Hey, I feel called out! According to Gao Ying's books, I should be drawing 33" (just behind my ear), but for all other styles I draw to my earlobe, 30".
@@HistoricalWeapons 5'11" - although my arms are a bit longer than usual, apparently. I've since revised my "short" draw to 29", anchoring at the cheek bone, after watching an interview with Bede Dwyer on Mamluk archery. And I just double checked my measurements according to Gao Ying and yep, 33" 🙂
I’m 5’11 bare feet and my max is 36 so I also agree with you that average people back then cannot draw 36” . More importantly medieval Changshao artwork depict more of a 29” -31” draw anyways
I had an af archery han bow, my one broke unfortunately. I had proper weighted arrows, strung it properly, didn't over draw but yeah one of the limbs cracked unfortunately. I have heard of other people experiencing this with the AF Han bow as well, must just be the one bow in particular.
I’m sorry yours broke. Have you tried contacting them about warranty? It’s rare that a fibreglass bow breaks at the fiberglass bar. Normally they break at the siyah; Worse case without warranty which you can replace it yourselves or convert it into a short draw bow with small siyahs
@@HistoricalWeapons Oh it was at the attachment part near the handle unfortunately. Yeah it's crazy because i've heard so many people with the exact same bow last for years and years, still in mint condition. Yeah I think i might un-wrap it and see what's going on aye underneath the leather/string. Maybe salvageable. Good video though man! Great shooting.
@@jkcbrah4708 if it’s a vertical crack you could soak in epoxy and wrap with fishing line or many layers of nylon string . If the draw weight is light enough should work. Of course I assume only if af archery decides to not give u a replacement
@@HistoricalWeapons hardout, i might have to look into that glue option actually. Yeah they said they could send replacement if I pay 90 dollar shipping so nawww haha. Appreciate the tip though, i'll give that a go.
Great point about the draw length, Jack. Modern archers sometimes overlook or fail to consider the differences in human dimensions between modern and historical periods. Given that humans today are, on average, 3 inches taller, it logically follows that historic draw lengths (on average), would be a little shorter compared to those of modern archers.
Gotbone almost 7yrs ago to start asian archery. Siyahs snapped and glues and binding began cracking from limbs after about 500 arrows. Also i ordered an 50# and got a 35#.
Kyudo arrows are 1 meter long for a reason.... @ 5"11" (180cm) my max draw length is 38" (96.52 cm) Heavy arrows penetrate more then light arrows.... so no surprise with 1250 gr arrows penetrating better then 800 gr arrows work on your back tension ... amazing things happen
Regarding heavy penetrate more it depends. Heavy shorter arrows actually penetrate better than heavy long assuming same weight same diameter . This is especially true with crossbow bolts because more stiff and less friction against shields
What is the recommended GPP for this bow. He is mentioning an arrow weight of 800 grains but that sounds a lot, event if the bow has 70lbs at 34 inc. That is beyond 11 GPP.
@HistoricalWeapons but in general, for these fiberglass bows of the Mongol, Tatar, Ming dynasty... etc. design, 10GPP is still a recommended optimum, right? I'm interested since I'm thinking of getting something in the 70lbs range that will be for training since I don't want to abuse an MR Bow Despot for months just to get used to it.
@@HistoricalWeapons You are telling me. I just got AF archery's new Han bow about the same time you reviewed it and paid a lot more. I wish I had waited, I would have ordered 2 or 3 bows in different weights and styles. This also makes laminated bows available to me with my limited budget.
Based on my understanding the price breakdown shows af archery is not making any profits selling these. They are merely trying to get rid of old stock at breaking even cost. Shipping companies and customs make money here
I have something called ''Dreake'' 25# at ''28. I use it for learn techiques and correct my bad habbits and teach beginners. The worst material quality and the worst craftmanship I saw in my whole life. My leather work specialist friend made it look nice from the outside in this year. But this is an insanely accurate bow! I shot the Turkish puta target main circles from a 100 meters metric or 109 yards both by carbon and wooden arrows. The flight archery performance is between 160 and 180 meters metric or 175 to 197 yards with target arrows. So the fundamentals of the bow core designe are working brilliantly. I just thought it is a fantasy shape. But it looks exacly the same like this one. It took a lot of punishment including dry fire caused by a broken nock and still works. By light weight and super flexibel 100 spine arrows the group is picture perfect. I am champion in 197 yards and 251 yards target shooting. Longer siyah increase leverage and allows longer draw but adds weight so they are better at shooting heavier arrow
