the dan farnworth book is so so good! im 16 and have been interested in becoming a paramedic basically my whole life and its definitely my favourite of all the books ive read. it really goes into the mental health side of things which is good

I think in general the universities care much more about what experience you have and your enthusiasm, but if you had a science (especially biology) that would probably put you in a stronger position ☺️
i have had 3 ambulances in a week in the north west and i just want to say thank you for saving my life paramedics aaron chris matthew emily sharon and oliver thank you to the NHS superheroes that have saved my life after i overdosed last week and i collapsed 2 times since thursday and they have helped me so much and for the passers by who called the ambulances thank you, especially to martin tingle i am so greatful that you found me. but anyway this is really helpful as now i know what to expect to happen and what to do during the time before starting and that it has made me realise how much i want to give back to people and to be able to help them in the life and death experiences and everything in between thank you again for all that they do.

Hey I've just been to watch your videos- I can't believe I've never come across them before they're great!! Do you find it difficult to find time to film and edit videos while studying?

It can be tricky and I also run an Etsy shop as well so balancing all three can be quite difficult but I tend to bulk film before I go on placement so I don't have to film when I'm on shifts and also means I won't be at a risk of breaching confidentiality or anything like that because I won't accidently talk about a patient or placement in general if that makes sense? ☺️

It's always interesting to see how different countries handle the training aspect for medical roles. I'm currently studying to qualify as a Generalist Medical Assistant, which in Romania allows me to work both as a nurse and a paramedic.

I found the first 4/5 weeks really quite hard because I'm not used to living away from my family, but the actual course is great and everything I anticipated even with covid restrictions ☺️☺️ I want to make a video about it but I have to use my dad's computer to edit and upload and I can't visit at the moment xxx

Hello! I'm almost 16 and I've wanted to study paramedic science for years and I will be applying to start the university course for next year in a few months time. By the time the course starts, if i get in, i will be 17 and should have my driving liscence a few months after starting the course. I really really want to do this but the only problem is I have asthma :( I know the course at the university I want to go to does a fitness test but was wondering if you had to do one? If yeah then what was involved?
Hey, that's great to hear I hope everything goes well for you! I really don't think that will be a problem for you but I don't want to say for definite. I didn't have to do a fitness test/medical assessment to get a place on a uni course and I don't know of anyone who has, I think they are mostly used at job interviews when you have finished the degree and are looking for employment with an NHS trust. For this I really recommend that you join a facebook group like 'So you want to be a paramedic' and I bet you will get a really clear answer, asthma is common and I bet someone will have had that experience. I really hope it doesn't get in your way, good luck! ❤️
Hey, so I’m in year 12 at the minute and I’m doing a chef course but my head is really leaning towards wanting to be a paramedic, it looks like such an amazing job, the BBC ambulance show is brilliant, the only thing I’m worried about is that would I be able to peruse it without the a levels as I’m not in a health and social care course. I’ve got some more things to ask you if you reply but I can’t think of them at the minute aha, I can’t find anything close to how good this video was and this video and chat could be the difference to me perusing this and not! thanks anyways❣️ also what are the gcse qualifications needed for paramedic science and if you don’t reach them is it strict or is there leeway
Hey it's really nice to hear from you, yes the show Ambulance is brilliant and made me seriously consider becoming a Paramedic too! I guess if you are already on a path to a different career it's important that you're really sure you want to do this, so doing as much research as you can will help you make up your mind xx I think to apply to most Paramedic Science courses you will likely be required to have three A levels, some Unis specifically ask for Biology or another Science course. I guess if you are in year 12 there could be the option of starting from scratch? Another way lots of people get onto the course is by doing an access course, which as far as I know takes a year at a college. I've talked to so many people who have taken this route, it's made for people that have been out of education for a while or that don't have the GCSEs or A levels to apply to Uni. If you are interested in this search for Access to higher education diploma, and I think there are some specifically for Paramedic Science. Unis usually require you to have 5 GCSEs with at least a grade 5 in English and Maths, but again if you did decide to do an access course then there would be leeway I think. If you have any more questions then don't hesitate, otherwise good luck!!
Thank you for your advice Lucy! :). I thought this video was great and I think the more information you can get out there for people, the better. (Also, the video editing seemed perfectly fine to me by the way!) I was wondering if you would have any advice for someone who already has a bachelors degree in a half-related subject (microbiology and molecular biology) who is looking to basically switch career paths to become a paramedic? I know it's a bit of a strange question for you as you won't have had to consider this situation at all, but I was just hoping you might have read about people in similar situations and you might know what steps I should take to help me with my goal? My main issue is that I can't get government funding for an undergraduate degree in Paramedic Science since I have already completed a government funded degree. So I would be looking to follow more of a 'work as you learn' or apprenticeship type path, however to do either of those, experience gained through volunteering is desired and unfortunately extremely hard to get. So I'm just looking for any nuggets of information or advice you can give, no matter how big or small. Also if you're stumped by my weird question then don't worry about it. I just thought it might be worth taking a long shot and asking anyway. Good luck with your degree and I hope you enjoy your time at university! :)
Hey, thank you so much for your lovely comment 🥰 Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you, I have been asking around for information on your situation and I haven't really gotten very far. It's such a shame there isn't more funding available, the only two things I thought might be useful to mention are the NHS bursary (about £5000 non repayable per year of study) which would be a start, although I don't know how you would manage tuition fees other than saving up yourself which is a job and a half. Other than that, there are still some NHS trusts in the UK which train Student paramedics on the job like an apprenticeship, if you wanted to look into that I know West Midlands Ambulance Service still runs that, although I believe it's being phased out. I'm so sorry I can't be more help, maybe put a post out on a paramedic group like 'So you want to be a paramedic' on Facebook, I bet someone has been in your position before. Good luck, I'm sure it's possible if you are determined to do it, let me know how it goes!! Lucy ❤️

I have confirmation from student loan company (student finance England) that paramedic science is now available to have a loan if you have a previous loan. I have proof they sent me if you want any info.

I’m only in Year 9 But I want to be a Paramedic when I leave lol, I’m starting to revise this year my brother is in University on a dorctor course and I’m gonna try learn on the job when I’m older obviously just more applying and that but if I do end up training on the job I’m gonna try get higher up and maybe even work in hospitals after I’ve been a paramedic for a couple years 5-7 years so when I’m about 30 but that’s all if it goes well xx

Hey, I think in general to apply to university you are required to have a GCSE (or the equivalent) in Maths and English, and A Levels (or the equivalent- highers in Scotland or btec's) or have done a college course. This is my best guess, I'm not 100% sure because there are many different routes to get into university but I think these are the qualifications most applicants use. It will also depend on the university you want to apply to, the entry requirements differ. If you get in touch with any universities you are thinking of applying to to ask, I'm sure they will be happy to help ☺️

Give St. John youth a look at if it’s in your area, I’ve been doing it since I was 10 and I’m 18 now and recently got accepted into a paramedicine course for next 2023 it’s a great way to be involved in the community and learn basic first aid skills and all that fun stuff
If you want to, you should go for it! That's what the course is for, they'll teach you everything and then you'll be able to practice it on placement for three years before you're out on your own ❤️

Hey, you shouldn't let that stop you! If you wanted to you could do a college access course which would be either 1 year or 2 which could let you apply to uni if you wanted, and 21 is not to late to start at all, I'm one of the younger people on my course there is a big range of ages, lots of people in their twenties and thirties even xxx
It’s constantly nagging me at the back of my brain about my past with mental health and what puts me off applying. I have been clear if everything for 6 years or so but they could just look at my background and just say no I don’t know what to do about

@@lucytegan4682 I am member of that group and have asked and it just totally depends on the situation they do it on a case by case basis.some people have been denied a place because of their past issues and some haven’t just the luck of the draw I think.

I'm not sure to be honest, if you're not affected by it at the moment it shouldn't have any impact on your career, although this might change if it did start affecting you ❤️ I think the best thing to do would be to post on a big Facebook group like 'so you want to be a paramedic' which has thousands of members. Because it is quite a specific issue it would be great for you to get in touch with someone that has had a similar experience xxx I know that having the possibility that a medical condition might get in the way of your plans can be very stressful, it certainly was for me but getting it completely cleared up by getting in touch with people who have been in that position was great and made me feel a lot better ❤️ I really hope everything goes well for you, good luck!
Did you have a driver's license when you applied? Is it a requirement to get in, and if not do you feel that having one would make your application look better?
Hey, I don't think subject choice is super important, if you take something like biology or healthcare you will be in a strong position. I did biology, English language and politics which is a bit of a mixed bag ☺️
Hi. Im currently in year 12, over quarantine i realised i would like to be a paramedic, but the i didn’t do a science for a levels, which i know you need for paramedic science. Do you know if it is a necessity to have a biology a level. And if i do need that does that mean after i finish my a levels i stay on and do a biology a level? Just wondering if you have any wisdom in that area or tips of what to do💕brilliant video!
Hi Layla, I'm not 100% sure but I don't think every uni requires a science subject, just have a look at some websites of unis you might consider applying to, and if you can't find the info there you can even email the uni to ask xxx I think in general the unis put more emphasis on your enthusiasm, experience and your personal statement, subjects and grades are a bit less important ❤️
So are you in 1st year? If you are, what do you actually do? Like CPR training, learning about different meds or is it more confusing topics? Also, is it mainly "practical" work or lesson / writing work?
Hey I'm so sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you 😂 I'd say it's about half practical half theory, we do a lot of clinical skills but also pharmacology, pathophysiology, academic writing modules and decision making theory stuff xxx Hope that helps!

Hi Alana, as far as I'm aware I don't think so, none of the unis I applied to had one and I haven't heard anyone say they had to- I think you can be asked if your training with an NHS trust but not with a university ☺️
No I don't see why you should, I know people on my course who have dyslexia and it hasn't stopped them ❤️ I am not really the right person to ask though, maybe try to get in touch with someone who has had that experience xx

Hey, that's great, and if it's what you really want you shouldn't let the distance stop you! You might just have to think about moving to study, I'm moving about two hours away from where I live now ☺️ There is also a chance that a uni closer to you could start running the course between now an when you start because you've got a bit of time if you're only in year 10, lots of new ones are popping up in the North at the minute 😁

Hey, I know that some Uni's will ask for one science, sometimes specifically Biology, but it varies from uni to uni so have a look at a few websites of the unis you might consider to see what they ask for. Even if it looks like you don't have the A levels they ask for, email and talk to the course director, because you might still be able to apply ❤️ Good luck!

Hi again, I have just posted on the Facebook group 'So you want to be a paramedic' and I'm afraid it seems unlikely 😪 A few replies said that once you have done a degree SFE will not find it and it is unlikely you will be able to access the NHS bursary either, although someone did say that if your previous degree was 3 years long, SFE may fund your first year of your next degree xxxx I'm so sorry about this, although maybe get into contact with SFE to make sure because what I have found out is only a few people's experiences ❤️❤️
Im going to sixth form this year and want to be a paramedic student - I picked 3 alevels psychology, sociology and history do you think if i apply for uni for paramedic science they will still offer me as I haven’t chosen to study a science subject ?

I want to go to university but do we need to have a paramedic science course as I want oxford or Cambridge to be one of my top universities but both universities do not give a paramedic science course. im not 100% sure but I have done some research and what I have found is that they do not give that course.
Hi Nasreen, thank you, you too ☺️ As far as I'm aware the only university courses that qualify you to register with the HCPC as a paramedic are Paramedic Science and Paramedic Practice, neither are run at Oxford or Cambridge, I also thought about applying there in year 12 xoxo Because the courses have to get HCPC registration they are all run very similarly, as the criteria for qualifying as a para is very strict. I know it's a bit disappointing but as I said I think all of the courses are run to a very high standard ❤️
Lucy Tegan Thank you. This has really helped me. I was researching yesterday and I've seen only about 7 universities that do that course so I'll keep that in mind. But thank you for your help. Also I'm not a massive book reader so was there any movies/shows that you watched that helped you get an insight into the paramedic life.
Aw no problem at all 😊 Yes the course is not run at many unis which is a bit of a shame x And yes the main on I absolutely love is a documentary series called 'ambulance' by the BBC, and another one I have been watching recently is '999:what's your emergency' which I have been watching on All4 😁

It's always interesting to see how different countries handle the training aspect for medical roles. I'm currently studying to qualify as a Generalist Medical Assistant, which in Romania allows me to work both as a nurse and a paramedic.

Hello! I'm almost 16 and I've wanted to study paramedic science for years and I will be applying to start the university course for next year in a few months time. By the time the course starts, if i get in, i will be 17 and should have my driving liscence a few months after starting the course. I really really want to do this but the only problem is I have asthma :( I know the course at the university I want to go to does a fitness test but was wondering if you had to do one? If yeah then what was involved?
Hey, that's great to hear I hope everything goes well for you! I really don't think that will be a problem for you but I don't want to say for definite. I didn't have to do a fitness test/medical assessment to get a place on a uni course and I don't know of anyone who has, I think they are mostly used at job interviews when you have finished the degree and are looking for employment with an NHS trust. For this I really recommend that you join a facebook group like 'So you want to be a paramedic' and I bet you will get a really clear answer, asthma is common and I bet someone will have had that experience. I really hope it doesn't get in your way, good luck! ❤️

Hey, so I’m in year 12 at the minute and I’m doing a chef course but my head is really leaning towards wanting to be a paramedic, it looks like such an amazing job, the BBC ambulance show is brilliant, the only thing I’m worried about is that would I be able to peruse it without the a levels as I’m not in a health and social care course.

Hey it's really nice to hear from you, yes the show Ambulance is brilliant and made me seriously consider becoming a Paramedic too!
I guess if you are already on a path to a different career it's important that you're really sure you want to do this, so doing as much research as you can will help you make up your mind xx
I think to apply to most Paramedic Science courses you will likely be required to have three A levels, some Unis specifically ask for Biology or another Science course. I guess if you are in year 12 there could be the option of starting from scratch?
Another way lots of people get onto the course is by doing an access course, which as far as I know takes a year at a college. I've talked to so many people who have taken this route, it's made for people that have been out of education for a while or that don't have the GCSEs or A levels to apply to Uni. If you are interested in this search for Access to higher education diploma, and I think there are some specifically for Paramedic Science.
Unis usually require you to have 5 GCSEs with at least a grade 5 in English and Maths, but again if you did decide to do an access course then there would be leeway I think.

I was wondering if you would have any advice for someone who already has a bachelors degree in a half-related subject (microbiology and molecular biology) who is looking to basically switch career paths to become a paramedic? I know it's a bit of a strange question for you as you won't have had to consider this situation at all, but I was just hoping you might have read about people in similar situations and you might know what steps I should take to help me with my goal?
My main issue is that I can't get government funding for an undergraduate degree in Paramedic Science since I have already completed a government funded degree. So I would be looking to follow more of a 'work as you learn' or apprenticeship type path, however to do either of those, experience gained through volunteering is desired and unfortunately extremely hard to get.
So I'm just looking for any nuggets of information or advice you can give, no matter how big or small. Also if you're stumped by my weird question then don't worry about it. I just thought it might be worth taking a long shot and asking anyway.

Hey, thank you so much for your lovely comment 🥰 Sorry it has taken me a while to get back to you, I have been asking around for information on your situation and I haven't really gotten very far.
It's such a shame there isn't more funding available, the only two things I thought might be useful to mention are the NHS bursary (about £5000 non repayable per year of study) which would be a start, although I don't know how you would manage tuition fees other than saving up yourself which is a job and a half. Other than that, there are still some NHS trusts in the UK which train Student paramedics on the job like an apprenticeship, if you wanted to look into that I know West Midlands Ambulance Service still runs that, although I believe it's being phased out.
I'm so sorry I can't be more help, maybe put a post out on a paramedic group like 'So you want to be a paramedic' on Facebook, I bet someone has been in your position before.

I have confirmation from student loan company (student finance England) that paramedic science is now available to have a loan if you have a previous loan. Hey, I think in general to apply to university you are required to have a GCSE (or the equivalent) in Maths and English, and A Levels (or the equivalent- highers in Scotland or btec's) or have done a college course. This is my best guess, I'm not 100% sure because there are many different routes to get into university but I think these are the qualifications most applicants use. It will also depend on the university you want to apply to, the entry requirements differ. If you get in touch with any universities you are thinking of applying to to ask, I'm sure they will be happy to help ☺️

Give St. John youth a look at if it’s in your area, I’ve been doing it since I was 10 and I’m 18 now and recently got accepted into a paramedicine course for next 2023 it’s a great way to be involved in the community and learn basic first aid skills and all that fun stuff

If you want to, you should go for it! That's what the course is for, they'll teach you everything and then you'll be able to practice it on placement for three years before you're out on your own ❤️

Hey, you shouldn't let that stop you! If you wanted to you could do a college access course which would be either 1 year or 2 which could let you apply to uni if you wanted, and 21 is not to late to start at all, I'm one of the younger people on my course there is a big range of ages, lots of people in their twenties and thirties even xxx

It’s constantly nagging me at the back of my brain about my past with mental health and what puts me off applying. I have been clear if everything for 6 years or so but they could just look at my background and just say no I don’t know what to do about

I'm not sure to be honest, if you're not affected by it at the moment it shouldn't have any impact on your career, although this might change if it did start affecting you ❤️ I think the best thing to do would be to post on a big Facebook group like 'so you want to be a paramedic' which has thousands of members. Because it is quite a specific issue it would be great for you to get in touch with someone that has had a similar experience xxx I know that having the possibility that a medical condition might get in the way of your plans can be very stressful, it certainly was for me but getting it completely cleared up by getting in touch with people who have been in that position was great and made me feel a lot better ❤️ I really hope everything goes well for you, good luck!

Hi. Im currently in year 12, over quarantine i realised i would like to be a paramedic, but the i didn’t do a science for a levels, which i know you need for paramedic science. Do you know if it is a necessity to have a biology a level. And if i do need that does that mean after i finish my a levels i stay on and do a biology a level? Hi Layla, I'm not 100% sure but I don't think every uni requires a science subject, just have a look at some websites of unis you might consider applying to, and if you can't find the info there you can even email the uni to ask xxx I think in general the unis put more emphasis on your enthusiasm, experience and your personal statement, subjects and grades are a bit less important ❤️
So are you in 1st year? If you are, what do you actually do? Like CPR training, learning about different meds or is it more confusing topics? Also, is it mainly "practical" work or lesson / writing work?

Hi Alana, as far as I'm aware I don't think so, none of the unis I applied to had one and I haven't heard anyone say they had to- I think you can be asked if your training with an NHS trust but not with a university ☺️

Hey, that's great, and if it's what you really want you shouldn't let the distance stop you! You might just have to think about moving to study, I'm moving about two hours away from where I live now ☺️ There is also a chance that a uni closer to you could start running the course between now an when you start because you've got a bit of time if you're only in year 10, lots of new ones are popping up in the North at the minute 😁

Hey, I know that some Uni's will ask for one science, sometimes specifically Biology, but it varies from uni to uni so have a look at a few websites of the unis you might consider to see what they ask for. Even if it looks like you don't have the A levels they ask for, email and talk to the course director, because you might still be able to apply ❤️ Good luck!

Hi again, I have just posted on the Facebook group 'So you want to be a paramedic' and I'm afraid it seems unlikely 😪 A few replies said that once you have done a degree SFE will not find it and it is unlikely you will be able to access the NHS bursary either, although someone did say that if your previous degree was 3 years long, SFE may fund your first year of your next degree xxxx I'm so sorry about this, although maybe get into contact with SFE to make sure because what I have found out is only a few people's experiences ❤️❤️

I want to go to university but do we need to have a paramedic science course as I want oxford or Cambridge to be one of my top universities but both universities do not give a paramedic science course. im not 100% sure but I have done some research and what I have found is that they do not give that course.
Hi Nasreen, thank you, you too ☺️ As far as I'm aware the only university courses that qualify you to register with the HCPC as a paramedic are Paramedic Science and Paramedic Practice, neither are run at Oxford or Cambridge, I also thought about applying there in year 12 xoxo Because the courses have to get HCPC registration they are all run very similarly, as the criteria for qualifying as a para is very strict. I know it's a bit disappointing but as I said I think all of the courses are run to a very high standard ❤️
