    I have read alot of the comments and they dont make much sense to me. I have stayed in paisley all my life and the town centre is now a ghost town. It used to be a great place to shop always buzzing on a saturday so much you could hardly move on the foot paths that was on the side of the road that went right down the high street and turned to go down moss street and the traffic could turn down the street that burtons shop was on that took you to the taxi rank as well, and it was just none stop traffic all day up until 1996 them the town centre slowly went downhill. People always say braehead shopping centre killed paisley off becouse it was just a 10 minute bus ride away at the end of renfrew. But i dont thinck that, becouse when i go to braehead i never see any people i know from paisley. And i know alot of people lol. I thinck if the council opend up the high street again to traffic it would make a diffirence, becouse surely it cant make it any worse than it is now. A mean there must have been about 4 people in that upload there. Its sad. That a once thriving town centre has ended up maybe the worse town centre in scotland. Plus if the council allowed free parking that would help hugely. Honestly tbh i believe the towns own council couldnt care less about it. Its not that hard to see. A mean who wants to pay for parking just to be able to walk into a few shops that sell next to nothing. Becouse i wouldnt. In the years before 1996,97 every one looked forward to going into the town centre becouse you would meet so many different characters, now you dont look forward to going into the town centre as this upload shows why!

    • @scotsmantravels3288
      @scotsmantravels3288  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yip sad to see Alan, agree free parking is a must but I think its tricky to compete with Silverburn and Braehead nearby. hard to see how it can be turned around now.

    Moved away from the area around 2004, but paisley was a fantastic place to grow up in the 90s and 2000s. Used to love watching the revellers lining up to go into the casbah nightclub. Paisley cross was always buzzing and there was always something going on. Unfortunately I believe that it has taken a massive turn for the worse. The towns always quiet, the paisley centre and the inn stores have hardly any tenants in it, in general it seemed like every character that made the town a special place seemed to dissappear. Used to love buying the paisley express from a st mirren daft big fella called Ian who worked on the cross. There are a million and one memories I have about the town, it would take me all day to list them. I hope paisley council can lower the business rates and get some life back into the town.

    • @scotsmantravels3288
      @scotsmantravels3288  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, that brought back some memories a few guys used to sell the PDE at the cross . Hard to tell what they can do to improve the town as Silverburn and Braehead so close and loads free parking. Did you know Marks have closed on High Street and moved to Renfrew Road retail park just food hall now a shame for the high street.

    • @wimblewomble21

      @@scotsmantravels3288 marks was a great store, used to buy my lunch in there and use it as a cut through to get to story street via the paisley centre. The last big store I remember closing down was Arnotts dept store. My elder relatives used to meet in their cafe a couple of time a week, alongside the caprice on gilmour st and the cafe near the paisley centre inn stores. I think the problem is that paisley seemed to stop utilising alot of its talent. They used to make the effort of trying to get people such as Paolo nutini and David sneddon to play in the town centre and create a buzz. Xmas time was always amazing in paisley with the lights switch on etc, the piazza with its children's sensory displays during the big holiday seasons etc. The town seemed to be great at nailing fine details which can make a town exceptional in attracting people. If the council can lower business rated and get some creative people into the mix, then paisley can be a great place to spend time again on the weekends. But hopefully with the pandemic, people seem to want to be mingling out and about in the towns again, so maybe this might be a massive booster. But I am always proud of the town no matter what

    I live in Somerset, i'm from Barrhead so i regard Paisley as my ain wee place. Its a ghost town now. Shame because Paisley has loads to offer in Architecture and local history. My late mum was a highly trained District Nurse who worked in Ferguslie Park.
    Storie Street has a top fish n 'chip shop just as i write you said it!

    The town is now an eyesore compared to what it was in the 1980s. It once had decent shops and a bustling town centre, but now wreaks of poverty and neglect. Thatcher and Renfrewshire Council are to blame, she killed UK industrial towns and the council were wasteful with their spending. Now its just full of eateries, pubs, charity shops, vape cafes and boarded shopfronts. I grew up in Foxbar next to Ivanhoe shops until 1992 and have only been back once. I do have happy memories of growing up in Paisley, but I could never live there again.

    Rod Stewart has been known to have a drink in The Wee Howff on his way to the airport after a Scotland game (after the demise of his previous watering hole, The Wee Barrel). Coats Memorial church recently featured in the Outlander TV series (if memory serves me correctly, standing in as a church in Boston). Like many towns, a lot of shop fronts in Paisley are now empty, unfortunately, thanks to out of town shopping centres like Braehead (hence perhaps the 'shabby' description mentioned in a previous comment?). As well as the Medieval Abbey, some great architecture in Paisley with a larger than usual number of listed buildings.

    Moved to Paisley for a few years after graduating. When I was at uni in Aberdeen, a few people were from Paisley and they kept talking about how 'stabby' it was. I loved it there. Was affordable, which was great because I wasn't on a good salary. Then went to London for a bit because of work and nobody could believe how cheap it was to buy a flat in Paisley compared to London.

    When I grew up in Paisley....Woolworths was next to M&s and I think La scala and the Regal cinemas were either side of them I think. Across the road was Gibsons Tea room. My mother used to be a waitress in there.

      M&S was across from Woolworths. La Scala next to M&S, Picture House (the bug hut) up a bit from M&S where the shopping arcade now is, Regal was across from Coats Memorial, Kelburne out Glasgow road across from Burgh Bar approx and Alex cinema in Neilson Rd across from RAI. So 5 cinemas in Paisley when I was a very young boy. Paisley went downhill after 1970. I don't miss it at all. The place I knew has long gone and been replaced by a dismal place. Sign of the times. Those with any sense left the joint, partly contributing to its wreck and ruin. Sad, but you get what you deserve in this world.
