Oh, this was fun! Just watched the fun re-creation! I'm an American fan and first read about "Mission to the Unknown" in "The Making of Doctor Who" book about 1980 after they had been running the Tom Baker episodes for about a year or so. This documentary was an unexpected bonus! Thanks! It looks good! ----mike in Wichita, Kansas, USA

Still hard to believe that a Dalek I built at 10 with my Dad, dog-eared after a hundred charity events, would scrub up to contribute to such a great project. I had a blast operating it on set, flashing the lights in time with Nick Briggs' voice, and turning the crazy tight corners of Kembel. UCLAN have the perfect vehicle to remake lost loved TV, and with the concession of recast actors, I believe they should run with it. BBC please consider the staggering enthusiasm for this project

Excellent 'making of'. I love Josh Snares' work, and I was especially touched to hear mention of Dave Butler, who recorded the original soundtrack. Dave, who was a personal friend of mine, sadly died Xmas Eve 2017. He would have loved the remake, and his family will be particularly proud to know he's remembered in this way. Thanks Dave, for your dedication, and friendship.

As I said about this on another channel: Asomeone who was a child back in the 60's, what I really LOVE about the way this was done is how faithful it stayed to the production & filming methods of the time. The pace of the story was slower - as it needed to be with storylines having to run over 4 or 5 episodes with a 'cliff-hanger' at the end of each. It's what kept us on our toes and impatiently anticipating the next episode with excitement. You didn't try to 'modernise' it in any way, or try to speed up the telling in order that the whole story arc could be presented, feared and solved all in one 40 minute episode as it is in the episodes of today. Even the costumes of the aliens and the sets were put together in the 'cheap & shoddy' (meant with affection) way the technology and budgets of the time dictated. Watching this brought back real memories of my childhood and the nostalgia flowed through me like it hasn't done for far too long. You've made a fella who's getting old far too quickly really happy - really well done & thank you. I'm off to search now to see if you finished the story in another episode. lol

  • @Swenglish

Yes that was the one by Ian Levine he made a bunch of special features and interviews with the original cast and crew, yet the BBC refused to put it on DVD even though he was the first person who had came out with all the original audios of the missing episodes recorded and gave them to the BBC for free so the could put the audios on CD and Radio and use them for original DVD releases of the older episodes.
Even if they didn't use his animation there was no reason they couldn't have animated it ages ago

Actually, that was pretty much the idea! Now THIS is how whoever the hell owns Star Trek now should promote Star Trek Continues. And bloody well get some sense and start paying those people to make more! These kinds of retro productions are EXACTLY what so many of us Star Trek and Doctor Who fans want.
AND it's high time that these 1960s Daleks finally get their own spinoff, as Terry Nation clearly intended with Mission to the Unknown and what followed- a sort of Blake's Seven meets the 1960s TV Century 21 Dalek Chronicles comics I expect. Following the look of the latter would be a design master stroke. The Daleks in all their biological chemical nuclear genocidal racist horror have largely been wasted on Doctor Who, which is strongest when the horror element is strongest- a fact too often hampered by the show's family entertainment remit. Compare the Daleks of the original 1963 serial to their later incarnations and one sees that they have become caricatures.

They should do what the students at University of Central Lancashire did and remake them. It'd be a good project for students doing drama as well as TV/film production. If you think about it properly, the drama students will get experience in doing TV work and students working in TV/film production will get first-hand experience working in that sort of environment, also it'll look good on the CV and drama students could use it as a film reel when auditioning for work. Everybody wins, experience gained and everyone's got something to watch and enjoy. Who knows, they could go round all Universities that do drama courses and see if they'd be interested.

I hope BBC and the universities allow for more of these productions. (Idea: have these recreations be a course each term. You could have masters' projects be making various parts for this. I guarantee if you asked for fans to contribute a few quid/dollars/euros to a section of the university's endowment to make these, you would be inundated with contributions from fans like me.)

I think this will definitely mark the beginning of the doctor who community coming together and attempting more projects such as this weather it be creating animations of lost episodes themselves like some have already done . realizing live action audios and comics or full on acting out lost scripts in attempt to fill the gap and complete these lost episodes of this fandom we all love.Great work cant wait to see the result.

A really well-done recreation of the original. And a really great making-of featurette by Josh. Great work all around.

Really interesting and well done all. I admit to remembering the original episode vividly and yes absolutely I was behind the sofa for most of it. I had nightmares for weeks after about the Vargas - though I had forgotten that was their name!! 54 years!!!! Bloody hell!

They could do multiple verisions using this. Colour, widescreen (probably) and a mix where they try and mix the original audio in syncing it up with the actors (if at all possible). Really brilliant remake

    • @Yetaxa
      @Yetaxa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Colour and widescreen would be totally against the point of the project
adding in the original audio would be a nice touch though

i said it on the actual episode too but can these guys please just recreate ALL the missing episodes? this was INCREDIBLE and so well done. i bet david bradley would love to come on and reprise his role while helping students learn what goes into acting and production

Heck yes Dalek Cutaway. I remember that episode! I watched the lost episode's audio. All the lost ones have surviving audio recorded by fans at home, and they were set to any surviving images or promo clips by a production company called Loose Canon. And I was born in 1990. But I watched them all!
If anyone is interested in the history of the lost episodes, look up Ian Levine. We owe a lot to him. The history of this show is inspiring and fascinating.

1:34 9th October 1965 was also John Lennon's 25th birthday. In the week following The Beatles went back into the studio to begin recording 'Rubber Soul'.

Brilliant..Id love to see the finished product.Great to see Edward and Peter showing interest after 50 odd years as well.Hopefully, with the technology we have today the limitations could be endless with recreating some of the missing episodes of classic programmes stupidly wiped by the BBC.

Do meople still believe the myth that early episodes were deleted because of storage space? It was really to do with equity believing that if a company held such a back catalogue of work actors would be put out of jobs as there would just be constant repeats. Peter Cook offered to take the not only but also tapes off the BBC and replace them with new tape but they still destroyed most of them.
