    Stan Hansen is what JBL always wanted to be, from the Lariat, to the bruising style of offense, the early Justin Hawk Bradshaw gimmick, to how many times he mentions Hansen on RAW

    Hearing an ol southern gentleman like Stan Hansen talk about Japanese pro wrestling so fluently is so cool. Stan had a lot of great matches in Japan, my favorites were with Inoki and Vader.

    Stan Hansen is the greatest performer in the ring I ever saw in 35 years of watching pro wrestling. The sheer intensity, action, brutal reality, all out entertaining warfare of his matches second to none. Love Corny, but I'm not sure even he knows how over Stan was in Japan. No American was over as big (not even Brody......other than maybe Terry Funk as a babyface in the early 80's), but for years Stan was #1. People talk about the greatest ever and throw out plastic people like Shawn Michaels (what a laugh)....Stan's matches weren't a joke like all those cruiserweights who couldn't beat a fly...They were to the death contests of will...He gave Andre his greatest match ever, and then could turn around against any Japanese and make anyone the best match on the card....He drew everywhere he went, in the States as well.....Even Ole mentions Stan #1 when it came to drawing folks.....But aside from everything, he was the best, most electric, badass performer in the ring I ever saw. Thanks so much to Kayfabe Commentaries and Corny for making this happen. Can't wait to order and watch. A genius in the ring, and a total class act outside it, Stan Hansen. The best imo there ever was.

      I would say Hogan also was in the same level as Vader and Hansen. I understand that the fact he became a superstar overnight in Japan, before his series of matches with Inoki, convinced Vince McMahon that he was going to be the man to take the WWF on national level.

    Stan Hansen was always different from your normal big man, he had a natural toughness about him that no one in pro wrestling at that point could really match. Especially during his time in Japan where he was not really cutting promos to get his character across, his work rate and matches really let the crowd know that this was a man not to be fucked with. That is so hard for a lot of guys these days and Hansen nailed it every single time. I hope they go deeply into his matches with Kobashi, Misawa and Vader in the 90s. Those are some of my absolute favorite matches of all time.
    I pray that Jim Cornette doesn't babble over Stan too much. I know how much he loves to talk.

    Everybody knows Hansens offense was great, but his defense, his SELLING is a bit underrated IMO. Despite being so big, he made the others guys stuff always look credible, his facial expression of pain was second to none (not that you had to do much to sell a Misawa elbow or Kawada high kick, but still LOL).

  • @williammcguire130

    wouldn't CMLL be considered the longest running "serious" wrestling promotion?

    • @williammcguire130
      @williammcguire130 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I would argue that exotico gimmicks are just as ridiculous as the really old guys working comedy matches in the undercards of many 90's AJPW shows. Hell, Baba was still main eventing shows long after his physical degradation had made all his work look ridiculous.
      But those arguments are besides the point: even if you argue that CMLL has lost its way recently, which I wouldn't but still, they were still promoting rock solid traditional lucha where guys could be fined by committee for unapproved profanity or ref bumping from the 30's to the 00's. SEVENTY YEARS. That's longer than Rikidozan and Baba's careers COMBINED.

    • @skytwohigh8721
      @skytwohigh8721 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      CMLL is fucking awesome, i love the fact that they have so much care for their single matches. Every Match is a traditional six men tag team match, and when you have a deep rivary, only than you get a singles match. It makes everything so special, they give every feud a meaning. And when the rivary is bigger than big you get an mask vs mask, hair vs mask, or hair vs hair match which is the end of a big feud. I love it.... . Big love to Atlanits and all the mexican cmll lucha guys

    2:30, when Stan talks about the bus tour. lol you know he left out the whole business with Andre The Giant and Bad News Brown/Allen right. Wonder at what point in the doc do they bring it up and how they'll avoid talking about it.
    Its said that; Stan, Hogan were also on that bus when Andre mouthed off something rather racial towards Bad News and he demanded the bus then pull over. Andre refused to get out to face Bad News Allen (a former Olympic bronze medalist in the 1970's). Yeah can't wait to see this "Back to the Territories" doc. Gonna compare it to all the heresy people have been saying over the years with all those road stories we've always heard about.
