Though in the public's eye, few have impressed me like Guthrie as well. In terms of musicality in the guitar world, I think of John Petrucci, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Paul Gilbert to name a few. Though, everyone plays so different, I could never say anyone of them is better than another. We can all shine!

This is a great lesson. Strumming is percussive/rhythmic already (even more so on acoustic guitar) and this gave me a path to move even more in that direction. Cheers!
Guthrie is a true innovator. I thought new guitar techniques were "done" and that the goal was to be creative with what we have. Then I discovered this cat a few years ago.
I think personally and from experience of trying to get fast 16th note triplets to sound good, you really need to hone your general rhythm abilities to the point where you can implement that 32nd note burst without thinking about the rhythm or timing too much, because otherwise everytime you anticipate the burst you will lock up slightly. It needs to be as automatic as walking

I think his hand moves just a little to keep the muting consistent. That's what it looks like anyway.

if you find it hard to get the pick over the strings, try using the dull corner of your pick first.
