    Another informative video! I also have pots with unidentified plants. I need to take your advice from now on and tag them. Your new plants were very reasonably priced compared to mail order nurseries in the United States.

    I like the way you get excited about plants , just like me ! Some people just think I’m crazy ,
    I had 1 day Lilly , that was off by itself, so , I dug up & cut it up , made 12 plants !!

    Hello Paul, I have really enjoyed this video and am going to make an order from Thomson and morgan after seeing your healthy-looking plants and 3 for £15 is a great price !! The other day I was walking around the garden to see if I could split some plants to take with me when I move home and could not believe my luck one of my favourite clematises had layered and rooted so I cut it from the parent plant and I have a new plant for FREE yay. It was lovely to see and hear the wildlife in your garden . Thanks for sharing your videos with us . I have sat through a really boring advert but if it helps your channel then that is what I will do in the future.

      Hi Joanna, it's brilliant to find a "ready layered" plant, hope you can take plenty of plants when you move. That is so sweet of you to watch the advert - it helps a lot and I really appreciate it.

    Great plant haul Paul. I love the Paniculata Hydrangea. I have 2 on order from my tiny village garden centre, it will be the first time they are stocking them. And a Pinkie Winkie!!!!! I am so envious. I wouldn't worry about the Cistus. The whole of the mountain where I live is covered with it (it's called JARA over here ) and I am a zone 6 and it not only survives but it obviously thrives. When it blooms all together it looks as if the mountain is white with snow. Really spectacular each year and quite the tourist attraction. Love your nature shots as always.

    Lovely plants, so exciting to get new plants and dream about how glorious they're gonna be in the yard. I myself added 4 Hydrangea paniculata and 1 lacecap to my yard last year, so exciting to see them grow, although in my scorching hot summers (I'm in Italy) they need tons of water. Also added 3 hostas for the first time, I had no idea they took so long to emerge in spring, I even dug around them recently to see if they were alive, turns out they are, I guess they take their time!

    • @paultsworld

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Kara, thank you for following my garden's progress and so pleased you like the videos.
      U-tube celeb 😊 - wow, so far not signed any autographs - I'm in the shadow of the plants and wildlife - they are the stars of the show. I'm just an enthusiast with a love of nature and I suppose gardening falls nicely with that.
      I started showcasing my photography in the form of slideshows - initially with Britain (as you can see from my early videos) and then I was going to progress to various other parts of the world. I have quite a collection of pictures and videos from 40 years travelling the World as a professional travel photographer.
      Then one day last April, I went out into the garden and followed a butterfly flitting from plant to plant - talked about the plants and was amazed at the response - so I made more of the garden and here we are back in the month of April - it's been a great year to be in the garden. It's an honour and humbling to have so many gardeners - many much more experienced and knowledgeable than me - also brand new gardeners, all joining in here and enjoying being out tending their 'patch' however big or small.

    I really like plant hauls 😊 great to see what you purchased and that T&M were a good service Paul. A hydrangea bed sounds divine , that will look stunning. Like you I love buying small plants and growing them on, I've missed that last summer so I don't have anything coming through this year. Maybe I'll manage to pick something up this year as I venture out "a little more" when I return to work. I tend to like finding little £1 plants in supermarkets. I really miss taking my mum shopping, calling for lunch and picking up cheap little plants.....the simple things.

    Hi Paul, how exciting, new plants and new beds. You are so funny today. It was funny when you said that the plant online was smaller than you expected and you panned to the segment of you unwrapping it there was deathly silence plus the ruler! Also, all the text correcting yourself was very amusing. Double negative! l was laughing quite loudly by that stage. Thanks for the warning on the impending death of my cistus! haha. Would you believe that the pink diamond is the same paniculata that I planted last Autumn. I have two and you will be pleased to hear, they are growing very well and faster than I expected. Buying and propagating plants is better than a holiday, eh?! So exciting and you now need new garden beds, that will be good to watch develop. Your warm weather sounds delightful. I cannot believe we are having 1degC Monday morning but days are still 20 degC. It jars me that North-West England is warmer by a long way than here. Soon we will be hammered night after night with frosts, while you had two the whole winter? ( insert sulk face emoji here * hahaha)

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Margaret, I'm pleased you pick up on the subtleties 😉. I have a thing about double negatives and there I am using one!
      Sorry to let you know your cistus might be on its last petals - my Philly says she's got a gravestone emoji to spare if you need it 🤣 apparently it was sent by a well-wisher!
      Great you've got the pink diamond and they're growing quickly - I'm impatient for these to get going. Some parts of Britain did have a very cold Winter - fortunately passed me by - but I do remember seeing a snowdrift at the side of the house which was at least 7mm deep and lasted 20 minutes - luckily I just had time to get my camera out before it disappeared. Those two spates of frost did last for at least a couple of nights if that makes you feel any better.😆
      It's only really close on to the coast - other parts of NW England, particularly the higher ground get more than their fair share of cold.

    • @margaretmichelsen766
      @margaretmichelsen766 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cannot believe you are using my gravestone emoji against me! that is so funny. My hydrangea is called "Diamond Rouge" I checked the label this afternoon but I am pretty sure it is the very same plant. I forget you are on the coast, we are at 800 m (and two hours from the coast) which gives us cooler temps in summer but definitely more frosts. Oh my goodness we got more snow than you! My mother's relatives are around Knutsford and Weaverham, some on the Isle of Man. (That Irish sea crossing is a whole new story, I can assume you can get terrible windstorms)
      I forgot to say, there is nothing better than self seeded or self-layered plants. I love the garden that gives! looking forward to seeing your new garden beds.

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Isle of Man is pretty mild of course being an island - Knutsford Winter bit colder than me being inland. I've done that Irish sea crossing to Isle of man a couple of times in a small 36 foot yacht - no problem 😅 😉.

    • @margaretmichelsen766
      @margaretmichelsen766 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made the crossing only once, it was December, the captain said there was a gale force 10 blowing, Mum laughed, thinking he was joking and I didn't know what that meant.... until we left Liverpool harbour. It should have been illegal 🤢 Were you in yacht races? I hope it wasn't under the same conditions. 😳

      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry about your horrendous experience - it can be scary. I was making a night crossing as part of a sailing course - it took 12 hours and was so calm we never even put the sails up and had to motor all the way 😂 - mind you it was gorgeous gliding into Port St. Mary at sunrise. At least we managed to sail back the following night as a light breeze came in.

    I actually thought because of the purple flowers that your new daphne was a callicarpa before you said what it was. I like the fact that the branches look spread out in that daphne and that it doesn't cast much shade, like the flowering current really in that respect. Speaking of which it's strange your flowering current self seeded as I didn't think it produced many berries!
    The cistus looks great too, I like flowers with clusters of stamens too. Dicentra flowers are interesting, remind me a bit of solomon's seal the way they occur in a line and hang downwards.
    Hydrangea 'Glam Rock'?!!! OK I looked up and kind of see now in the flowers why it has that bizarre name! Paniculata cone shaped flower heads look brilliant and I think in most of them there are still some of the small lacecap type flowers for bees.
    Goodness me those himalayan honeysuckle seedlings I would have wrongly identified as a goosefoot weed and got rid of! I have himalayan honeysuckle but it is still small and probably won't flower this year.

      Good point about the flowering currant - don’t know how it happened but I dug out three seedlings.
      I also love solomon’s seal - unfortunately I get the solomon’s seal sawfly which totally strips the leaves - at least after flowering. This Winter I moved all the plants so I’m hoping the sawfly larvae haven’t noticed.
      I’ve chosen (if I remember correctly) paniculata that have at least some fertile flowers for the bees - hope so.

      @@paultsworld Have you ever seen any berries on your flowering currants then? They are still meant to produce a few currant berries apparently although they are described as technically edible but not very tasty!
      Do the birds not eat many of the solomon's seal sawfly larvae or do they seem to avoid them like the cabbage white caterpillars? I would imagine some sawfly larvae fall victim to parasitic wasps as with cabbage white caterpillars anyway.

      Hello Vicki, I may be digging too many borders - I’m not going to have the plants! But it is exciting.
      The bird at the birdbath is a European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis). They absolutely love sunflower hearts and niger seeds and are also often seen on thistles and teasel plants picking off the seeds.
      They are very social and at least 6 visit every day, sitting contentedly at the feeder along with the greenfinches. They are increasingly common in Britain - partly because of garden feeders. Cute aren’t they!

    Absolutely Loved this! 🤩 ....Paul, did you pot up your hydrangeas with multi purpose compost or ericaceous compost please? I’ve only every used multi purpose compost with mine before but I note that you mentioned in previous videos that you plant them in an ericaceous bed With azaleas. I didn’t know they needed to be ericaceous so am thinking of repotting (I’m a container gardener) in ericaceous this year 🤷🏼‍♀️ what are your thoughts? ☺️

    • @paultsworld
      @paultsworld  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great, glad you liked my video Dawn!
      You can choose which compost - however two points: I have heard they respond and take up nutrients better in ericaceous compost and secondly if you have the mophead or lacecap hydrangeas they will be more blue in ericaceous and more red/pink in alkaline (multipurpose) compost.
      The paniculata hydrangeas' colour isn't affected by the PH of the soil.
      Having said all that - I always put mine in ericaceous compost and give them ericaceous (azalea) food. If yours are doing well and happy I'd leave them - but if you want to refresh the container and give them an 'umph' you could try ericaceous compost and food.
      Hope that helps.
