I respect the fuck out of the people who enjoyed her music not cowtowing and speaking up when they saw how she was disrespecting them. Usually, fans are so brain dead they will defend anything and everything their idol does, but the majority of her fans defended themselves and called her out on her bs which I respect. Honestly, it is similar to her own personality: she is an opinionated person not afraid of speaking up to people and I saw that in a lot of the people she was dogging online.

Doja's fall from grace started a few years ago, actually. She toured South America during lollapalooza. In Argentina at the end of her set people were chanting "uno mas" (one more) but I guess she heard "no mas" (no more) because she stormed off the stage. Then in Paraguay she didn't want to go out to say hi to fans because it was raining. When people got upset she had one of her twitter rants and threatened to quit music forever. I did not appreciate how disrespectful she was to us from SA and that's when a lot of us stopped listening to her.
She had a smaller "drama" when a tiktok aesthetician was speculating if she had any work done on her face and Doja called her an old hag among other insults. She has a history of not taking criticism or aspects of fame such as speculation and drama well, and she has gotten into beef with other people before (see Noah from Stranger Things).
And the most disturbing one is her past in chatrooms, which goes deeper than what Grayson mentioned on this video. Apparently when she was a teenager she used to go into alt right groups and let white boys call her the N word. I read this many times but I never saw concrete proof. If you feel so inclined there's probably more information somewhere on reddit.

    • @victoriazineroni7059

Yeah, and in Paraguay she was being outwardly xenophobic and classist towards her fans. She liked a tweet saying "these paraguay people can't even afford food for their kids, what businesses do they have attending a concert?" After fans got upset about the way they were treated by her.

@@CMatt29Africans don't typically raise their kids to use that word. It's typically something picked up else where. It's also to my understanding that she didn't have a relationship with her father like that, so again as someone has pointed out that word isn't really relevant to her father being African. I was thrown when I heard it used in her music, but realized shortly after that she was biracial and I assumed she hung around black people.

I’m never gonna sit here and pretend like I understand what it is like to go from underground artist to one of the biggest most famous people in the world. And even the people saying “this is what you asked for“, I am sure that you also wouldn’t know how to handle that level of fame, that fast. No matter who you are or how badly you want to be successful for your art, no one is prepared for the level of involvement that everyone now feels they have into your life. What she should’ve done was taking a hiatus off of all social media and reached out for some help. I agree that I believe this is a shift in her identity and she doesn’t know how to navigate it without lashing out on others, and now, unfortunately, instead of having the option to quietly step back, or continue her career with all the love and notoriety that she has earned herself, she now has let it all play out in front of the public, and has now allowed the public to have yet another opinion on her personal life. ive seen a couple of videos about Doja in recent weeks, and something i havent seen anybody mention is that like last year or the year before, she was supposed to perform at a festival in south america (dont remember which country), but the festival had to be cancelled because of flooding/natural disaster(??). A lot of the other artists that were supposed to perform met their fans outside their hotels, talked to them, and apparently MGK even performed for them on the street. Doja didnt, and of course she doesnt have to, but when fans expressed their sadness at not getting to see her, she had a whole rant about how ungrateful her fans are, pretty sure she said something racist or of the like about the country being 3rd world and not worth her time anyway, and then said she was never going to make music again (since her fans are so ungrateful).

I am willing to bet that for a fact Doja is doing this on purpose.
I remember she talked about how she wanted to retire that she was sick of the fame, and she never wanted to be a mainstream thing.
She said that she was gonna quit in 2022, and I believe she meant what she said and wanted to call it a wrap.
She's prolly tired of the commercialized music, she's tired of being in the public eye, and she resents her fans who act as thought they know her.
Doesn't excuse the behavior, but I wouldn't be shocked she did this as a way of throwing gasoline on everything to eventually flick the match.

It just seems to me like she is still, ultimately, a chronically online person who is lashing out at her fanbase because she can't take a break from being online and doesn't want to hear all the negative critiques from people regarding her partner. As for parasocial relationships and famous personalities in general, I do think it's weird when fans say "you would be nothing without me you'd still be poor/ugly/whatever" and things of the sort. It is manipulative and shows people do not view artists as humans. You cannot "support" someone and simultaniously demand they fullfill your every wish. Support is a response to the art, not what you use to demand art. Your dentist wouldn't be anywhere either if people wouldn't visit and pay them, so would your therapist or nail tech. That's kind of the point of arts and services, and add to that that we live in an age where it takes 3 seconds to consume art without personal monetary expenses. If you do pay, you pay for an art product, service or an event, not for the freedom to mercilessly criticise or demand more than someone is able or willing to give (I am obviously not referring to grooming and other very questionable acts, that is an entirely different story).

In regards to Doja being possessed and/or selling her soul, I’m pretty sure the reasoning people use for her being so open about “it” is that she’s trying to influence others to follow Satan. That’s a major thing in Christianity, that Satan is constantly trying to tempt believers in various ways, both directly and through his followers.
So, from a Christian standpoint, if someone believes that she’s demonic in some way, her lack of subtlety is actually some of the strongest proof they have.

Omg thank you for saying that her new music sounds exactly like her old music. When I heard her new song I thought the exact same thing. Like how does she not realize how much it sounds her old. I also get so sick of seeing people make excuses for her or call her a genius and so unique. She literally just did the same thing as lady Gaga with switching up her look to something more people would consider out there and odd after finding success looking and dressing in a more typical way for a pretty female star, every song she makes sounds exactly the same and there much, MUCH more talented female rappers and artists out there, and even her the edgy and “dark” imagery in her latest video seems like nothing but an unoriginal and cheap imitation of stuff lil nas x has done. And plenty of those artists deal with just as much crap when dealing with crappy parts of being rich and famous but none of have resorted to being absolutely awful to her fans. And the thing is I’m not even that mad about her having these feelings but there are ways to express these things without hurting people. Also just look at the stark contrast of lady Gaga making one of the best songs I’ve ever heard about violence against women meanwhile Doja is openly putting down alleged victims because she doesn’t think their stories are serious even to warrant the smallest amount of kindness. I don’t think her boyfriend is irredeemable with the kind of allegations that have been made against him. If she would have just said something like “oh he’s done so much to improve and change and I’m sorry to those that have been hurt but please respect my privacy” and just left it at that it would have been fine. She also could said some of her fans are going too far or that she doesn’t love her old stuff anymore but no she just had be as cruel as possible to the people who helped make her dream a reality. As far I’m concerned I will never be a fan again. Plenty of other artists out there way more deserving of our time and attention. Also the people who defending her I think just don’t want to stop listening to her music. Of course if you really love her music, sure keep listening it to it. But it is possible to love the work of an artist and recognize they’re not the best person.

i 100% understand saying you're not your fans friends and that they dont know you, but making fun of them for liking your music, blocking victims of ur bf and etc is just not the same as distancing yourself from your fans.

The silly mini ‘Satanic panic’ portion of the backlash is ridiculous, to me.

as a black person with that lens on this also, i literally think that her blackness plays a part in all of this and how people react to her doing all she’s doing (just wanna say the only real issue i have with her is the whole bf potential gr00mer thing bc that’s VERY weird) ANYWAYS i think how ppl perceive her blackness can make them go one of two ways it either pushes them fully towards not liking her or being her fan anymore bc (i’m assuming ofc) “aw dang she was one of the goods ones n now she an azzhole so now i definitely don’t like her anymore” OR we go can the complete opposite way of like hating on her or being turned off and then she releases new music and all of a sudden “oh she’s not even that bad i take it back etc etc” bc she’s a pretty lightskin black person (she’s biracial but still a black person) and a lot of people are way more forgiving of a lightskin black person than they are anyone else. idk i just find it fascinating to see from my own perspective and experiences about the world. anyways yeah again my main gripe and tbh everyone’s main gripe with her should be the fact that she’s blocking ppl for outing that her bf is a potential gr00mer but yk..ppl gone ppl

Honestly she could’ve weathered half or maybe even all of the other things if she hadn’t turned on the people that were willing to protect her. Not saying that’s ideal but it is how most famous people go about their controversies. She just doesn’t like being famous and it really started showing with her getting tired of say so. But I doubt she’d rather be struggling with the rest of us…

The thing with her boyfriend started before the threads incident, its really what finally triggered that whole thing besides the stuff about her past music and fans she tweeted a bit before all this. Her fans were already getting mad at her but this was all like the final straw i think.

i just need to say it somewhere, her behavior and erratic anger, the live videos spewing hate to her fans, the tweets about wishing her fans to die, the sudden life changes with expression through art (her painting on lives) the demonic tattooing, hair chop and having plants and becoming spiritual is so so so similar to someone close to me with BPD 1. i’m definitely not saying anything or making any diagnosis but i just can’t help but see the close similarities.

people can changes and do different things for sure there is nothing wrong with change, im not a doctor but i’ve seen doctors make connections with people who make drastic life changes connecting to mental illness.
my other thoughts are maybe this is just the toxic behaviors of a libra 🤣

She needs a therapist and to hand her social media over to a PR team and not publicly engage with social media, block any tags with her name in and just engage with her fans when she has to.

this wont affect her in the long run honestly. the little she lost will come scurrying back the moment she drops her new album and theyll again try to peer into her life like its their business.

My biggest issue with Doja is that it feels like a lot of self hate. Like she doesn’t like her blackness with her actions online, the people she chooses to hang/date but using its privileges to say the N word & be in hip hop. I don’t know the woman but it’s disappointing because she is talented.

i think what she meant by cash grabs was less the sound and more the message? the vibe, the little cues; they're all different, but that could simply be attributed to it being a new project rather than distinctively abandoning her past style. only stark difference is the message is definitely not about sex this time haha.
her previous albums were absolutely almost entirely hyper-sexual whereas from the current two songs that are out, maybe Scarlet is more about her journey through that? mind you i'm a fan cause i like her personality, yet i don't actually know her so it can all be speculation based on projection. cause honestly i used to perceive her hyper-sexuality as empowering rather than selling out cause she seemed like she was owning it and enjoying it rather than doing to please.

The bigger problem here is not with Doja, but rather the fans' devotion to celebrity and putting them on a pedestal when we all know human beings are never perfect. At some point, we have to separate the art from the artist just to have some perspective in our internet lives.
In the past, I have been a fan of artists like Hayley Williams, Ellie Goulding and Bebe Rexha but never have I ever thought that these are the perfect role model for young people. They have been lucky enough where their hard work has paid off compared to so many talented artists who are still struggling.
Don't get me wrong, we can enjoy the art and support the artist if we feel like it. But we have to understand that there wil be times when we will catch them on a bad day and have interactions like Doja. But again, great video, GP! Always enjoy your Op-ed vidoes :)
