Arranging the Plants - New Border Part 3 - My English Garden April 2021

  • Today I decide where and why I plant each shrub and perennial in my new border. I look at where the sun and shade fall in the morning and afternoon and take in to consideration how big the mature plants will be.
    This year I am planting up an empty garden border with plants: bought online, at a local garden centre, moved from other parts of the garden and cuttings.
    This is a series of videos showing the border develop from empty to mature.

    Hi Paul Good Morning! I am glad I can't afford someone to come in with 500 plants, because I love creating the garden myself and it may not look like a magazine, but I am proud of my own trial and error and efforts. That is not to say that I am not paralysed with fear sometimes when placing plants or plant choice lol. A lot of professionals get it wrong and plant things too close together and have to move them, and this gives me comfort. I ALWAYS have to move plants that I have put in the wrong place more than I get it right! I think you inspire people with your attitude. There is nothing better than growing plants ( and keeping bantams!hahaha)

    “All Plants can be moved, more or less”, and then you chuckled! LOL 😂😂😂 That reminds me, the previous owner to my house planted several Ottoman Cherry Laurel Bushes. They planted one on the boarder between our house and the next door neighbor’s house. The next door neighbor claimed that is his bush, along with a Rose Bush that I planted next to it. I dug up the Rose Bush, which I had bought, and paid for, and moved it further on my side. The Cherry Laurel Bush is too big and heavy to move, so I got a whole bunch of cuttings from it, some including part of the root, and moved it further over into my yard. I trimmed it up real good so it is no longer on his side. LOL Now I have a whole bunch of little bushes growing from cuttings.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hadrian's Wall - love it! Hope that dicentra can indeed take the sun as it's now in a sunny position! On this one the 'hearts' are more clustered together rather than spread out over an arching stem.

    I saw a lily of the valley in foreground, they are the biggest thugs in my garden. After 3 years of trying to eradicate them, the battle is still on, they still poking their heads in spring😫. Yes, Paul, that´s how gardens evolve, with or without the garden gurus named Alan,Monty, Harry and David and without a big spender trousers on. This is - unless you were born in a money filled bathtub - the way we gardeners make our gardens look like our paradise! BTW I prefer Bardolino or Prosecco. In the mornings I´ve often been seen wandering my garden with a cup of coffee, and later in the evening with a glas of Martini on the rocks. Imagine us, feeling so content with our well designed gardens, that we take not only our garden tools out, but the drinks as well. This year I´m going to get my hands wet and build a waterfeature by myself. Don´t call me Charlie, but wish me luck. I can´t wait for your next video, to see how the border is coming together. Thanks for letting us know your thought process on this new border! Best wishes, Hanni.

    I love the way you are planning a 'trick of the eye' with the planting around the wall - it's going to look really effective. I also like my garden to evolve over a season too. The trouble with all these 'instant garden' programmes on tv is that they give unrealistic expectations to folks who are perhaps just starting out with a garden. They miss out the most important attribute of all .... patience 😉🌻

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree - of course they only have a day or two (to make the program) but I love the process and can therefore concentrate on just a couple of plants at a time and really enjoy them. If they all arrive at once I wouldn't 'know' them I'd just know their name.

It made me feel better about my lack of a "proper" design and the inability to re-create what I would love to have in my garden, namely a miniature Great Dixter mixed border. At present, because of the cold weather, I am learning to propagate plants from seed indoors, with limited success, I must admit :-) At least the verbena bonariensis and mirabilis seedlings look healthy and promising! Your garden is looking fabulous! Would you believe we had snow flurries today here? And yes, ticks are awful here in Eastern Canada. In a few weeks we'll also be besieged by tiny blood sucking Blackflies. I garden in a hooded "bug jacket", pants tucked in rubber boots sprayed in bug repellent and there's the ever vigilant tick check, after coming inside from out. When it gets really hot and dry in summer the ticks and blackflies die back, the ticks are still out but not like in May/June. The climate is changing and we see ticks on the snow in winter in the forest when it is mild out.

    Brilliant planning, I am sometimes confused by the label part shade or semi shade that you often see in plant label descriptions it can mean a lot of things from dappled shade under a deciduous tree most of the day to all morning or all afternoon sun.
    I like the blue flowered forget me not near the shed, are you going to leave it there and let its flowers mix in with the Jacobs ladder flowers? The elderflower is great for the birds, strange that elder and rowan are similar in flower and both produce berries but are not closely related.
    Ajuga is great and I love blue flowers, I have also got lithodora which has blue flowers and likes acid soil.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That should be a quiz question - what is the difference between part shade and semi shade! I wonder if the plants even know. 😊
      Yes, I will leave the forget-me-not because I love nature finding its own way - but I will watch it like a hawk - I've seen in other gardens what it is capable of.
      I am new to Ajuga so excited about my new ones ( I bought plants). Thanks for letting me know lithodora likes acidic soil - I have some in the front garden - it should be ground cover but is busy growing up the philadelphus 😅

      @@paultsworld Sounds like Lithodora might have the same problem as vinca then, I shall have to keep an eye on both of them to to make sure they don't spread too far. I put the Lithodora quite near a Vaccinium 'Fireballs' to contrast the colours, the pink flowers and red berries of the vaccinium. For blue flowers which I love I also have ajuga and Himalayan blue poppies, and was also considering getting a fairy thimbles low growing campanula although that's more purply-blue.
      Ajuga (which is how I pronounce it anyway) is great I have never seen it growing wild in a woodland though, it is also called bugle when referring to the native species especially.

      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't call my lithodora invasive because it's not sending roots around the place - it just fancies using the philadelphus as a climbing frame - it's really easy to cut back, which I will do once it finishes adorning the philadelphus with nice splashes of blue.
      Thanks for the ajuga - bugle. I was familiar with bugle and just am just realising it is ajuga.

      Our countryside has lots of cow parsley along the verges of the country roads - a lovely and sure sign of Summer with the white flowers swaying in the breeze.

    Hi Paul! I noticed signs of illness on your Masquerade rose (possibly mildew - peronospora), take a closer look at it, and you will probably have to cut off the infected shoot. Or is it a sunburn at the shoot? thanks for the great video!

      Hi! Thanks for pointing that out. I had noticed something was wrong - I had to cut its tap root when I moved it so I’m wondering if its just stressed. It could be sunburn as it’s been none-stop sunshine this April. Thanks for the mildew suggestion - I’ll read up on it.

    That looks awfully dry Paul; same here. Have you got a Skimmia? It's not just evergreen but has highly scented flowers then red berries, very pretty (Not the dark red one); and Sarcococca also evergreen, winter perfume.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’re right Wendy - the whole garden gets totally dry so quickly so I have to concentrate on keeping the individual plants alive rather than the bed. Some of the plants have scorched leaves.
      I used to have a skimmia but it didn’t have flowers or berries and the plant just sat there and did nothing.
      Pity because there are obviously interesting varieties.

      @@paultsworld I'm always wary of interesting varieties - many old ones are new to me anyway. Perhaps you had one that needed a male and female - mine doesn't and had flowers when I bought, a real delight. Try one in a pot maybe, if it didn't like your soil. There's Japonica (needs two) and S.laureola, from the Himalayas..

      @@paultsworld Rush - some pollinated by hand/brush. Mine is self-pollinating. I've read that some are semi-epiphytic too. Worth getting a self-poll. one. I'm sorry but I had to dash out; just think of plants in a disco. Mine are on limestone, one a tiny throw-out still strulles but flowers the old one is OK. I do post photos, but not here- hope you're watering well.

      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I spend much of yesterday evening watering - the garden is bone dry so I have to be really careful with all these new plants. I've no water in the water butts so the ericaceous plants are having to have tap water - not ideal but needs must.

      I had a campsis a few years ago - it was in a large pot on my patio - it struggled and then died a year or two later. I think it was the Winter and being in a pot makes it colder for the roots - so I think the cold killed it. Maybe too tender?
