Question - Pallets are really dusty and dirty. Planing just looks like new lumber with nail holes, and sanding often leaves the dirt in the grain. What is the best way to clean the wood so you can retain the rustic, weathered look, so you can sell something that has hundreds of miles of road dirt on them?
Great question! While I didn't take the time to clean the pallet used in this project, one option you have is to disassemble and thoroughly power-wash the lumber. Then you would leave it out in warm weather to dry, and assuming the wood is already characteristically rustic/weathered, you now have clean, rustic, weathered wood. Another option is to create an artificial weathered look. When we want new or newish lumber to have a weathered look, we start with a 1:1 mix of white paint and water. Coat once or twice, depending on how weathered it should look. Follow that up with a coat of Minwax Provincial stain, wiping it off with a rag after it's been on roughly 10 minutes (might help to have someone follow behind you and wipe the Provincial off). My wife and I have a video coming soon where we demonstrate this artificial weathered look approach on a bed frame build with brand new lumber. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
