16 is very similar to a riff from a song used in the Some Kind of Monster movie but not released in the album. It's in the part where they are playing songs for Cliff Bernstein towards the end of the movie
I got St. Anger vibes from this
Shadows of the Cross maybe?
This the main riff in this version sounds like a left over from the st anger sessions. I don’t mind that cause I love that riff
The final product in the album is better. This is good but to disjointed.
This version has too much snare and lead is too slow.
The demo Version has more groove in it, so that what metallica sounds like metallica since ride the lightning
put in 1.25 speed, is better
minute 44 is that part played by Robert
this had some good ideas, but c'mon, the DM version is absolutely killer
I do like these demos versions, but well perfer the final version
I do love the riff, like how heavy it is, but i like the final version better, but this is still sick and better than End Game
The tone of it is definitely something they kept in mind for here comes revenge
2:44 actually sounds a lot better here than on the CD
To James,
I like it as much as All Nightmare Long!
Good composition!
Love the little double bass parts lars does wish they made it to the album version. This version is a little heavier than the album version as well but what ever All Nightmare Long is still my second favorite Metallica song.
Way better than the album version! Much groove definition and power!
Great song !!!
man that main riff sounds fucking awesome in that flat tuning
at 5:52 the fucking freight train comes through...that is one badass riff!
Yeah the studio version is, just this demo is drop C# but when they play All Nightmare Long live they tune it like this demo.
I find main riff on demo to sound much more badass and heavy, but it also reminds me of Balls to The Wall, lol. However, everything else is better on studio. Probably, if I learn how to play a guitar and assemble my own band, I will make a cover of this song. \m/
anybody knows where you can get the guitar tab of this one, i once found one, but can't find it anymore :(
+Jeroen Reyns Just listen
+Jeroen Reyns On Songsterr
+Jeroen Reyns ultimate-guitar.com best tab site outthere
songsterr is better imo. ultimate guitar has alot of inaccurate tabs
I still think the album version sounds more ominous
Its to slow for me, I like more the one in the CD, its more thrashier, and I like that
This is actually a pretty good track. They really had to work this out to make it what it is on the album, because there are so many changes on the album version. It's faster, verses are differently constructed and the pre chorus totally changed.
