Soldered ram on laptops. What's the deal?

  • Some laptops have soldered memory, and that's it. This means they don't support upgrades. It's not necessarily bad, but it's good to know so you can buy one with enough RAM from the start if this is the case for the model you've set your eyes on. An example is the newer Apple laptops, which have RAM 'integrated' into the processor. Thus, from this RAM perspective, we have 3 types of laptops:
    1 - Laptops with soldered memory only. They don't support upgrades.
    2 - Laptops with soldered memory and some extra SODIMM slots. They support upgrades in those slots (which don't always come empty, so be careful to check beforehand)
    3 - Laptops with memory only in SODIMM slots. So 'traditional'. The RAM has slots. Probably 1-2 slots are already occupied.
