    Very useful video, thanks James.
    I did my last license with my Thai wife, and vowed I'd never do it again; awful experience!
    And good to hear the instruction video is now in English, sitting through that in Thai, plus an hours wait for it to start was hell!!!!

    You can overcome this by applying for an international driver’s licence before you leave your country.It is valid for 12 months.

    I saw truck driving test being done on these test driving courses. Anyone driving an LPG car, these do need depending upon the age of the LPG tank a certificate from a certified engineer about its safety and that the tubing is leak free in order to be allowed to get your vehicle tested.

    good explanation. few yrs ago I got my Thai mcy license from scratch. Watch the vid. Take the computer written test. Do the road test on that course you showed. Figured having driven for 40+yrs I won't have a problem with the written test. Failed two times in a row... there was quite a bit of 'thai logic' and screwy questions on the test, so after the second time down I found an english version of the test online with all the questions and all the answers, read it through, then went for the third time and passed.
    Next was the scheduled course test. 30 falang line up and go through the obstacle course. Simple and basic. I was last person, and didn't make it all the way on the 6" wide wooden plank section but I don't think any of the 'checkers' bothered watching me the last guy and I was passed. Who drives on a 6" wooden beam anyways!?
    My point of view is that the test, the movie, especially the rule book, and the course test were nothing but a joke. All the Thais know it is, if you took the tests you would say it is. But just do it and get your license. And the movie and written test were specifically for a Mcy license - but neither said or trained about anything to do with driving a Mcy. No wonder there are so many people splattering their brains all over the street.

    I have done this on my own many times. No thai help but with many things, thai help is good. I did both my motorcycle and car. First time ever driving right hand drive and had to do parallel park and some other easy things.
    The small room was always used for foreigners and the big for locals or at least every time I went. Pretty cheap. New license takes a bit of work and then as you said 4-5 hours on site. renewals should take less.
    I was on Tourist visas and you could only get one year at a time. They changed that a few years ago and made it easier.

    Hi James, "don't make this hard" 555
    I guess it's an expat thing living in an expat enclave. I've done Thai car and motorcycle licence renewals for the last 16 years in both Nakhon Si Thammarat and Bangkok. Never even seen an agent or "placeholder" and definitely not needed. In and out in 2-3 hours max. Guess some foreigners are happy to pay unneccessarily. I guess that's OK if they think it's easier. Whatever, still makes it nice to have hand held by a happy, smiling Thai lady :) Chok dee and drive/ride safe!

    $169 to avoid the stress of potentially forgetting something, bringing the wrong something, not having a needed copy of something, and/or misunderstanding the instructions and having to come back another day? That’s the bargain of a lifetime! Thank you for sharing this experience and the contact information for Tik Tok Services. I’ve added this to my “if I ever make it to Thailand” file.
    One question: I’ve heard that if you have both a motor vehicle and motorcycle license from some countries you do not have to take some of the tests (maybe the practical?). Do you know if this is true? I have a US non-commercial driver license and motorcycle license. I’d love to know if these can just be “converted” to the Thai equivalents. Thanks, in advance, if you’re able to answer!

    • @ChocolateManInThailand
      @ChocolateManInThailand  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, many overseas licenses will convert. They must be in english or have an official translation to accompany them.

    • @kennethboehnen271
      @kennethboehnen271 ปีที่แล้ว

      $169 is too high of a bribe to pay. I can afford it. That's not the point. Today, I brought my MC endorsed DL, International DL, PP, 10-year visa, residence certificate, medical certificate, and my online training certificate. I was denied because my Driver's License does it does not specify that it pertains to a car/passenger vehicle. No US DL state explicitly that it pertains to a car. It's assumed. I explained that endorsements are in addition to the standard license. But this fell on deaf ears. I won't pay $169 to an agency when I have everything they require. I got my visa and bank account on my own, and I'll get this too, without paying a bribe. It's personal now.
