    We use slog2 for day time shooting and cine 4 for our 4K low light situations and both profiles have their settings customized

  • @ImJasonAnthony
    @ImJasonAnthony 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Hey brother awesome video. I think honestly as a filmmaker knowing WHEN to use which profile is most important. I switch between Slog-2, Cine4, and no picture profile depending on what the lighting and situation consists of. It's always situational with circumstances!

    • @ImJasonAnthony
      @ImJasonAnthony 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to keep in mind it's not always up to you as the creator to pick the song. The client specifically wanted the track and you always have to make sure that they are happy. I have a video on my IG of Lucacris getting his hair cut with a hip hop track too. Sometimes it's not always up to you on what flies. I agree personally with the song but hey he was happy and at the end of the day thats all that matters in my opinion. Appreciate the feedback.

    I actually use HLG3 and found it to be as easy to grade as cine4 but HLG3 has a lot more dynamic range.
    With regards to the "colors" "cinema" look... You can change that... Or drop a LUT

    • @fugitivephilo
      @fugitivephilo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      precisely. if you want cinematic look baked-in, then adjust the PP settings (plus don't forget: lighting, set, design). me, I'd prefer the best dynamic range with least noise, so I can play with looks in post. for that, SLOG2 and HLG3, proper colour grade, and then a two step LUT process for film emulation. it all depends on your process and how much time you want to spend in post creating the look.

  • @RichardsWorld
    @RichardsWorld 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you use the LUTs made by Sony themselves it is very easy to get SLOG2 and SLOG3 right about where you want it . Just apply the LUT and it magically looks like regular video, then you adjust it to your liking.

    Brandon, I see you're getting comfortable with settings now. That's great! Cody Blue cine 4 is indeed a great picture profile.
    I recommend you try Josh Yeo's picture profile for low light. Hands down, the best picture profile for Sony A7III. Tested with noise plugins and everything. Cheers!

    Concerning your HLG-footage: You have to overwrite the color space in Final Cut Pro if you don't want your footage to be blown out. You can find it in the inspector under "information" and then go with "settings". Overwrite the colorspace there. For me Rec2020 works the best, but my settings for my HLG profile differ from yours. But Im pretty sure, that you would get a better highlight rolloff after overwriting the colorspace. Give it a try :)

    All of this is fascinating and I’m trying to get a grip on all the options. I’m so use to using a standard setting because I shot with Canon and I never really thought about changing it much, other than some contrast and saturation. But now I’m heading more into Sony and having so many profile options as well as grading or applying a LUT, it’s a lot to take in. For those of us who are less well versed in altering profiles and applying corrections or LUTs, anything additional clarity you can provide is appreciated. :-)

  • @ManjunathSharma
    @ManjunathSharma 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Yes. I also use the Cody blue's custom cine 4. But I highly recommend you to try HLG 2 like Jason wong did with little tweaks in profile like cine 4. Trust me you wouldn't need any luts. Straight out of camera fantastic colors. Great dynamic range and well preserved shadows.
    Thanks for video mate.

  • @focusonwhymedia

    Thanks for making this video man. I haven't seen a lot of videos comparing the different PPs straight out of camera then editing them. This is super helpful. Its been very annoying trying to find a video that compares all of them. And so many chat rooms swearing by one vs the other without backing it up with footage or an explanation. Anyways. i've subscribed and looking forward to any sony a7iii videos you may post in the future. thanks man !

    appreciate your opinion man. The only Problem I see is, that with Cine 4 although you don't have to do so much work, your not as free in your choice when it comes to luts or the Look in General cause you've already got more colours etc. in your shot than with Log for example.

  • @storyfrontier
    @storyfrontier 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Log is best for scenes with very bright and dark areas. I.e. high dynamic range. Generally I've used slog2/3 for the last 3 years and it's easily the best profile. In night time too. But you just need to know how to expose. ETTR. It takes proper testing to get used to it.

    • @fugitivephilo
      @fugitivephilo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      me too. I've found HLG3 to be a solid contender to SLOG2 tho. give it a shot.

    for all you guys out there that just starting out don't waste your time - go with cine4, it has least work to it and besides a7iii works best if you don't color grade too much anyway cause its 8bit.

  • @nixolo86
    @nixolo86 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video mate, the only thing that I don't understand is why do you put a slope +2 on a cine4? Doing this you are cutting DR in the HighLights, probably 1 stop

    Great video Brandon! Subbed! I primarily use HLG3 using Scott Jeschke's settings. I find it to be the most versatile in most situations, day and night. Also, I use Davinci Resolve that allows me to specify the input color space that matches the HLG profile and output to Rec709. I pretty much don't have to do anything to it at that point other than minor tweaks that I might want to change for a look.

    Cine4 and Pro would be the best colors on any Sony cameras that can only do 8-bit colors. With a7Siii, a7IV, a1 and FX3 that are all 10-bit, Slog-2 & Slog-3 are so much better to use now because of the more range of colors to play with.

    Cine4/pro is my go-to for my a6500. Im done experimenting with all other profiles and i keep coming backing to this as it is the most versatile to grade. Also matches comparably to canon footage albeit the green-magenta tint inherent in sony sensors
