Apple Car play is definitely something I want in a new vehicle. Beyond tech, the only other thing that’s more important to me when picking my next truck is engine options
Yes!!!! A VERY BAD decision, period! It’s bad enough I have to pay for the app and auto start but to delete CarPlay is totally idiotic!! I’ve owned 6 brand new GM trucks and 2 from your dealership. Thanks for the update.
You buy electric car and that's what you get you're going to pay more down the road you're going to fail electric and look for charging station is a pain
Yes car play was a must for me and not just car play but wireless car play. However, I agree with you on using GMs built in Google maps over using maps on my iPhone. I also find myself asking google for information over Siri.
Android Auto is a must for me. I use it 100% of the time I get in my vehicle. I'm not an Apple fan but that doesn't mean Apple users shouldn't be able to share the same experience. Feasibility and functionality in the infotainment are very big draws for car purchases.
CarPlay is a must. I have a ‘23 Sierra and use CarPlay 95% of the time. I use Spotify and like to be able to quickly look at my calendar for the day, my texts, etc. I also hate the idea of the added subscription cost.
I just bought a 2023 Z-71 Silverado LTZ & Car Play was a major deciding factor in the vehicle I bought. I traded a 2017 Silverado but it had Car Play in the Apps
I love my Apple CarPlay and it will be in any vehicle I consider in the future. I use Apple music every time I get in my car and prefer my Apple Maps over integrated subscription based maps.
Carplay is a major decision factor for me. I'm trying to figure out if this a deal-breaker for the 2023 GMC Yukon... if it doesn't support carplay, that's going to take it out of the running!
The tech available in my 23 Sierra was one of the main drivers for me to purchase; Tech is also one of the primary reasons I choose to purchase or upgrade a vehicle. The native tech offered in the Sierra is leaps and bounds above what my 18 Sierra had to offer and shows promise. However, I still prefer to use CarPlay 90% of the time. If GM can figure out how to offer a seamless integration with my iPhone without compromising features and connectivity, I could look past CarPlay as a requirement. I also hate the Subscription as a Service model in my vehicle...hate it.
Is your CarPlay working? Mine is 22 sierra but my CarPlay isn’t working. I connect through the iPhone and it’s the correct steps. But when I choose the CarPlay setting. It just says “choose a CarPlay phone” when I choose my phone it just says it couldn’t connect. I tried both wireless and wired
It’s been eight months since this terrible situation happened. A little overview about what kind of cars I have been driving. I am a third generation GM customer. Both of my grandfathers would have only a GM car. Same is true for my dad for the most part. It was true for me almost all the time. I have had a lot of GM vehicles. But what is more important for me than even having a GM car is Apple CarPlay. I will never have a car that doesn’t work with Apple CarPlay. Zero. None. I hoped for months that they would see the blowback and change their minds. But no. So I had to do what I promised them I would do. If you go and look in my garage, you will see a Toyota. I never thought I would ever have a Toyota. But they gave me what I needed and it has the best Apple CarPlay system I have ever seen. I still hope that GM will figure it out. I would love to come home. But no CarPlay means no more GM cars for me.
I was planning to get the new Equinox Ev when my Buick lease is up in 2 years, but now no way. No matter how the try to sugar coat it, the real reason they are dropping CarPlay and android auto because they want to charge a monthly fee for their maps and other apps. Really scummy.
I’ve been waiting for this ev for a long while. It’s finally here and looking amazing and, despite certain problems, I was seriously ready to go electric…then they said no Apple CarPlay. Now I’m looking for other options. I HATE listening to music via Bluetooth, the sound is horrible. This was a STUPID move, I’d rather just buy something else. Apple CarPlay is what brought me to GM in the first place. So disappointing.
Brian GM hasn't done better with the in vehicle navigation system. I used it to locate a business in my town and it had me heading in the wrong direction so, GM has a lot of work to do in order to make their navigation work right. This is the navigation in my 2023 GMC Denali 3500 HD.
In your specific case, I don't think you'll have a problem if you buy a future GM vehicle. Remember, he said that the infotainment will be done by Google. That means Google Maps and/or Waze. Those two navigation apps are vastly superior to anything GM has ever done. That said, not supporting Carplay or Android Auto is still a very dumb idea.
@@rvboyett I say thanks that GM is only using their apps and navigation in EV for now. I will say Googles Navigation is way better than GM’s and Apple Maps. They both had me going in the wrong direction. Google Maps put me right in the parking lot of the business I was looking for. I do agree Google work with GM isn’t all bad but they need to work on fixing their security for sure.
Picked up a 22 Silverado last month and wireless apple car play was a must. Without it as an option in the future is insane. I agree they must knock it out of the park… heck I can’t even get my gm wireless phone charger to work properly. 😢
If GMC doesn't offer the new CarPlay OS, I will straight up buy an F250 Limited instead of the throwing my money at that beautiful Sierra 2500 Denali Ultimate. Yes, it's that big of a deal to me.
Hey Brian, good stuff as always! So my last 3 vehicles have all had apple carplay/android auto…all 3 are various GM brands/models. I 💯 agree that this would be a big mistake. GM can’t possibly need electric charging info, etc. provided by Google monitoring that desperately. It’s bad enough manufacturers are trying to cram EV’s down consumers throats already, this is only going to make things worse IMO.
When I was first looking for a new to me car one of the things I wanted to have was Android auto but I realized that I couldn't afford a vehicle with that feature.
I bought a new car a year ago. I have an iPhone, so I wanted CarPlay for Apple. However, I didn’t buy the car because it was compatible that way, but I was glad it was. That in mind, not having it is one thing, having something totally incompatible is something else. I would not buy GM because it’s not compatible. I would absolutely not get trapped into some kind of subscription service. The hell with that.
3:25 Honestly it doesn’t matter how good of an infotainment software GM and Google collaborated on, fact of the matter it’s outdated as soon as the car rolls off the lot (and I can guarantee they won’t support for very long either). As long as you have iPhone or Android phone with the latest update AA/AC is never outdated. I damn sure ain’t paying a subscription for it either.
Yeah the average Android phone gets 3-4 years of updates, if that. I don’t want to think about being tied to a piece of hardware for 10+ years in a car. Google sold 27 million pixel phones last year, and only updates them for around 4-5 years. Chevy sold 200k equinoxes, and we’re supposed to believe they’ll keep the system up to date? Google has ~100x as many potential subscribers to pull revenue from in device sales for a year, and even they decide at a certain point it’s not worth the trouble to update.
Apple CarPlay is a must for me. All my music is through Apple. I just ordered a HD Denali Ultimate. This will be my last GM product if I can’t have Apple CarPlay. Everything I do is through Apple. Google does not want me to use Apple. I have been buying GM for 30 years. This will come to an end which will be very sad for me.
I have a 22 Terrain and a 23 Silverado. I use a my own hotspot that plugs into the OBD which uses the positive and negative terminals of the OBD. If I don't sit in my vehicle and set my phone to the hotspot which all my other GM vehicles did automatically OnStar takes over and shows "shop plans" and sometime during my drive using my hotspot OnStar takes over and shop plans come again. Then I have to pull over to connect the hotspot back up. I've told both dealerships about it and they said GM wants to sell OnStar subscriptions and there is no fix. I told them both I won't purchase another GM product until OnStar is gone. They both said that won't ever happen I replied take me off your customer list.
I’m about to sell my Range Rover and I wanted to get a Denali, but the lack of CarPlay is a showstopper. Completely took all GMC vehicles off the table.
I had every intention of buying a Chevy Blazer EV when I move back to the states later this year or next year. No chance anymore unless it comes with CarPlay. The Ford Mustang Mach-E will probably be my top choice now
we're all jumping the gun on GM's decision for this. Let's jsut wait and see and maybe it's a way better system as it's designed by GM for their vehicles as Android Auto is a 3rd party app not designed by GM.
@@toner37 true, I’ll check out the reviews in depth but bought a Ford Escape instead a few weeks back. They will really have to nail it. The escape has been my favorite car I’ve ever had so far.

@@toner37 100% true. Just disappointed because I needed a car this year but won’t jump to buy new tech until it’s been thoroughly reviewed and all the kinks worked out. I was hoping for a Chevy Blazer EV with the current tech that’s in their other cars because I’ve loved it and had 0 issues with it. I’ll consider another Chevy in 10 years or so
Bluetooth is the must. Everything else really doesn't matter. I actually like my phone to have control over my radio. It's like having a controller in my vehicle.
As soon as I heard about this I knew what was up, subscriptions for every car feature and various levels of feature subscriptions! The reason for CarPlay and android auto integration is for consumers to be able to use the device they use the most on a daily basis as seamlessly as possible without having to setup and configure another separate device and extra costs to the consumer! This has gone out the window and opens up a can of costly wormy worms for the consumer. I won’t be buying any GM vehicle or other brands if they don’t support CarPlay or android auto period!
Huge mistake and yeah the new google maps new interface in the 2023 Silverado makes users use CarPlay less but it is still a huge miss with Apple’s coverage in the US. They will lose sales with this for sure.
Buying a vehicle because it has or doesn't have Apple car play is not a factor for me. There's always something else. Its not like you live in your car.
Always use Android Auto, especially if wireless is a big one for me. You said it, it really comes down to collecting subscriptions. Remember GM had a survey that claimed buyers were willing to pay like $120 a month for subscriptions... which is BS in my mind.
This is strategic. First the Gov is forcing EV's through regulation and this is one way to combat it. Drive sales down for that product by eliminating niceties. Second it may also force both Apple and Android to rethink their proprietary type systems for connecting to vehicles. There is no reason there cant be once solidary and standard connection type. This game of having to deal with both only costs us the buyers in the long run through R and D at both the device manufacturers and the auto manufacturers. Just like Apple is being forced away from the lighting charger to an industry standard usb-c like EVERY other newer device both of them need to be forced on to a standard contestability for autos. I'm not saying your wrong about the subscription thing and I believe that will be challenged in court as once you buy something that is physical you own it and if it is included physically with that something it should technically be yours to use while you own it without paying additional fee's. Software can get away with that because the EULA clearly states you don't actually own the software you simply use it but that's a different story when it comes to vehicles and the amount of money we pay for them.
I was really excited about getting a new GM, because I currently have wired carplay and was excited about the new wireless carplay. So, please do not take away my carplay!!!
With the HUGE increase in prices of the trucks, incorporating a mandatory 3 year subscription into the MSRP, and now this, General Motors is not making any friends!
100% Apple Car Play was a HUGE factor in my last vehicle purchase. I will immediately eliminate GM vehicles from my shopping list if they do this. Also, subscription based services? Have they not learned from BMW? Didn’t go well…
As you said Apple car play and android auto should still be offered. And if GM makes the system really good users will naturally use it instead of being forced.
Every other company will be doing this as well. This trend is already showing itself in some other brands. You'll be paying a subscription for featured that were once considered standard.
CarPlay is an absolute must. The integration of both CarPlay and Android Auto was a massive positive step forward. Sad to say this is just history repeating itself with GM. They always seem to get things right just before they kill it off.
This is strategic. First the Gov is forcing EV's through regulation and this is one way to combat it. Drive sales down for that product by eliminating niceties. I have a gmc sierra now. If they remove apple car play in the future and charge for subscriptions for the radio im never buying another GM truck. Thats BS
I’ve been a gm customer for about 35 years, including two corvettes. I will never buy another car without CarPlay. I am in the market for an EV in the next 12 months and GM just got taken off the list. I hope they’re satisfied.
CarPlay is a must!!!! If GM does go through with this I’ll never buy another GM product!!! This is just because they want to be greedy and want more money from people with their stupid subscription like Toyota and having to get a subscription to have remote start
With the price of vehicles today (NEW VEHICLES), all the added "SUBSCRIPTION" bullshit charges are ABSOLUTLEY DEAL BREAKERS!!! Being nickel and dimed after the wallet has already been violated only adds insult to injury. I WANT a new 2500HD so bad right now, but costs are insane. Luckily, for now, I should be able to use the system I have grown to love in Apple. And agree if the user experience is better, I have no problem switching to a new platform. But to pay for it when there are options so much better or equal, or even close if not equal ... is not happening. I will go elsewhere if need be. BTW Brian, I'd love to buy a truck from you. I LOATH the dealer experience.
My life revolves around Apple to make my life easier, from music, navigation, contacts, banking, security, and so many other parts of life. If GM decision to eliminate Apple Car Play from their vehicles, I will not consider any GM vehicle in the future. I dont care how GM designed, or included Google into a new system platform, or how fantastic it may be, if Car Play isn't offered FREE, I will not step inside a GM dealership.
They hate Apple Car Play because they lose money when people don't buy the higher level trims just to get certain features, like a better infotainment and built-in GPS. Why buy the higher level trim when I can get all of that (that I care about, anyway) in a base level trim with Apple Car Play.
I think you’re missing a key feature of CarPlay which is consistency of user experience across multiple brands of cars. If I have cars from three different manufacturers but all three have CarPlay, my contacts, favorites, playlists, and installed apps just come along and show up the same. This is why Tesla’s UX sucks for me. Even if manufacturers made a better experience, we would still have to load and sync all that stuff on every vehicle. No thanks.
You could be right. I assume Google's paying GM quite a packet. However, in my 2022 refresh Sierra, I barely use Car Play. Native Google maps > Apple Carplay Google Maps, Google assistant > Siri, Non Apple Music streaming service works just fine, etc etc. What am I missing that Apple does better?
I've been on the Waiting list for a new Blazer EV. I'm appalled by this decision. I'm going to hold off now. This is most likely a deal breaker for me.
until it rolls out and gets actual real user feedback. I'm going to try my best and hold off on getting all upset for now on this. Who knows as it might be ok? Time will tell like everything else. And from what I read with online chat platforms. Android Auto is a 3rd party app that wasn't designed by GM.
I finally got a car with Android auto 2 years ago. I will never buy another car without it unless the in car system is way better. My daughter has an iphone and her first car will definitely have carplay. I hope I can get her to never have to pick up her phone while driving.... fingers crossed.
Android Auto was a must when I bought my 2020 Silverado. Don't take it away and force me into a monthly subscription. I will NOT buy your EV if this is the case!
I'd imagine this was the doing of Google, they've probably paid big bucks for the exclusivity. But I'm a Google guy so I'm all good with this. Never owned an Apple product and never will.

I think that's a terrible idea. I know people that buy vehicles specifically for Apple CarPlay. Not necessarily brand but for Apple CarPlay itself
It’s definitely nice to have apple car play
With the HUGE increase in prices of the trucks, incorporating a mandatory 3 year subscription into the MSRP, and now this, General Motors is not making any friends!
Apple Car play is definitely something I want in a new vehicle.
I wouldn’t have considered my 2024 GMC Sierra without it.
Oh yeah this is a huge mistake because all I use is apple. By the way we got the new 24 HD in already last week 👍
Apple Carplay was a must for my decision to purchase a new vehicle.
Every other company will be doing this as well. This trend is already showing itself in some other brands. You'll be paying a subscription for featured that were once considered standard.
Did Anheuser Busch provide the market research for this decision?
CarPlay is an absolute must. The integration of both CarPlay and Android Auto was a massive positive step forward. Sad to say this is just history repeating itself with GM. They always seem to get things right just before they kill it off.

Do you know of any hack to force Car Play into the 2024 Equinox EV?
This is a potential show-stopper for me. And I really like the Blazer EV SS.
No CarPlay and more importantly switching to subscription based features is a hard no go for me.
CarPlay is absolutely a must.
Car play is a must! Probably buy a jeep or a Ford when they drop it.
CarPlay is a must!!!! If GM does go through with this I’ll never buy another GM product!!! This is just because they want to be greedy and want more money from people with their stupid subscription like Toyota and having to get a subscription to have remote start
I personally will pick another vehicle line if the system has a charge with it. The vehicle is already too expensive much
I was so excited for the new Traverse, but honestly no CarPlay is a huuuuge downgrade and will honestly will end up in me most likely skipping the car
At least you can still do the old skool way, which is bluetooth.
They hate Apple Car Play because they lose money when people don't buy the higher level trims just to get certain features, like a better infotainment and built-in GPS. Why buy the higher level trim when I can get all of that (that I care about, anyway) in a base level trim with Apple Car Play.
I don’t want a car without CarPlay. I also don’t want a GM electric vehicle either. (I’ve owned 12 GM cars in my lifetime)
No CarPlay means I would not consider the vehicle. It’s a must have for me
Anyone find a work around yet?
CarPlay is a must
I love Car play in my 22 AT4 and Harley Davidson. I’m not excited about the EV push by the Gov and all the automakers
Left my Tesla for a Sierra Elevation. Wireless CarPlay was one of the three main reasons.
I would NOT purchase a vehicle that did not have Android Auto. 100%. If I buy a used car I install a stereo with AA immediately.
If GM do that I’ll change to Ford. CarPlay it’s a must for me.
Apple Carplay/Android Auto...couldn't care less...but a monthly subscription? I will switch brands before I pay yet another damn subscription
