Blood curling!! This is such an incredible opera and this particular production is unbelievably great. Met On Demand has about five versions of this on its website from over the years. But this one from 1987 is the one to watch! The orchestra is on fire! And Placido's voice fills the hall like no other can. His acting was wonderful too.
Incredible I wish I could've seen pavarotti do this piece
He would have been great in the 70s for this. However, in his last Turandot in 1997 his voice was surprisingly still quite good however, he could not move and could not deliver the drama and acting which has to go together for a great opera. From mid 80s on
From mid 1980s because of his weight he unfortunately was lumbering on the stage. He could not even hit the gong but had someone else do it. If you only listened to it however, it was still excellent. But opera is theatre and music. It is not a gala. You also need great acting otherwise, it becomes quite stale.
Totally agree with you about acting. I am new to Opera but even I know it's not enough to have a great voice, wear a great costume and be on a great set. You must be able to act. One of my favorites is Elina Garance because she's such a wonderful actress. Placido's acting was very good here.@@BessarionBlackrose-be3oh
