Went thru cancer 17 years ago. Am perfectly fine now. But all the time during cancer treatments I’d blast the soundtrack.
I’ve seen it 5 times on stage…. Went to NYC was at the theater and my boyfriend has promised me he will take me to see it for Thanksgiving next year

I hate the stage play so much, its missing 90% of the story, and replaces it with infantile songs. I want the dark story brought to life, not the lame kids version done on stage. Give us the novel.

@@lilmatty33059 while it would be neat to have the original stars in the roles....they are much too old now. Menzel is 52 and Chenoweth is 55. It would be ridiculous to see them trying to play teenagers - young women. Had they done an animated version it would have worked perfectly. Rent cast most of the original cast in the movie version and I read a bunch of posts about them all being too old.

I have followed the Wizard of Oz since I was 8 (way back in 1950ish). I have read the books, and loved the Gregory Maguire renditions of Wicked, the Son of the Witch, A Lion Among Men, and Out of Oz. I believe that Dorothy when compared with Elphaba was a wimp. I also saw Wicked on Broadway. I love Elphaba.!
The novels are so good, dark and ambient, dealing with suicide genocide and dark depths of human psyche when oustered by community. The musical.. well its a stupid kids show peppered with childish music. Its like comparing HP Lovecraft to Barney the Dinosaur. Elphaba is a dark romantic figure that speaks volumes to the many who have been in her place. Except the singing one that dances on stage, she's a dolt. Too bad this movie is taking after the stage play instead of the heavier and more serious tones from the novels.
This will not transpose to screen as well as you think it will. You needed Menzel & Chenoweth. These actress you cast are not Broadways BEST! good luck.

Why don't they just make a stage version especially recorded for tv. Just like Hamilton was released, I would rather be able to rewatch the stage version. Then if the movie does bomb, who cares, the stage version will still be around to watch and listen too.
Agreed! My favorite versions of both "CATS" and "Sweeney Todd" are the recorded stage versions. IMO, both stories lost a bit of the magic in the movies.

If you like the story of "Wicked" you might want to check out some of Gregory Maguire's other books, such as "Mirror Mirror" (Snow White character adaptation) and "Confessions of An Ugly Step-sister" (Cinderella character adaptation) and many more

Sadly most the people familiar with Wicked know nothing about the novels, they've only seen its stage version, peppered with children's music. They have no clue how ambient and dark the books get. It deals with suicide, hell Genocide, and many many other dark aspects of humanity. The stage play, is literally kids stuff. Comparing HP Lovecraft to Barney the Dinosaur.

Pleeeease tell me they didn't also adapt "Nessa" for this.... the book focuses on her disability being an important part of her transformation.... and makes her demise all the stronger. I understand adapting the stage play to focus on her legs.... as it might be hard to pull off finding an armless stage musical actor in each part of a tour.... but it made more sense knowing how she meets her end in the original.

You are the first person I saw that loved them both. I love the books, they are dark, atmospheric, and lets you experience the downward spiral she goes through even at its bloodiest moments. But the stage play, a kids version, peppered with children's songs. I can't tolerate it, its like comparing HP Lovecraft to Barney the Dinosaur.
@@anubispatron You are right in that they are two very different things. The book is a political thriller (I'm not sure that's quite the right word, but it's the best I can come up with at the moment) with a very, very dark story line, which is why I enjoyed it so much. I believe it would make a great movie (or series of movies, since there is so much story to tell) if done as a serious take on the book. However, a Broadway show is a much different thing. It is impossible to fit that much story into a 2 1/2 hour production. I have played in the pit orchestra for over 150 different shows, and I have to say that I love Wicked not only for what I consider a terrific score, but how they managed to take a very deep and complicated book, and make a very concise and entertaining show about two very different women and their problematic friendship. It's the old story of "I liked the book and hated the movie." I always felt that as long as it's understood that they are two very different artforms, then they can be enjoyed for what they are.

Disappointing I know. Instead of getting the dark themed novel, we get dancing fairies and singing munchkins. Pathetic consumption for the mouth breathing public. At least it will be child friendly now.

The novels are dark, themes of isolation, suicide, genocide, love that can never be reciprocated. The stage play, a mouth breathers dream of dancing fairies and singing munchkins, its like turning H.P Lovecraft's masterpieces into children's shows for those with an IQ so low they could scarcely grasp at the adult themes behind the novels. Too bad this movie is adapting from the staged version, this could have been a gothic work of art. Now its kid friendly, lame.

There are so many things wrong with the first and most important being the casting choice for Fieryo Tigelaar. He was whitewashed in the stage musical (original cast) and was now whitewashed in the film adaptation. As stated in the book, Fieryo has dark, "ochre" color skin and had "blue markings" made with paint on his skin. Although his ethnicity is not stated, that's a damn clear way of implying he's a person of color. Not a pale white man.
Don’t get me started on Ariana wrecking Ethan’s marriage and them two now “dating” (or whatever you want to call it)… True or not, he left his wife and practically newborn for her. Talk about a real piece of sh**.
The last thing is the age. Was it really *that* difficult to cast a 14 year old to portray Nessarose (read the book!!!!) and two women between 18-24 years old for Elphaba, Galinda, Fieyro, and Boq? Clearly so. That being said, you can’t tell Idina she’s too old to portray Elphaba in the film adaptation and then cast a f’ing 38 year old.
This film adaptation is going to be bad, but not CATS-level bad.
This is a film adaptation of the musical. You keep referencing how this film is not following the way things were in the book, and they're perpetuating the "problems" of the stage musical... well, yes. It's an adaptation of the film musical. Literally 0 of your points are valid.
1. Fiyero's race - doesn't matter. It's not stated that way in the musical. In fact the only races they've changed from the traditional musical are the opposite of "white washing" - but Fiyero's race isn't integral to the plot. And again, it's an adaptation of the musical which has already made that choice.
2. Lots of celebrities have questionable personal lives. I'm not going to condone or celebrate it, but I also don't care about it. It will have no effect on the quality of the film. Is Kristen Stewart's fling with the direct why Snow White was bad?
3. Idina menzel was 32 when Wicked opened. And shes *52* now. How are you going to complain about a 38 year old being cast? Shes a WHOLE lot closer to Idina's age when the show opened than Idina is now. A 52 year old screlcher would be laughably bad.
Plus, if you're going to champion race as you did in point 1 - complaining about a POC portraying the character who is actually ostracized specifically for the color of her skin...and wanting to take her out for a FAR too old white lady... is a pretty f'n weird take

Although I have the highest hopes for this motion picture, I am a little disappointed I have to wait so long to see it. Especially when much of it is already been filmed.
I hope this is not going to be a repeat of what the Phantom Of the Opera motion picture was. That is to say, if you saw the Phantom musical first, you tended not to like the movie. If you saw the motion picture first, then you tended not to like the musical. Or at least that’s what I’ve seen with everyone that I’ve taken to see the Broadway play and those who have watch the video first.
I have seen Wicked about five times, all on Broadway. I have gotten used to what’s going to happen, when it’s going to happen and how it’s gonna happen. All that will change with a major motion picture. That will not take away the magical quality and staying power of Wicked on Broadway.
Well the biggest reason the Phantom of the Opera picture was received the way it was had way more to do with taking a character who was supposed to have a shockingly horrible face and the singing voice of an angel... and instead making him have the face of an angel and a shockingly horrible singing voice. It just inherently changed the story.
Everyone cast in this is at least a decent singer (Ariana Grande's tendency for lack of diction aside). The biggest early turnoff for Wicked honestly is making it a 2-part cash grab. And that's a big one

Hope not. I hate that it's being in 2 parts; I'd pay double the price for a movie ticket and have a half hour intermission for loo and snack breaks.

I'm so excited for this! Wicked is really my favorite musical. It's the musical that made me want try doing the musicals too.
I read the novels in the 90's. Dark, dealing with subjects like suicide, genocide, Isolation, greed. Very deep and gothic themes, splashed with some hints of romance and violence. The stage play... I just couldn't believe they turned such a dark dark story into a day at Barney the Dinosaurs. Childish, dumb, created for mouth breathing PG audience with a thirst for cheesiness and absurdity. Its sad that the Film is adapting from the kids version instead of the original adult themed novels.
This is hardly a first look. It’s a montage of past productions including OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL. Lame.
Looking forward to seeing it! Now, if they could just get "Sunset Boulevard" with Glenn Close filmed and in theaters too!
30th Definitely excited for Wicked parts 1 & 2 ........I was also waiting for a continuation of Oz the Great and Powerful.......it left US hanging ..... to me it seems there is room for one more movie to fill in the Gap before Dorothy arrives .....WWE was Ugly and Powerless / and WWW flew Off Vowing Revenge .......but LEft her Iconic HUge Crystal Ball.......it should be written where somehow she plots to get The crystal Ball back, and in the process kidnaps China Girl / the Wizard Loves her..........and kills her / smashes her.........Hence the Wizard Never forgives her and Vows Revenge - hence: when he Gets Dorothy to Kill her.....
Honestly, I think it is unnecessary to split it into 2 films. If they can make "Les Miserables" or "Phantom of the Opera" in one movie, they could've done it with "Wicked."
Not to mention if you just watch the musical is a normal movie length. You could have it virtually 1 for 1 without having an overly long movie. Honestly im worried the story will be hurt by stretching it out to be 2 separate movies
