    I am a super Alcaraz fan and hope Gill's right and Carlitos reclaims the number one ranking.
    But I hope this happens without an asterisk by Sinner not receiving any penalty or suspension. We all know he is 100% innocent of doping. He's an honest hard working guy who simply wouldn't risk stupid drug use, , even more so when he doesn't need to cheat to be totally awesome.
    If he were to be (unjustly in my opinion) punished in a way that basically gave away the number one spot to Carlos, it would take away shine from the achievement.
    I really wish the best for both Carlitos and Yannik.

      Everything depends on Carlos. Alcaraz has the highest potential at the tour. When he will be more constant, he will be nr1. When Alcaraz is mental and physical at 100% nobody could stop him, even sinner not. Best example ist the beijing final against sinner. When he could manage to play against everybody like he plays against sinner he will be der clean nr1 for a long time

      Love watching Carlos but he def has some areas he could improve in. I remember noticing Sinner at a similar time to when I first became aware of Carlos and thought, "wow - that skinny kid is REALLY good - shame he's skinny'. Couple of years later he looks just the same and he's number 1. Kudos. Would love to see Sinner in the flesh. They're both awesome.

      Fritz so high is a hilarious pick.
      Reminder he capitalized on home ground USO when majority of players were tired from the olympics.
      A tilt like player, mentally not focused.
      Players like Dimi making top 10 is a testament that the field just sucked.

    Everyone always underestimates Casper Ruud and he always still ends in the top 10 lmao. I think his second half of this year was greatly affected by his parasite at Roland Garros and then getting sick again in Canada, it seemed like he lost a lot of conditioning for awhile and then losing matches caused him to lose confidence and it became a snowball effect. But he ended pretty well at the ATP Finals and I think he’ll be back on track next year. He actually started 2024 stronger than any year of his career probably and was doing well on hardcourt even.

    • @GillGross

      I mean yeah he ended 2023 at #11 but he’s ended top 10 three of the past four years and maybe not you personally but most people were actually saying at the time that 2022 was a fluke and he’d tumble down the rankings in 2023. Which has yet to happen. Just feels like he never gets any respect from anyone and is always overlooked and even when he does get good results people asterisk it somehow 🤷‍♂️

    • @Eboe89
      @Eboe89 5 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@JayneBangert Felix is quite aggressive his issue is more with shot selection, wild errors and wild swings in his matches where he seems to suddenly crumble (he did great coming back yesterday tho).
      Ruud would do well to be more aggressive but I mean objectively he’s still had a great career already compared to 99% of players who turn pro. 12 titles, 3 slam finals, 2 masters finals, three times thru to the ATP Finals semifinals, over $22m in prize money and he’s 26 so he has at least 5 more good years probably. I would like to see him have more belief in himself and get a bit cocky out there tho, it might take him to the next level where he can truly win masters and slam titles.

      Agree !! He finish last year out of the top 10, with an ordinary year, apart for RG final (but he was having so much point to defend... and not a lot of people knows that he struggle with injuries for few parts of the year, shoulder, abdominal, but he was still playing, and never give the injury as an excuse). He start 2024 on hard court like fire... Then get really ill in early summer, then again in the North-American swing.... then manage to end the year at 6 ! Imagine if the last 6 months of the year was not bad. He's always is so underappreciated. Maybe if people had more faith in him he would have more faith in himself ! Man Medvedev at 9 hurts.
    Don't get me wrong, your reasoning is super solid and his shoulder is definitely a long term issue that isn't going away. It's something that everyone has noticed by now. Trying his best to be offensive but not having it work at all when it's super clear he KNOWS what to do tactically really sucks to watch as well.
    To see someone's body potentially fail them when they still have the mental drive and Tennis IQ to win Slams just feels tragic, like you're locked in a prison. Obviously he should have been better in those Slam Finals and taken more chances but... slim margins and it is what it is I suppose.

      You have to factor in a lot of things, that he had a monster 2023, made me think he would fall off a bit like he historically has and he did. This time if not for age I'd think he will replicate an average year, but with age maybe in between or worse.
      Also that he put it all out to win the gold, this time he will be much more fresh for the hardcourt season and USO.

    Can you tell your friend Cam Williams that the year end rankings for 2025 ARE NOT AFFECTED by 2024 results. It's so frustrating that someone who doesn't even understand the rankings has a channel with more popularity than yours.

      Wow that’s crazy Cam Williams is a tennis analyst and still thinks that. I almost feel like the media has to stop placing so much emphasis on “defending points” since the average fan does not have the mathematical literacy to understand what it means, and some fans won’t even understand it after you explain it to them like they’re a child.
      I remember Djokovic tanked against Sonego at Vienna 250 in 2021 and diehard Djokovic fans were saying “oh this is a smart move by Novak, he’s improving his chances at #1 next year by not needing to defend these points” 😂 I really tried explaining to them that it’s not beneficial to tank the match from a points perspective ever, but they wouldn’t listen.

      The actual ranking in August 10 2025 will tell you who had the best year from August 10 2024 to August 10 2025.
      The race in August 10 2025 tells you who had the best 2025 calendar year up to that point ( from Jan 1 to August 10 ) . Tennis is separated in calendar years and the race is very useful. If during June I want to see who had the most points so far in 2025 , then I will just look at the race without having to calculate all the points for all the players. The race is also very useful to the players so that they know their progress (point-wise) at any moment of the year.

    Sinner, besides being very strong technically, has something that no one else has: an unreal mental strength. This year he did something unique by calculating how many months he had to train and play, keeping in mind the contamination issue: 99.999% of the players would have collapsed. For these reasons he will confirm himself as number 1

    Post-watch edit:
    Gill has convinced me I'm wrong on de Minaur and Rublev, but I'm still feeling good about Ruud (seeing room for improvement rather than negatives - I think without the illness at RG his 2nd half results would have been better this year).
    Like Gill I'm also down on Medvedev but I don't feel quite as pessimistic (yet) - the way I see it, this was a terrible year with clear decline and he still ended up 5th in the world; for my list, my only hesitation was whether to choose likely quality of results (Djokovic) over quantity of results (Medvedev) but went with the latter.
    I was going to predict Draper higher but his off-season hip injury doesn't fill me with confidence, and I had no idea what to do with Rune but thought 8 was a reasonable compromise between his great talent and his issues knowing how to use it. Having said that, on reflection if I had to take someone off to fit de Minaur, Rune would be that player.

    Seeing how many places in the top 10 at the end of 2024 Gil guessed right and seeing that he predicted Alcaraz higher than Sinner, makes me feel more confident that Sinner will repeat his victory in the ranking at the end of 2025.
    However, I also predict an improvement of Carlitos in several aspects of his game, especially in concentration and continuity both during matches and during the season, his problem is that I predict a further improvement of Jannik too, maybe at the end of the year there will be less than the almost 5000 ATP points of this year but there will be.
    Obviously many fanboys of other players hope for a long ban of Sinner, long live sportsmanship...

    You're wrong about Djokovic. He has stated that he's going full throttle again in 2025. He has already scheduled to play Doha 500 in February. Brisbane 250 is about to start in a few days, he will be no.1 seed there. The schedule will resemble 2023 most likely, perhaps with even more tournaments played. Might even play Davis Cup qualies right after AO. I believe he has realized that he cannot afford to keep having really high peaks and really low valleys anymore during the course of the season, hence he will play more in order to have a more consistent year in an effort to more easily produce and unlock his best level at slams.

    Absolute excellent, fact-based, and thoughtful analysis. About Casper Ruud. I fully appreciate your reluctance to putting him at 11 and your reason for doing so. Still, I have to disagree. He was 6 in 2024 and I expect him to finish there again + or - 2 spots. The main reason is that he continues to improve each year. His serve, dropshot, aggressiveness on the backhand, and net game have all improved this year. I believe one of the reasons Casper's level drops is because he is aiming for a higher level and to reach that level and make it stable, he needs to let loose and take more risks.

And get sick again after the Olympics... play 1 match that he win in Montréal, than withdraw, barely play in Cinci he was not well during the match. And though match loss during the year start to turn down his confidence ! I really happy for him that he close the year with a semi-final in the Nitto ATP Finals. Gill, your positive bias towards Carlos compared to Sinner is always pretty clear and I don't necessarely blame you for that, but if you say that you have to consider the possibility of a suspension for Sinner as one of the two reasons for putting him n2, then why don't put him directly outside top ten since Wada asked for a minimum ban of a year. Either you consider the suspension or you don't, but since it's something totally umpredictable and outside the sport itself, I wouldn't take it into consideration when making a top ten prediction. And in normal circumstances it is surely possible for Alcaraz to starting be more reliable than Sinner for a long period of time, but it's still pretty unlikely

As for De Minaur, I think the main reason he got to top 10 is that many players with top 10 potential under performed in 2024 (Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Tiafoe, Auger-Aliassime, Ben Shelton and Berretini that was coming back from injury).

    I'm agree with a lot of stuff you said, but some of your comments about Casper are a bit odd😅! 1. he's not a player that didn't play well because the condition are not perfect... he never complain about anything (oh yes that 1 time in Miami where he complained about sanitary... but he was not the only one, and he was right). 2. He's not experiencing hard court regression😅(maybe in 2023, but he was "hiding" injuries, shoulder, abdominal)... 2024 he was really good on hard court except in october ! 3. He's better than 2 months a year. 2024 he was rocketing the year until the end of Roland-Garros, he was the player with the most wins of the season (39). Then he got really sick for weeks... and again during North-American swing. With all that he lose so much confidence... And on that point I'm agree with you, the confidence is an issue for him, he will have to try to deal with it in a better way in the future ! I hope he does great in 2025 and stay injury/ill free this time🤞! United Cup last week, he was sharp, really attacking the opponent, he win his 2 matches (Hurkacz, Machac), dealing with some fitness where I don't think he was 100%, but he said that he will work on the fitness for his last part of the pre-season in Melbourne before AO. For the rest of the Top 10... I don't think it's gonna move a lot in 2025 !

I strongly believe that if not banned, Sinner will increase the gap between himself and the rest of the field (he is alone on tier one). If he's banned, the risk is he'll be out for a long time probably one year and he'll be out of the top 10 probably. If Sinner is out, Alcaraz will suffer greatly because he seems like a player that needs motivations from the outside and with both Sinner and Djokovic not there, I see Zverev, Fritz and Medvedev taking advantage.

    My thoughts
    The decision was based on their best & healthy
    At their best
    They are the perfect top tenner
    Alcaraz was one step better than Sinner
    Medvedev's level of play was the top four potential
    but the shoulder injury might cause him more
    Djokovic after winning the golden slam
    The passionate to compete
    won't be the same
    Expecting the retirement

    Okay - but if you considered injury proneness/body how could you end up with Draper in the top ten?
    And why do points to defend not matter and are erased, what do you even mean? I really dont get it, because I constantly hear "defending points".

    I think Novak will finish higher than that. I would probably put him 4th. I agree there was some decline last year, that there will be continued decline in motivation, and he will continue to play a lighter schedule (hence 4th and not higher). But my theory is last year the whole season was centered on the singular goal of winning the Olympics and that this year the Slams will be back to being his primary focus. He showed himself capable of still winning the big matches at the Olympics and I think he'll probably pick up another Slam this year. That'll be enough to get him to 4th but still trailing Sinner and Alcaraz and an overall more consistent Zverev.

    Rublev is done. Medvedev is done (might still cling to top 10 though), Dimitrov is done, De Minaur done
    Players that I think will take a dip: Sinner, Fritz (big one)
    I think there some some new blood that will rise this year, I just don't know which once exactly.
    I also believe at least 1 slam will be one by someone outside of Novak/Sinner/Alcaraz

  • @SJ-di5zu

    I really do think this is the year Alcaraz gets better and more consistent on fast hard. Almost every hard court tournament outside IW is fast now so he needs to adapt. He’s already taking steps to do so by skipping the South American clay season in favor of playing Doha and Rotterdam, which I think is the right move. We also have to keep in mind that if he plays a full clay season this year, it’s likely he wins at least one Masters title there, possibly 2 especially if Sinner’s suspension falls during clay, which I have a feeling it will.
    Alcaraz has had a mental slump every year at this point so I suppose we have to factor it in, but I think he’s due for a big win streak or dominant stretch next season. Something like winning Indian Wells, Monte Carlo, Madrid, RG, Wimbledon. Then like a US Open SF/F, consistent QFs/SFs to end the season, and he’s #1.
    But again, the fast hard court distribution heavily skews towards Sinner so it will take something truly special for Alcaraz to get #1.

      It doesn't 'skew' towards anyone. Fast hardcourts are dead by 2002.

      João Fonseca maybe in 2026 or 2027, physically he is not yet ready to go deep on slams, without that it is impossible to be in the top 10.

    Thanks Gill, really enjoyed your predictions and analysis. As a Sinner fan, I just want this CAS decision done so we know the best or the worst and can focus back on the tennis. My feeling is that whatever happens, Sinner will be ok over the medium to long term- amazing mentality.

    Gill, please, don't confuse listeners. Novak 3 times had finished back-to-back as the world no 1: 2011-12, 2014-15 (4 times in 5 seasons in much tougher era than 2004-2007) and 2020-21. Don't say it never happened since mid 2000's because it's easy to check even by casual fans. Obviously Roger never done it in a strong era, Rafa never done it at all. Sinner can do it, we'll see.

      @@GillGross Ok, thanks for clearing it. It really might sound like you'r talking about back-to-back no 1. seasons when you started: "Why do I have him at no 2? (...) the rule is: unless he's mid 2000's Roger Federer..." And I agree, obviously, that Novak's 2012, 2014 and 2020 weren't that dominant as 2011,2015 and 2021. Still finished at no 1 pretty convincingly.

      Djokovic has a lower Anking this time around which will make his runs way harder and his age at some point will catch up to him. I don't expect him to finish his career as a top 10 player and injury free.
      As for Medvedev, he is definitely regressing, there's no denying that. And he hasn't dramatically improved his game, either. Not looking good for both, but hey, perhaps they turn it around.

    Think Gill is overly confident on Draper, but again he did the same with Carlitos.
    Personally wouldn’t drop Casper outside of top 10, think he’s way too consistent especially on clay to be ranked lower than likes of de minaur

  • @Soundwave-Renaissance
    @Soundwave-Renaissance 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The decline happens at 29, but sometimes 30. Think Agassi who had a great year the year he turned 29. So Medvedev could have one more solid to great year and you could still be correct in your prediction. Foot speed is usually the first thing to go barring nagging injuries taking a toll.

    Again downgrading Sinner due to Wada appeal is fair but Zeverv below Alcaraz doesn't fit Logically, Zeverev would beat Carlitos on majority of tour , he is much more fitter and consistent than Alcaraz , only plus for carlitos is his GS performances but i would say he will decline this year , i feel he has reached his plateau ( wild take ) ...my prediction is Sinner 1 , Zeverv 2 and Alcaraz 3

  • @jackloughridge7617
    @jackloughridge7617 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    Great vid as always gill. I think you might be underestimating the rankings gap between alcaraz and sinner as alcaraz would need to almost double his points to finish year end no.1 this year. Also does medvedev fall into the category of everything went wrong and he still finished 5th? Unless we are predicting a physical decline, I can’t see him finishing much lower than he did this year

    • @TheNeoGriot
      @TheNeoGriot 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Gill explained at the beginning of the video that the points that determine the Year End #1 (ATP Race) resets each season. Only the points they earn over the course of 2025 season count towards that, so Alcaraz won’t need to make up any points against Sinner because they are both starting at zero. He just has to win more points than him during the season. The 52-week ranking points, the ones that players can lose after 52-weeks and the points they can “defend”, only really matter with regards to tournament seeding but don’t affect the official year-end ranking.

    • @jackloughridge7617
      @jackloughridge7617 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      I understand that. Im saying that Alcaraz would have to improve a lot from this year and sinner decline a lot to make up the difference seen this year. Not saying that he’s defending points or anything because its a 1 year system.

    • @TheNeoGriot
      @TheNeoGriot 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @jackloughridge7617 Ok. But Gill is correct in saying that there's very little difference skill and talent-wise between Alcaraz and Sinner. The only difference in their ranking points (this one season) is Sinner's better consistency over the entire season. Gill stated he believes Sinner will be less consistent because it's almost impossible to replicate a season like he had, and that Alcaraz will have potentially his most consistent season ever. I think this could be enough to make the difference. I don't think it's a matter of one declining a lot and one improving substantially. But, of course, we're all here to express our personal opinions.

    • @SJ-di5zu
      @SJ-di5zu 10 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Yeah if Sinner plays anywhere near this well again, Alcaraz ain’t catching him. There’s too many fast hard courts nowadays so Carlos will be at a bit of a disadvantage regardless despite being probably better on slow hard, clay, and grass. But if he does get to play a full clay season and Sinner gets suspended and is less consistent? That gap will close fast. Also Zverev (or even Djokovic) could feasibly steal some of Sinner’s fast hard court titles, like say winning the US Open and Turin, which would split the points up.
      The thing about Medvedev is that the downward trajectory has lasted over a year now, since US Open 2023 really. I do think a bounce back year is entirely possible if he fixes the serve, because his athleticism seems to be fine, but Gill brings up valid points. Maybe Medvedev’s shoulder is truly gone and he can’t serve at his previous level, or anywhere near it for that matter. His serve was genuinely bad this year, which is a huge fall from being one of the best in the world. And if his athleticism does start to decline, he’s done for. He doesn’t have the offensive capabilities to adapt.
