  • Fly along with AirMart's Demonstration Pilot, Matt Gabbard, as he demonstrates the capability of the Garmin GFC700 automatic flight control system. He's flying the ILS to runway 22 at Lexington, KY (KLEX) in a 2008 Cessna 350 equipped with the Garmin G1000 with Synthetic Vision Technology (SVT).

The capabilities of the G1000 are amazing

Wow I didn’t know there was that feature. That reminds me of the video game Starfox.

Can someone post a link that explains the little magenta diamond pegged to the loc needle? I tried to fly it today but was banking in the wrong direction

How did you make the green boxes in the background showing you basically the course you should be on show up?

The Highway in the Sky (HITS) boxes, if activated through the PFD, will correspond to the current source of navigation (GPS, localizer, etc.). They also will correspond to your selected altitude. There is a softkey on the PFD (fourth from the left) that is labeled "PFD". Pressing this button will give you options such as synthetic vision and HITS among others.

Is that synthetic vision and just happens to be flat terrain or is it some kind of simplified terrain display? and why is it dark on the horizon like a flashlight look?

it sort of overshot the capture on loc1.. is it always that bad ?

The wind being somewhat strong from the west is the reason it did this. Otherwise the GFC700 is extremely accurate.

Great video. Do you have to manually descend using the VS button?

Not during an approach with vertical guidance. The autopilot takes care of the descent.

You WILL have to adjust power for speed in most equipped airplanes. The learning curve in the G1000 is high. Once you learn it, the G1000/GFC700 is good enough to make you lose your proficiency if over used.

With such an amazing display of an approach, could it be tempting to cheat on minimums?

I have a question: How did you make 111.75 Green

On the G1000, when you load and activate an ILS approach, the system automatically displays the inbound final approach course, loads the correct LOC frequency, and changes the NAV source to LOC (green needle). This capability reduces the pilot's workload significantly (although he/she still needs to verify the information that was loaded is correct).

    Not a good tutorial

It doesn't appear to be intended as a tutorial, just a demonstration. A tutorial would include loading the approach, too.
