"Myth and Its Fabric: Spinning, Weaving, and Other Sacred Arts in New Spain Casta Paintings," with Evelina Gužauskytė

Casta paintings produced in New Spain (now Mexico) during the eighteenth century have been analyzed as visual testaments of a racially mixed and hierarchical society. This presentation focuses on the portrayal of culturally complex female protagonists in relation to the imagery of vestimentary culture and its production. While studying the references casta paintings make to Nahua, Christian, and ancient Greek mythologies, the presentation seeks to give voice to the silenced women through a reading of spinning, weaving, and sewing as narratives of hybridity and resistance.
Evelina Gužauskytė is Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Wellesley College. Her research explores the literatures and visual cultures of colonial Latin America, with a particular focus on the history of fashion, women’s and gender studies, the emergence of publications for women, comparative mythologies, and decolonial studies. Her research has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Spain, the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, and the John Carter Brown Library. This presentation is part of Gužauskytė's second book project.

Las pinturas de casta producidas en Nueva España (ahora México) durante el siglo XVIII han sido analizadas como testamentos visuales de una sociedad racialmente mixta y jerárquica. Esta sesión analiza la representación de protagonistas femeninas culturalmente complejas, en relación con las imágenes de la cultura de la vestimenta y su producción. A la vez que se estudian las referencias que las pinturas de casta hacen de las mitologías nahua, cristiana y de la antigua Grecia, la conferencia intenta dar voz a las mujeres silenciadas a través de una lectura del hilado, el tejido y la costura como narrativas de la hibridación y la resistencia
Evelina Gužauskytė es Associate Professor en el departamento de Español y Portugués en Wellesley College. Su investigación se centra en las literaturas y cultura visual de la América Latina colonial, con especial atención a la historia de la moda, los estudios de la mujer y de género, la aparición de publicaciones dirigidas a mujeres, la mitología comparada y los estudios de descolonización. Su investigación ha recibido ayuda financiera del National Endowment for the Humanities de Estados Unidos, la Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, el Ministerio de Cultura y Deporte de España, el Ministerio de Cultura de Lituania y la John Carter Brown Library.
