The 1999 Cricket World Cup (officially known as ICC Cricket World Cup '99) was the seventh edition of the Cricket World Cup, organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC). It was hosted primarily by England, with Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Netherlands acted as the co-hosts. The tournament was won by Australia, who beat Pakistan by 8 wickets in the final at Lord's Cricket Ground in London. New Zealand and South Africa were the other semi-finalists.

Decline actually began post McGrath, Warne retirement in 2007. Well they won Tests series that yr vs SL & India(If not for Sydney controversy the series could potentially drawn). They lost triangular series 1st time in 5 yrs at home to India, loss to SA at home in Tests etc. But yes they won ICC CT in 2009 & other tournaments although not with that dominance
That was a golden era of cricket because a lot of teams were at their peak especially SA, Ind, SL, Pak etc but Australia was the best team. In fact, teams like Zimbabwe and Kenya were good too.

Ind was not at their peak. Ind reached their peak in 2011. That 2011 Ind side which won the cup was probably the most complete ever. After that, the second best is probably the current Indian team. The only thing which probably they missed in 2011 was a threatening quick -- Yes there was Zaheer but he was not consistently threatening. The current team has that in Bumrah and Siraj but doesn't have good part time bowlers and imo quality of batting is lesser than 2011.

Pakistan was the best team in cricket world cup 1999, only threat was South Africa which lost the semi final. Australia was far behind Pakistan in performance and quality but unfortunately Pakistan lost due to bad performance maybe due to match fixing. Saeed Anwar started beautifully and dominantly but so surprisingly started changing bat grip and soon after changing bat grip got bowled on very next ball which is the huge question mark. Other batsmen like Ijaz, Moin Khan, Azhar Mehood and Wasim Akram played poor shorts which raise a lot of questions but unfortunately no investigation done.

Brother not sure about this match. But few games against Aus in early 90s were fixed. 1994 singer cup game in Sri and the Wills cup final in Lahore in 94 immediately comes to mind.
Plus internal fighting and disagreement to play under certain captains further caused the underachievement. 1993 WSC in Aus under Miandad was a prime example.

Not camera work actually playgrounds wear bigger that time . If we see the stadiums Down Under of the 80s & 90s, they used to be really big. Players used to run fours easily as the square and the straight boundaries use to be no less than 80-85m.
This gave a chance to the fielding team to defend a low score as well. But nowadays, even a score of 320-330 is not a winning score courtesy to the shrinking size of the playing field. With the increasing size of bats, the situation has only worsened.
