@FordTechMakuloco i watched another video, with timing cover removed, there was no need to remove the roller follower to replace cam phasers and chains. I'm at the point of removing the chains. do i really need to remove the followers?
FordTechMakuloco will it be off time if i spin crankshaft? Both chains were on , already time before i spon it just to have clearance to put the rest of roller followers. Will i have to put it back at 6 oclock? After spining it ?
FordTechMakuloco i just got a 99 lightning engine setup for my 03 fx4..I'm doing timing and adjusters and followers..i found oem cobra set for good deal..are all rockers the same? M 6529 svt rockers..also are all adjusters the same?? Thanks. I can't find good info on this anywhere..u rock!! Love ur work...
Saving my ass when I lost overdrive now saving me when I'm about to do a full timing job. Your knowledge on these motors is unparalled and we're all grateful that you share it with us
Dear FordTechMakuloco this is just an update on the Expedition in the video .The motor is running great just hit 183k and still runs like the day i bought it .I maintain it religiously , Thanks Again for your great work
Same here. Not sure why theirs so much hate on the 5.4. Just hit 200K miles on mine and still runs great. However every 3 months or so I end up replacing something. Alternator, pulley bearings, starter, ignition coils.... Always something to fix but the engine itself is great. After seeing this video i'm not going to attempt replacing these roller followers but am definitely taking it to a mechanic to replace.
I could literally never understand another mechanic and I’m a woman but the knowledge and experience this man has along with the detail he provides is just amazing. I’m actually so happy I’ve found your channel 😅
You are the MAN!!! I have a 2009 f 150 with 200 thousand miles and was told I needed a new engine. Did timing job myself. She’s purring like a kitten. I could not have done it without your video! Thank you!!!!!
I have a 2008 Ford Expedition. I was blessed to have come across your page on TH-cam to better educate me on this motor. You REALLY helped me out. I spent a while looking places up, took your advice on a lot of things to look at for at dealerships so I drove to Orlando to get the roller followers, camshafts (if needed) and timing done. I was going to get the updated oil pump too. In Miami I was quoted 4,500 and in Orlando I was quoted $2,700, both at Ford dealerships…Orlando being the cheapest. Once the tech looked at the truck I was told I have metal shavings in my oil filter and said that I need a new motor because the motor is eating itself from the inside out. They did not open the motor at all. I requested prior to coming up here that I wanted to see whatever the tech finds but there was no communication. Now I am headed back to Miami to another dealership for a second opinion. I sure wish I was near Chicago brother, you would definitely done my motor over/replaced it. It’s so hard finding people that’ll do it right! Thanks for all those videos my friend. Any advice will help out.
As long as the engine oil was maintained you will be ok with just a timing job. Fine metal in the filter would be the result of the chain hitting the front cover like they all do, no big deal. $2,700 sounds way too low like they are not replacing everything, $4,500 sounds right for a dealer. I even charge $3,500 to $4k with all the extras as an independent.
@@willcountypowersports6338camshaft has to come out to replace lash adjusters/lifters. Ask me how I know. Being a Ford diesel tech, I’m not having a good time working on a 5.4 😂
I am doing a timing chain, cam phaser job with new lifters and roller rockers. I had a huge problem trying to remove the old followers on some of the cylinders following your guidance. I ended up having to remove the cam shafts to get them all out. I though maybe the chain had slipped and caused the cam lobes to be too far from the base circle to get them out and I didnt want too risk popping off keepers or other damage. After following all your steps for timing chain and phaser replacement will all Ford parts and having replaced all the lifters before reinstalling the cams, I then started to reinstall the followers and once again was having difficulty putting them in. Finally after struggling through 3 of them I inspected the genuine OTC 6684 tool that I had purchased from a defunct Ford Dealership selling off tools, I found that the part that pushes the valve down was bent! It wasnt real obvious but it was enough to only allow the valve to be depressed partially. So I carefully straightened out the tool and it was like magic. All those follower went in with no trouble. Just goes to show how careful you are to do it right some things just go wrong. Im just happy to have it resolved. I will be done with the job tommorrow. Im 68 years old and a retired Ford Tech, but I havent done major engine work for decades as I specialized in electrical/electronics/AC/ etc. Thanks for all your great videos and guidance.
By far the most thorough and detailed mechanic videos made! And the most honest mechanic out there. Thanks for taking the time to shoot and post these videos. You've helped us owners more than you know.
Great video thanks! I missed the "very important part" about pushing as you compress the spring. A bit of stomach in the throat moment when I saw a keeper fall as I lifted out the rocker. Luckily the tool had shifted a bit and the spring was pushing the valve sideways preventing it from falling into the cylinder. With some strong magnets, a little pry to center the top, I managed to get it all back together, released the tension to make sure the keepers were seated and then recompressed it to put the new rocker in.
I bought a 2005 f150 Lariat with 136k miles that was in great shape, but had a misfire when I test drove it and also a tick. I first did the spark plugs and coils and found all but 2 were loose and one had the end broke off. It drove better but still didn’t have power and felt like it was still misfiring and ticking . I then decided to change all the roller followers and lash adapters. I took the valve covers off and found my problem, it was a roller follower locked up and the cam had been just grinding away on it on the right side of my engine. After replacing my cam, roller followers, and lash adapters my truck runs like new. I couldn’t have done it without your amazing videos!
Mark, I quit fighting to get each individual rocker fished out. I remove the camshaft. The cam phaser more than likely needs to replaced as a regular maintenance item anyway. Laying across the fender doing it 12 times gets old. Usually it can be done 30 minutes faster. That adds up to an hour total. Thanks for the educational videos!
Rookie mistake... I placed a towel near the phaser to prevent anything from falling down into the pan. Placed another towel on top and cleaned up all gasket material and dirt. Started working and was stumped why the engine was so hard to turn over with 18mm. Realized I forgot to remove the towel and binded it up in the phaser, chain, etc. Slowly cutaway material and turned the motor over manually until I could pull the towel out of the teeth. Hopefully I did not stretch the chain or throw off timing. Guess I will be doing complete timing job next. Still can't believe I did that... thank you for the great video!
Get the OEM valve spring tool! I tried to save a buck and the cheaply made knock off I bought was garbage and didn't work. You're already saving money by doing this job yourself so bite the bullet and get the right tool. Rent it if you can. Also thanks so much for this video. I learn so much and have saved so much money by doing repairs myself. Merry Christmas and take care.
That seems less frustrating than replacing the passenger exhaust manifold! I have no ticking at 181k, but I think I'm ready to tackle this job when I do. Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic tutorial. My 2011 Expedition sounded like a diesel and had lost power under acceleration. Figured it was timing related or something else. Used a stethoscope to figure out where the sound was coming from, it was loudest at the rear most passenger side roller follower. Turns out one roller follower was completely seized and the other 2 on that back cylinder weren't too far behind it. I figure it wasn't too couldn't have been too far from grenading itself completely. Great tutorial and the tool recommendations were very helpful to be able to swap out the roller followers... Saved me from spending $$$ at a shop or worse yet, having to replace the vehicle completely.
Thanks again for the great videos. I had a bad clacking noise on our 2012 Expedition. Took the cover off and found the rear most, passenger side, roller follower seized up just like the one in your other video. Swapped it out and purrs like new. Thank you!!
Yes, u definitely don't want to pop those rollers out with anything else because you will bend a valve. Always use this tool to install the rollers. Good job!
Thank you so much for these videos. Your description and camera work are excellent. I'm working on my first Triton 5.4, with the dreaded valve ticking, so this is just what I needed. Thank you again!
Dude your the best you showed how to do it without removal of head or engine. This saves us big I’m eyeing 1 2008 f150 fx4 with the 5.4 I think I’ll buy it it’s at 1800 with out the auction fees. I’m not scared no more.
its been @7,000 miles since doing my timing job after watching your vids, its running great!i bought the tool from ford racing to compress the springs,it did work, but almost need 3 hands to use it and it has a set screw with a little allen wrench to lock it into place, way to complicated, should of got that one from otc, so much easier
Extremely informative, my mechanic is extremely happy I showed him this because he’s been having nightmares knowing this job was being started today lol THANK YOU!
FTM made me feel confident enough to tear my 05 150 down for full timing, phasers, oil/water pumps, new roller followers. Popped the V Cover and found D side (Bank 2?) Phaser looked like it had exploded. Pass side tensioner completely blown. Yet never had a worry bc I knew my man here would guide me through.
I know this is an older video, but if you are doing a full timing chain job, it seems to me it would be easier just to pull the camshafts out to change the followers rather to going through the whole spring compression routine. If you are only changing one follower, yeah, I see the spring compression method being the better choice. I love your videos and have helped me my F150 in tip top shape. Hopefully I would not have to do this job to it. Keep them coning.
@@cesarmejia4751 following the timing job video you have to take 3 out each head, then the camshaft can move freely and the rollers are not putting pressure on any valves.
thank you soo much for doing this video I am just getting into being a technician and my first job I am doing is a Cam phaser delete kit on my own 2005 F-250 supper duty 5.4L and this video plus the one you have on removing the cam phasers has helped me a lot and saved me sooo much anger, I even went and asked my local ford dealer if they would loan the tool to me and they said come on down and get it no charge, so thank you very much for putting this video out to the world.
Now a video comes out a month after i replace mine haha. You are the man for making these videos. Im 19 and did a full timing chain job for my 5.4. Even replaced the roller followers and lash adjusters. You saved me a lot of money. Both tentioner gaskets were completely destroyed.
After watching your videos, it sounds like the melling high volume pump and oem timing kit must happen eventually. Was debating just replacing roller/follower and adjusters. Thanks to your videos I will attempt full timing kit and vcts ensuring the new roller/followers, adjusters, and existing cams last another 175k. Definitely supporting your channel and will order a shirt or hoodie🤙 Thank you @Fordtechmakuloco
Looks like a very good but tedious procedure was wondering could you take the camshaft off and then just remove all the roller followers one after the other? What would a full timing job involve? I know this guy is the man when it comes to Fords there is no better !every one of his videos is right on point I’ve used a few of them to work on the IEW four-wheel air vacuum system thanks to his videos I was able to straighten it out finding out that the tubes had fallen apart and disintegrated as well as his videos on changing the CV axle excellent instructions and details I’ve done things on my truck that I don’t even wanna know about this point thanks to his videos! “He Is the man!”
There just isn't enough time in the day for you to advise everyone and still get these projects done so I don't know how you pull it off. You might want to think about just being a Video/Phone 5.4l consultant. I would gladly pay $20 for your 5 minutes of sound advise.
Good info Brian. With 170,000 miles on mine, I'll soon be doing the Phasers, chains, chain guides, plugs(ugh), exhaust studs. This looks like a great time to do the roller followers too.
When doing a complete timing job. Can you remove all the follower when at base lob, or must you first remove the 6 followers first to get to neutral position and then remove remainder followers?
thanks for spending time Brian educating mechanics that don't get factory ford info it is much appreciated i have been a ford man a long time and there is always something new to learn
@fordtechmakuloco Just wanted to say thank you for the video. Not only did your video save me thousands of dollars from the dealership, but it also helped give me some quality time with my grandpa. He and I followed your instructions today in fixing my 2010 5.4 three valve. Thanks for the help you put out.
You're my kind of guy. I want to replace me 2001 Ford Lightning engine and you're someone I would totally trust to do it. I just wished you lived in my area.
As always, love the channel, and your attention to detail. You my friend are top notch! Thank you for your continued effort to keep us 5.4 3v guys going. My 2005 F-150 is still going strong thanks in part to your video’s
@@FordTechMakuloco Putting together the parts list based on what you are recommending. Definitely has the famous roller follower tick so I'll be pulling it apart shortly and upgrading the oil pump while I'm at it
If the roller followers have such a small hole now compared to the original ones, would that be a good argument on keeping using the 5W20 oil rather than switching to 5W30 again because of the small holes in the revised lash adjusters?
I watch lots of your videos and I know my truck needs cam phasers. The job just looks so intimidating and I do not want to take to a shop so they could drain my wallet out. Guess I’ll have to man up at some point and start the process. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, pray for me! Lol
Martin Rodriguez I’m currently in the process of doing the timing chain replacement on 2007 5.4L 3V Expedition, it is intimidating and slightly overwhelming at times. But with this video, his 4 stage videos on timing chain replacement, this job is doable, and will save you a lot of money.
And after all the followers are installed, in what position do you leave the crankshaft keyway, and you remember those 6 designated roller followers we took out at the beginning of the timing chain 4 parts series? Do we install those 6 at very last or it doesn't matter the order the roller followers go in
Hello I just want to say u are awesome I love watching all ur videos of u fixing Ford F-150. I am doing a timing job on my 2006 Ford F-150 Fx4 5.4 I am watching ur video just Kind of confused putting in the roller followers at the end
I have a very desperate question and have been chasing the dreaded vct solenoid issue, just a little history behind the situation,I have a 2008 f150 5.4, I was driving down the road and lost all power and had a bad knock, well I found that my head on the right hand side suffered a catastrophic failure and ate the camshaft of what looked like it was from lack of oil so then the fun begins of course, I replaced the head with a reman from Napa, I watched all your videos on the 5.4 3v it seems lol so I checked and changed the vct solenoids with ford parts, the phasers and timing chains and guides, and tensioner, all ford, I replaced the oil pump with the 360hv oil pump, I also went as far as checking the thrust washers and even though they looked very good I replaced them. I have removed both the mounting plates for the solenoids as well, found a piece of debris in the one one the right hand side which I believe lead to the failure of the head but not 100% sure, now I have the solenoid issue and I can make it act up of course hot and bumping the gas in gear, but when I go to the solenoid and unplug it it don't change but if I unplug only the right hand side and run it it won't fail. As I stated everything is new and clean am I missing something or could it just be a faulty new solenoid?
@@littlemirage If the roller followers are installed in the cylinder head and you start loosening the camshaft caps, you will put uneven pressure/stress on the camshaft. Imaging holding a small twig at one end. Now touch the other end to the ground and begin to press the end on the ground. The twig will begin to bend and eventually snap somewhere in the middle. Hope that analogy helps.
These videos are the best available for Ford modular V8 engines. I have the tick sound from the roller followers, gonna change them. Should I do a whole timing kit with upgraded oil pump? Have about a 130k miles on this motor. Thanks for your great work!
I didn’t really have to do my timing till about 350K on my 2014 Expedition. For now I would just replace any loose/jiggly roller followers at this point.
Thank you for this! I have an ever so slight tick in my 5.4L 3V and I think it's a roller follower, so this might be a job in my future... I still am not 100% certain it's a roller follower though, nor am I sure it's even worth being concerned over
If you have a slight tick, it's time to have it checked. When the roller follower wears enough to turn its' self sideways the engine damage can be catastrophic and a new engine will be the only repair.
@@chriscall3425 Lash adjusters are under the roller followers which are under the cam. You can remove the roller followers without removing the cam but the lash adjusters do not have the clearance to be removed without removing the cam. So, they ARE under the cam.
Had broken cam follower on the #7 cylinder, Ford Dealer said there were two repair options: 1. Replace the cam follower $600 2. Replace the motor for $10,000 (FYI the 5.4 is only $1500 at Rock Auto and most mechanics will charge about $1500 in labor to replace the motor) 👉🏻Claiming he couldn’t determine if the Cam has been scarred by the broken follower, the dealer recommended option 2. 👉🏻I chose option 1 and it was the right choice.
I swear the dealerships are getting sketchier and sketchier, they recommend shit like money grows on trees and like telling customers a motor is toast when it is not like that won't hurt Fords reputation, and cause a long time Ford customer to look else where, it is amazing to me. Ford MoCo needs to get a tighter grip on these clowns.
I think he mentioned in the other video to replace them all. Make sense - it takes a bit of work to get to one, another hour to replace the rest that’s a minimal effort.
Thanks to you i managed to get my timing done on my 13 expedition! I did have a big question though in regards to oil pressure. Where you talk about the hole in the new roller followers, and how it differs from the original, how much of a difference would it make? Reason i ask is, after flipping through tons of forums and comments i ended up going with the melling m340hv pump, given at the time of install it was closing in on 200k and all sources i was reading were saying how much more benefit the higher volume would be. Now that ill be going back in to get these adjusters and arms done, i want to make sure that increased pressure wouldnt cause more harm than good. Thanks for all you do!
Thanks for everything Brian, when reinstalling I should just start with all of the lobes at base circle 6 o’clock on the crank hub then rotate to the next group? No issues with piston position and fully opened valves?
Once camshaft is neutral (after pulling the 6 roller followers with the described method), can you just take off the whole camshaft first, and then pull all roller followers out?
Brian great work again....caution****you may know already but if anyone plans to replace the cam and lash adjusters in a 2004 5.4 there for some reason different than later year models. Something with the top tip of the lash adjusters and machine lugs on the cam. I'll look for the write up and send it to you. I think followers are the same
FordTechMakuloco Have you done a clip on bank 1 o2 sensor R&R for 2004+ f150's? I'm completely stumped on that one. And I thought the ps pump was the problem child. Thanks
I got a set of these ford rockers and on some of them the hole isn't all the way through.. I checked by trying to shine a light through and push a pin needle in.. It just doesn't work... i am glad i noticed this before installing them all... could have burnt up another rocker and cam lobe.
When it comes to turning the over a 5.4 engine , if you have the crankshaft damper pulley off the best way is to use a socket that is actually made for a sbc engine. Sounds weird but apparently the modular ford engines use the same size crank snout and keyway as a small block Chevy. A socket that comp cams makes that is designed to be used when degreeing a camshaft makes it so nice. If you're working on these engines a lot it's well worth the money.
So I'm not arguing how this is done, but wouldn't it be easier, and safer to pull the camshaft out and replace them all? Or is this the solution to replacing just one? Timing job is due on my v8 triton with 238k.
I'm glad you pointed out the re-design on the follower cam lobe oiler hole. Just got in a new set and at first glance I thought Ford forgot to drill out the hole. You can clearly see the pin hole on the outside, but the pin hole on the lash adjuster side is not as visible at first glance. The bore is at an angle now to better aim the oil at the lobe and the follower bearing. Question though, since the new design has been in use for 5+ years now, have seen any issues with the pin hole getting clogged causing oil starvation on the lobe and follower bearing? I'll be installing my second Ford Performance follower/lash adjuster kit on my '06 Mustang GT 4.6L 3V. Just turned 300k and have been noticing ticking at start up until engine runs for a couple of minutes. Last replacement was at 175k along with a complete timing job and Melling standard volume pump.
I'm watching this video again before doing it myself. I Want to change the lash adjusters and roller followers on my mustang gt I with the 4.6l 3 valve engine. Could I use this procedure to remove all the followers and lash adjusters and replace them individually? Or do I need to raise the camshaft to replace the lash adjusters. Thanks you so much for sharing your knowledge I have so many of your videos on my Playlist.
Love the videos you have so much good information thank you. So my 05 navigator 5.4 3 valve just stated with the problem I took the valve cover off and cylinder 2 roller folower came loose and scuffed my cam. Where can I purchase a new camshaft and roller flowers. Thank you
The 4.6L 3V engine in my '06 Stang has developed a tick which has gotten louder over time. I put a stethoscope on the valve covers, but that didn't seem to reveal much. I'm suspecting either a follower or lash adjuster. Another issue I'm experiencing is increased oil consumption so I'm suspecting either guides or seals. At this point I'm wondering if I should just bite the bullet and spring for reconditioned heads.
I have the 4G 692 engine and will follow your advice on changing the followers, oil pump, phasers and possibly the cam. However, I'm concerned about getting the correct parts for this engine. What parts are the same with the 5G and what parts do I need to be cautious in ordering? Great videos.
Hello I watched part 1-4 for the 5.4 3v timing chain replacement now for the roller followers can I use after market and if yes do you recommend any brand
Great Vid!!! I now can remove and install Roller Followers. However I have I that I can not get to budge!! Any Ideals?? Please help!!! I'm following your 4pt Timing Chain kit replacement!!!
Hey Y'all. Love the videos! Contemplating doing the whole timing chain repair. I have an 2004 with the 5.4 3v with 130K. Been ticking for awhile. DId the phasers back in 2010 when the thought was that the phasers were the issue. I was wondering, do the lash adjusters need to be replaced? I planned on doing the whole timing chain, phasers, solenoids, tensioners, oil pump, rocker followers. Should I also replace the lash adjusters? Also are the cams known to go bad? That would add another $1500 to the cost. Part of me wonders if I shouldn't just try to buy a used 2011 or later truck!
Awesome Video @fordtechmakuloco!!! I'm about to do the complete timing. And installing new Roller Followers, Camshaft and lash adjusters. I saw somewhere where you need to prime the lash adjusters. Are you familiar with that??
Hello and thank you for this video and all of your videos, they are always detailed and high quality. I have a 2010 Ford Expedition that I took on the task of replacing the roller followers starting on the drivers side. The motor is still in place and so very difficult to manage. Last part i have is the four remaining followers where the valve spring is on the bottom side, and seems impossible to use the tool from the top. any tips or tricks? I thought of removing my front wheel and maybe coming in from the side. The cowling is there as well so hopefully does not get in the way. Thoughts? Thanks in advance. John
Great video, is it possible to change out the lash adjusters without removing the camshaft? Im in the middle of mine now and the lash adjuster doesnt have enough clearence to come out, any way around this? Also if i do take the camshaft out do instill need the valve compression tool to remove roller followers? Thanks in advance
Thank you for the videos! I have went through all 4 parts of the timing job videos, I am at the very end and my crank wheel and belt are back on , you say after all that to go ahead and install all 24 rollers in part 4, how do I get the roller followers in that are not at the bay circle?? I’m unable to turn my crank with my socket anymore . Unfortunately I seen this video after watching part 4 and getting to this point now. Will the springs compress enough to get all of them in with the cams in one position ?
Love watching your video. They have helped me wint my 5.4 3 valve many times. Also like that you don't make us dizzy trying to work with one hand and video with the other. I do have a question, if you don't mind. Will that spring compressor work on the 2.3/2.5 dual plug heads as well? Thanks again for sharing
Brian, you keep mentioning about the roller followers, but not say too much about the lash adjusters. How critical is replacing the lash adjusters, and is it much easier to do then roller followers? Im going to be doing this real soon before Michigan weather gets cold. Thank you for all you do for us.
@@FordTechMakuloco Hey Brian Thanks for the videos they are a great help. I'm doing a full timing set but didn't order followers. Is this something you do on every job or what determines if you change them or not? Thanks a bunch.
Thanks for the video Makuloko although one things you mentioned on the new rollerfollower you installed that the hole in the roller follower was bigger on the old one than the new.Wouldnt it be better if the hole was bigger in the new one so oil passage could flow easier and if so why install the one that has a smaller hole.

@@FordTechMakuloco I really appreciate you getting back to me brother. Means a lot .
@@FordTechMakuloco am I able to remove the lifter one I removed the follower? Mines making a tapping sound and I would want to replace both. Thanks
Holy smoke, I would have pooped my pants. Great job.
Wow!. This is by biggest concern. You got lucky. Glad it worked out.
Yeah.... a really important part of the procedure...
Were there any tricks to replacing the entire camshaft? Sounds like it is worth the extra $
Threw P0017 code.
So sorry to hear that bro !
Did you fix it by doing the complete timing chain job ?
Man your videos are so clear and you explain it very well. Thank you, you give me confidence doing work on my f150
Thank you again!

i'd rather soak them to make sure oil gets to the pin
YEA I THOUGHT THE SAME THING 24 HR PRIOR.
When can i take cam shaft out? At tdc or after taking 3 out on each head
@@cesarmejia4751 following the timing job video you have to take 3 out each head, then the camshaft can move freely and the rollers are not putting pressure on any valves.

@@FordTechMakuloco can you replace the lash adjusters on a 06 mustang 3v without cam removal?
Does a selenoid makes a ticking noise (like roller follower?) on 2008 5.4 3V. Thank you

Uneven pressure on cam
@@FordTechMakuloco how do you know if you have uneven pressure on camshaft? What do you recommend if there is?
@@littlemirage If the roller followers are installed in the cylinder head and you start loosening the camshaft caps, you will put uneven pressure/stress on the camshaft.
Imaging holding a small twig at one end. Now touch the other end to the ground and begin to press the end on the ground. The twig will begin to bend and eventually snap somewhere in the middle. Hope that analogy helps.
@@5rand0n7 Why can't I just loosen each cap screw a coupe times in sequence? Would be silly to remove each cap in order as that would stress the cam.
You can change these roller followers in a parking garage on a vacation. I know this for a fact.
Thank you for this! I have an ever so slight tick in my 5.4L 3V and I think it's a roller follower, so this might be a job in my future... I still am not 100% certain it's a roller follower though, nor am I sure it's even worth being concerned over
If there is a tick in a 5.4, YES it is worth considering.
And the 4.6 3 valve as well.
If you have a slight tick, it's time to have it checked. When the roller follower wears enough to turn its' self sideways the engine damage can be catastrophic and a new engine will be the only repair.
Great video sir! By any chance, are u in the LA area so u can change my followers? My truck has been having that annoying clicking sound.

Is that enough room to remove the hydraulic lash adjuster with that tool in the way
You probably already figured this out but the lash adjusters can not be removed without removing the cam shafts.
@@neptune4167 why do you need to remove the cam? They aren't under the cam.
@@chriscall3425 Lash adjusters are under the roller followers which are under the cam. You can remove the roller followers without removing the cam but the lash adjusters do not have the clearance to be removed without removing the cam. So, they ARE under the cam.
Had broken cam follower on the #7 cylinder, Ford Dealer said there were two repair options:
1. Replace the cam follower $600
2. Replace the motor for $10,000 (FYI the 5.4 is only $1500 at Rock Auto and most mechanics will charge about $1500 in labor to replace the motor)
👉🏻Claiming he couldn’t determine if the Cam has been scarred by the broken follower, the dealer recommended option 2.
I know someone who paid 3500 for Powertrain reman, and another 3000 for install.

Great video. Do you suggest changing them all or just the noisy ones?
Great Video, Any idea how to check which one failed without removing them?
Thanks for everything Brian, when reinstalling I should just start with all of the lobes at base circle 6 o’clock on the crank hub then rotate to the next group? No issues with piston position and fully opened valves?
Once camshaft is neutral (after pulling the 6 roller followers with the described method), can you just take off the whole camshaft first, and then pull all roller followers out?
Brian great work again....caution****you may know already but if anyone plans to replace the cam and lash adjusters in a 2004 5.4 there for some reason different than later year models. Happy Thanksgiving Brain. Thanks for all your videos and valuable information on the 5.4 3 v it's very much appreciated.
Never any issues so far.
I'm watching this video again before doing it myself. I Want to change the lash adjusters and roller followers on my mustang gt I with the 4.6l 3 valve engine. I still got a Question: What happend when you dont push down onto the Followers? I dont get that…
The 4.6L 3V engine in my '06 Stang has developed a tick which has gotten louder over time.

I’m unable to turn my crank with my socket anymore . Unfortunately I seen this video after watching part 4 and getting to this point now. Will the springs compress enough to get all of them in with the cams in one position ?
