He was as classy as Dravid and a destroyer like Sachin. But he lost his daughter to illness in the middle of his career and he never recovered from that shock. if not for that tragedy he would have been one of the greatest ever batsmen to play the game. Nayan Mongia was certainly not a liability. He had amazing wicket-keeping skills. He was very safe behind stumps but average with the bat. Initially MSD was not very good with his keeping skills but he learnt even then he used to miss because he was a batter who could keep and Mongia was a keeper who could bat.

Nayan Mongia was certainly not a liability. He had amazing wicket-keeping skills. He was very safe behind stumps but average with the bat. Initially MSD was not very good with his keeping skills but he learnt even then he used to miss because he was a batter who could keep and Mongia was a keeper who could bat.
That time wicket keepers worldwide used to be specialists.

It was really an upset at that time because before this WC Pakistan smashed India in India in the Tri-nation and won all the games against India and before that Pakistan defeated India in Chennai and Kolkata Tests. Pakistan at that stage were not qualified for Semi, and had already lost against SA. He was surely not taking it as practice game. Otherwise, he should have played Waqar and Mushtaq Ahmed. He tried to insult the opposition. Beging active cricketer, he chose to disgrace his values by insulting opposition. Few hours later, God taught him good lesson.
