The best about this is each guy is unique. It’s meaningless to compare them, sure each has different technical skill sets but that isn’t what music is about, it’s about eliciting emotion in you!

The greatest thing that got Vai to where he is today is the time with Zappa. If you tried some cookie cutter guitar shit with Frank , on the next show he probably wouldn't give you a set list and then tell you he wasn't feeling well and make you take control .

I f*ckin' LOVE Steve vai.. Don't get me wrong.. he's still awesome!! But with this one-sided video one tends to forget the stuff that Skunk and Guthrie played!.. Those two are the actual hero's imo for this video.. Just close your eyes and filter the biased video for a sec.. DAMN this was awesome :D

It’s all opinion they’re both great players but guthrie undoubtedly has a better command over the fretboard. It’s like comparing slash and steve vai. You can have your preferences and they’re both great, but one (steve) has better technique and sheer playing ability.

Guthrie plays everything, but his playing is generic for its kind. Honestly he does things that already exist. In Asia so many guitarists are like him. While Vai is special because he develops styles. If you kids serious to compare, compare with knowledge

Depends on where the person recording was standing. Probably very close to Vai’s amp I would suspect.
Anyone with a negative comment on this is a complete idiot. Vai and Guthrie are among the best guitarists in world today and Baxter is an icon with great ability. Throw in Vernon and this is a classic. To criticize any one of these guys is just stupid. I only wish I get the chance to see Vai and Guthrie together in my life time. Say what you want about Vai's demeanor but none of this would happen without him. He is the one who puts all these collaborations together.

@@DaveDexterMusic It's nothing like that. Guthrie Govan, for example, doesn't strike me as a guy who enjoys being a frontman. On the Aristocrats it's usually Brian doing most of the talking. Govan loves playing in front of an audience, but he's happy to be a part of an ensemble, which is really apparent in how he talks about his band (he mentioned how the fun in The Aristocrats isn't looking at each member in isolation, but in how they interact with each other). Vai on the other hand enjoys being a frontman and has been performing as a solo artist with a backing band for decades. So it's only natural that he'll take the lead and be upfront, and I'm sure Govan is okay with that. You can see that in how they move in stage too, Govan will usually stay in the same spot through an entire gig, focused on his guitar and his bandmates, while Vai loves dancing around as he plays, acting as more of a visual spectacle.

Sound quality of this video sucks! However? I can still hear, (barley) those great guitar solos. Vernon's solo kicked so much ass! Along with Steve, Guthrie, and the Skunk. Hard to get great results with a cell phone video, or whatever you used. But it was an amazing Jam otherwise.

I have seen other guitarist suffer from no volume when performing with Vai, Zak Wylde is one that comes to mind. I know this wouldn't happen to me. I would have multiple split signals and be hard wired. Each switch I hit would would loop another 100watt head.

Good God. Well, hey, I don't know what I was expecting. Do any of you who sat through this video seriously want to say that you find this funky? First off, genuinely funky grooves are rarely so FAST, nor so static rhythmically. It needed more contrast, more dynamics, and more counterpoint. Go listen to Cold Sweat, Cissy Strut, Sly's In Time - now, that shit is funky. Heads will be moving. This is Dave Weckl funk, or GIT funk. Not my bag, at ALL.

There is nothing like cell phone audio, its sooooo f*cking great. The tones I was hearing from all these guys, I mean, why even bother to go see bands live when you have this awesome cell phone audio right hear on TH-cam. So many thanks for uploading this wonderful sounding, best audio I think I have ever heard in my entire lifetime, so much better than a professionally mixed live performance, why bother when you have this so great cell phone audio.........
