Rattlesnakes dont want to waste venom on humans. They know your too large to be prey. From their perspective you're the dangerous predator. If they bite, it's because they feel they cant escape. It also means they have no venom for approximately 3 to 4 hours and are defenseless.

Laughs her butt off at him being such a scardy cat about the "bears" he heard!!! Sounded more like the wind, bears don't purposefully seek people out to hurt them. Although, if a mother bear with new babies felt he was enough of a threat to her babies, she might vocalize at him to get him to back off bc he was too close. I have, fortunately, never had a tick on me and I live in Maine. I have seen a Lynx once when I was like 6 out the window at my Grandma's. She lives in the middle of nowhere though. I have seen a fox and that's about it unless you want to count the occasional moose I've seen. We don't get any kind of venomous creatures to my knowledge. Also, side note, NEVER run from predators! Lots of them have a prey-drive and are MUCH faster than humans and will be more likely to chase you! My Grandfather said, when in doubt, never look them in the eye (It's a dominant, alpha thing that animals find offending), stand your ground, and back up as slowly as possible without turning around, call the Wildlife and Fishery services if its a public spot your in and a predator comes at you.

Can confirm black bears are generally pretty fearful of people, I used to chase them off by banging trash can lids together up at uncles cabin but you should still definitely be careful with them somebody was eaten in my area recently by a black bear because they didn't check up in the trees around their campsite before they went to sleep that night they like to sleep in trees so keep your eyes up when looking for them they're climbers

Yup, i was fishing with my friend (i live in AK) he spotted a black bear that came by the river. I was aboit 20 yards away from him around the river bend so i didnt spot it until he layed down to play dead. Then i saw it trotting up toward him, i pumped out a couple rounds of my .45 and shouldered the 12 gauge and hussled over to him. Bear ran away, lets just say now he knows not to play dead in front of a black bear.

    • @sgtjonmcc

    • @jreyman
      @jreyman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +53

Don't mess with grizzley's, or polar bears (they're more closely related than they look, bad attitude and all), they will easily and painfully erase your existencefrom this world. Bears are also much faster than they look like they'd be.
Mountain lions, or bobcats, that decide to attack, will ambush you faster than you can react. Ever watch a cat pounce on a mouse? Now imagine you are the mouse.
Coyotes and wolves are wild dogs. Coyotes are dangerous and smart, best to keep your distance. The wolf is is more like a trained assasin team, cunning, calculated, patient, and stealthy.
I have only seen a few recluses in my life. While dangerous, they aren't as common as the back widow, but they usually pick places that they can hide in darkness or shadowy areas. their strong, dense webs are usually a sign there is at least one nearby, and to become extra cautious. It is unlikely that your pillow, or shoes would be the overnight target of a spider.

And if you unload on it with your Glock it's dead lol. I'm not afraid of any animals in the US. The most dangerous I've seen is a panther and it ran off, I was armed at the time. And another time a copperhead. But there is antivenom readily available at the hospital. You will def not die immediately, even the most venomous snakes in the US, you have several hours before you die to get to medical help. Stay armed and be watchful and you will fine. And btw I live in North Georgia that is bear country. I do see a lot of deer, but I'm very watchful, and I'm careful at dawn and dusk

Well... Yes but actually no. If a predator has it's eyes set on you(rare unless it's been a lean season) it is undetectable by your average person. However a lot of fatal or near fatal interactions between people and nature are due to animals being surprised by people. Which is hilarious, because people aren't very sneaky.
This is why it is suggested that when you're in the woods you whistle or sing to generate a lot if noise.

I enjoyed this segment in your series and I thought I'd add a bit of information. Tourists in Alaska are trained before hiking. They are told that bears are dangerous if you startle them. You should wear bells on your feet so that they can hear you coming. Also, you need to carry pepper spray to help fend off an attack.
Another thing they train you on is to look for bear poo. The smaller black bears poo is made up of rather small round pellets. The large and extremely dangerous grizzly bear’s poo contains bells and smells like pepper spray.

If you want to see the scariest looking bear we have over here, check out the Kodiak bears. About 1500lbs (a little over 680 kilo) and can stand almost twice as tall as an average adult if it stood on its hind legs. I'm talking about a bear that if domesticated, you could actually ride into battle.

Black bears are still more dangerous. Brown bears are stronger and less skiddish but it is hard to overstate how little of a fuck they give about you. Brown bears almost never actively hunt for meat, but black bears do. That simple distinction is why they are more dangerous.
Mind you, neither are very likely to hurt you at all. They see you as big and scary and don't want any of that shit.

I agree... I’ve seen/come face to face/scared off several black bears (I used to work in pacific nw forests for the forest service). Unless they’re a mama w cubs or just out of hibernation they are generally not very aggressive. I did have a co worker get between a mama and cubs once & had quite a story to tell. I was rushed by a mountain lion though and, luckily, was so in shock that I just kept walking towards it thinking “is that a mountain lion?!” instead of running away so it just sort of veered then jogged on by.

I live in North Carolina and am actually working on a snake education programs. Most of my venomous snake encounters have been with copperheads! I nearly picked one up as a kid when we first moved here. Thank goodness my dad caught me first!
Another freaky snake story I heard was a woman taking care of her rosebush. She thought it had been thorns pricking into her skin. Her son went out to look though and there was a nest of baby rattlers in it. They had been biting her! They took her to urgent care and she was alright, but it's stuck with me.
I mainly see snakes because I hike a lot. Most are out on sidewalks sunning themselves. Give them a wide berth and you're usually fine. The most common snake encounter is still garter snakes, which are harmless. They might musk if you pick them up, but they won't really hurt you. The main thing I'm afraid of when hiking on the Blue Ridge is somebody shooting me tbh.

A park ranger in Glacier National Park once explained to me and some folks how to tell the difference between a grizzly and a black bear. You kick it in the ass and then climb a tree. If it chases you up the tree, it's a black bear. If it knocks the tree down, it's a grizzly.
Coyotes generally don't mess with people. Every once in a while you'll hear about one biting someone, but it's pretty rare. They're bigger than foxes. Like a mid sized dog.

Boar -- They gather in large numbers, are fairly smart, quite aggressive, have excellent sense of smell(knows where you are before you), horrible for the environment, can weigh few to several hundred pounds, disease ridden, and can tank quite a few small to medium calibre firearm shots especially if hit in the large shoulder.
Moose -- Like a deer mixed with a bison. They are big and don't give a fuck. They will stand in front of cars or challenge them. Even if driving a car you may survive crashing into a deer, but your chances are low against a moose. And lastly... with their very formidable horns they charge attack without warning in relative silence.
FloridaMan -- this creature is the most powerful, it can commit heinous crimes with wild abandon, has no moral compass, can be equipped with the most surprising array of deadly weapons, and it may tank an entire magazine and still remain a threat with its drug addled mind. The difference between hitting a deer and hitting a moose on the highway is a collision with a deer is more likely to be survivable. Moose are twice the size, they literally come out of nowhere, and if the body doesn't completely crush/take the roof off your vehicle, the legs smashing through the windscreen will end you. Maybe they're just more plentiful in Canada, though. I've had more scary close calls with moose than with deer.

In America we have a saying to survive bear attacks:
"If it's black, attack. If it's brown, get down. If it's white, goodnight."
Black bears are the smallest and the most timid. Usually they will run off if you make enough noise and make yourself look scary. And they usually won't try to eat you. A brown or a grizzly MAY try to eat you but it's more likely its a mother bear protecting her cubs so in that case, just play dead and hope for the best. Once the bear decides you arent a threat, she'll leave you alone (hopefully). If its a polar bear (white) make your peace. These mofos aren't scared of humans and they definitely will eat you. If one of these guys picks you out as lunch you might as well be polite and expose your neck for them to make it quick both for you and them.

In Texas, to carry any firearm in public outside of your vehicle you must have a License to Carry issued by the Department of Public Safety. With it, you can carry it concealed or in the open. If you are caught carrying a firearm without the License it is a Class A or B misdemeanor depending on what they charge you with. If convicted you will not ever be able to legally carry in Texas again. However, you are correct if you are talking about bladed weapons where one can now carry a samurai sword or a halberd down the street if they wish. Brass knuckles are now legal as well.

    2) Alligator: Real monsters, so pray your boat doesn't capsize, and keep away from the shore
    3) Spiders: Yeah there are a few, but in most areas you should be fine
    4) Cougars: Sneaky mofos. You should watch your back, but a lot of the attacks have been because of runners/ bikers being seen as fleeing prey, so as long as there are no young ones with you, and you back away cautiously, you should be ok.
    5) Coyotes: There's nothing to fear from them, unless they are rabid; they are still small animals, and nowhere near capable of taking down an adult human. You may need to worry about your small dog and cat, though. Now, Coywolves on the other hand may pose more of a risk.
    6) Gila monster: Small, but quite startling. Nothing much needed to say.
    7) Rattle snakes: Back the hell away, or otherwise pray you can get to a clinic fast enough, cause it will hurt. Beware the babies.
    8) American Bison: If more people read those little pamphlets on the correct behavior while visiting yellowstone, less people would be dead. But will those people respect this giant's space? Look in the headlines
    9) Deer: Spreaders of disease, too; moose killers. Sorry Bambi, but your species populations need to be controlled, and give me less heart attacks on the rode
Now, some other creatures I think you missed out on are Moose, Wolverines, Giant Mississippi Catfish, Elephant Seal, Spirit Bears, and Timber/Arctic Wolves

Oh I’ve had those nervous walks, and I’m a country Texas girl. We also had bobcats. Coyotes will gang up on medium sized prey, so if there’s a big enough pack they might attack a person. Cotton mouths, rattlesnakes, copper heads, and coral snakes were the most dangerous in our area. Always have a dog with you, as they make a lot of noise and run around in the brush and will scare away most wild animals. Oh yeah, and scorpions. Ugh. And it’s smart to check your shoes in areas that have spiders and scorpions! I’ve been stung on my feet before by scorpions in my shoes. Very mild type, thankfully. They kept crawling up our drains. Got stung on the thigh when I was trying to take a bath once.

Anyway I heard it on one side of the house then in just a couple of seconds heard it on the other side of the house. Friends told me - there aren't any mountain lions around here. Whenever canoeing in the upper Midwest, we always carry additional paddles. Why? Cottonmouths. On two different occasions I've glanced down at my paddle just to see a cottonmouth coiled around the shaft of the paddle, inches from my hand. Protocol is to calmly let go of the paddle and use one of the spare paddles. We even wear bite resistant gloves as an added safety, but it wouldn't protect your wrist or arm. My buddy was steering one time, and he forgot to stow the docking line, which was left dangling overboard. Well, a cottonmouth latched onto it, and I hear him screaming. I turn around, and the thing is almost halfway into the canoe, with my buddy swatting at it with the paddle. First words out of my mouth were, "Stop, you're just gonna piss it off!" I told him to ditch the line, as we carry backups to our backups for this reason. He flung the line overboard, and that cottonmouth must've been pissed because it followed us for a few minutes before giving up and heading to the shore.
People wonder why Americans and Australians are so crazy, and the reason is simple; we both live in big countries full of lots of wildlife that would love to have us for dinner. Creates a very different culture, and that creates some pretty... "interesting" people, lol!

I was taught growing up in a family that camped a lot, to tell the difference between a black bear and a Grizzly Bear , climb a tree. If the bear climbs up after you it’s a black bear. If he shakes you out of the tree, it’s a Grizzly. You didn’t mention the scorpions we have in the desert Southwest or the tarantulas! Those things are the stuff of nightmares!!

Kimberly Kohr tarantulas are generally really nice to you if you leave them alone. Just be careful if they lift up their front legs! That means they’re in attack/defense mode

You definately have to watch out for cougars here.
I've known several ppl that had a few too many drinks late night at the bar, were approached by cougars, taken home & the cougars had their way w/ them.

You crack me up, love your videos! I live in a small town just outside St. Louis, so it's a pretty urban area, and there are coyotes everywhere. In my back yard I get coyotes, deer, enormous Cooper Hawks, but no bears. Yet.
